When he first came on to the scene, i thought he was kind of a boring player, bit like Cleverley really. He has evolved a lot from then, now he drives with the ball, uses dummy tricks, and passes between the lines.

His performance today was fine, but he definitely had some moments of taking too long to make the pass etc. Not something i would beat him over the head with.

Must have watched a different match. I thought he did fine. Used his strength on the ball well to get out of pressure.
That's what I thought. He wasn't very good but he was good enough. Dribbling past players, using his strength and height to win duels.

Can improve a lot, especially when it comes to how he moves out of possession. Also thought he was very lazy for their first goal. Just have lot of space for Firmino.

For somene deployed deep in midfield to put more steel he´s too careless and way out of position. The first goal, what was he thinking staying there, not pressuring Salah at all. Fred would have been much tighter to him. But you can see him failing to fill the gaps and press at the right tme most often than not which is shame to see.

For the game overal though, he was okayish, a lot of bad passes and some good moments/challenges. Maybe it´s a shame he didn´t play in midfield much earlier in his career since you can see his obvious weaknesses now, in terms of passing and positioning but he can do a job there for us. Just hope we don´t messa around and really replace Matic with someone better because fred needs a better partner to tight games like this or an alternative when he´s out or need rest.

The midfield on the paper looks combative but McT can make us look so open at times it pains.

His decision making is his biggest limitation at the moment. Yesterday he was opting to dribble in very weird positions, like out of our box against 2 Liverpool players, trying pointless Hollywood balls that rarely found their mark and holding onto the ball for 4/5 touches more than he needed to. He's not a top player but he's certainly better than he's showing. Solskjaer could do with giving him a few games rest, seems to have benefited most of the others in the squad.

He got bullied off the ball a few times against Liverpool, and another one of those players who thinks he has more time than he actually has with the ball: "There are other players on the pitch, you know"..

Thought he played pretty well yesterday given they had a player advantage in midfield (VDB was literally a SS and doesn't help out the midfield nearly as much as Bruno).

Just checked the stats from whoscored and he either had parity or better stats than Pogba across all aspects of the game. (Felt after the game they had pretty similar performances TBH, though I was shocked Pogba was given MOTM.)

I thought he did well today.
I thought he did well too. Glided through all their pressing with a bit of silk.

My faith in humanity is restored. He was pretty good and I can't understand the criticism.

Feels like we're heading down the Rashford/Martial/Ole road again with camps of lovers and haters, which is a shame.
He did a lot of good things yesterday and showed some very good technical skills, but a couple of times, he showed he needed to work on his game, especially his decision and risk taking.
But the same could be said about others yesterday and pretty much in every match. At least McT is young and has time to learn.
The team played well. The team won. Everyone worked hard. Scott played his part fully and once again, could not be questioned for effort or attitude, which is a key trait of his in every game. Not all his colleagues can always claim that, in fairness.

There is a large portion of fans who have a McTominay agenda. However well he plays, that 1/2 mis placed pass will always be the topic of conversation.

I like the fact that he covered around the midfield so well, we forget we played a top team today.

Did well against a very good team.

He's a solid player, he's one of our own. I hope he plays a part for the rest of his career.

Lots of room for improvement, but a good solid player who's very much needed for certain games.

He quite objectively didn’t play well, though. You can’t watch that first half and tell me he was anything other than abysmal. He lost the ball several times, got caught in possession and was poor for the goal. Nobody is making any of that up.

He improved in the second half and managed to break the midfield line a couple of times but that midfield performance isn’t good enough if we are to seriously compete at the top level. Surely you can see that?

If I can't get to rewatch the game, I'm hoping to see a Youtube of his touches yesterday at some point. Not always easy to be objective in the heat of a live match, but I remember multiple occasions that he passed through the lines, or used his strength and quick touches to wriggle out of a difficult situations against a team that know how to press very well. I think he's improving all the time, and you are right in that his bad moments are highlighted too much by fans who've decided they just don't rate him.

I understand some peoples frustration because he isn't a £60m signing, he hasn't got the technical ability of Xavi but what he offers is very good workrate, passion, leadership. Like you said, he is improving, players like him are so crucial in games because they allow the likes of Bruno, Pogba to play their game.

I just dont understand when people say, Donny is better why is he not starting. I guarantee those people, if we play Donny, Pogba, Bruno midfield, we will lost alot of games.

No I don't see that. As I said in another post, its not always accurate to stand by any summary made during a match so I'd like to watch it again before I'm comfortably firm on my opinion, but I recall him doing a lot of good things for the team yesterday. His stats on WhoScored sort of back-up where I'm at. They ranked him higher than any other midfielder on the pitch.

I'm with you on this. It's tiresome and disingenuous when people focus on one or two specific moments to summarise a player's game as either mind-blowingly good or abysmal. I cannot remember any match where a player did absolutely nothing right or wrong. It's the totality that counts.
I get that a moment of magic can mean a winning goal and giving the ball away can mean a defeat, but the posting on here would be so much more balanced if folk looked at the full picture in a reasonable manner.
Too much black or white, when in my experience pretty much everything is a shade of grey.

He improved as the game went on, definitely struggled at first. I don't think he's a defensive mid, he doesn't have the positioning or technique to hold. Hes a box to box mid that can break up play and get around everywhere, but you need the positioning next to him and an actual pivot who will receive the ball.

I can only really recall a handful of what I would class as 'mistakes' from our players yesterday. One was Mason not cutting back to Donny when he went through early, but that's always easy from our lofty camera view. If he didn't feel comfortable making the pass then he was right to shoot. Once when Pogba was robbed in our half and that opened up a very threatening situation.

By far the worst one was Cavani's very low percentage one-touch pass attempt across the pitch that directly led to their second goal. I've not seen that mentioned much on here if at all, and that's down to perception in my view. Cavani is a current favourite whereas Scott is someone that many people view as not up to it so they leap on anything he does. I can't really recall anything terrible that he did yesterday but quite a lot of times where I thought 'that was strong midfield play'

Not a great performance from McScott yesterday, but then again he really isn’t a holding midfielder. He’s a marauding B2B but against Liverpool we couldn’t unleash him.

He looked more comfortable when Fred came on to complete the McFred partnership.

Solid squad player, no doubt about it.

Disappointed he had to come off. I've criticised him a fair bit over the last month but his performance while he was on today was comfortably the best he'd played since the Leeds match. Hopefully this illness (injury?) doesn't knock him too much.
Really? Thought he looked besides himself from the first minute, understandably so.

He started off very well. He’s one of those players where you can tell if he’ll have a good game after the first few minutes. And today was going to be a good performance. Sucks he went off. What was wrong with him? The shits? Couldn’t he have done a Dier?

Actually was disappointed to see him go, I am by far a fan of his but he seemed to be for one very up for it and looked strong in there alongside Fred. Ole didn't want to waste a substitution and so opted for Marital which made us very open. I think in this case we should make a call and instruct Bruno to drop a bit deeper otherwise we lose control of midfield or just play the team closer together in general. We are too stretched, waiting for a counter way too often.

Actually got to the point this season when I'd prefer McFred as our starting CMs with Pogba in a free role in a way we started the game. I think if we continued we would get more chances while looking a bit more solid. Matic is a grandpa on last legsswitching of in defense way too often and taking oo many touches, VdB is too soft and simple to play there.

Easy to say with hindsight but we needed his grit in midfield yesterday. Needed him for the whole 90 mins and the injury certainly had a bearing on the result. Upset the system replacing him with Martial causing Pogba to play deeper.

The positive is that he was not really injured but having a stomach cramp as confirmed earlier by some of us in this thread. So, he will be back in action right away.
