For me he can replace Pogba. His passing maybe not as good or long ranged but he can score goals from midfield whilst being an influence defensively when playing midfield.

I wouldnt be surprised if his passing will improve further the more he enters his prime.

Are Deep lying playmakers essential in today's sport when nearly all CB'S are ball playing defenders that can play a ball from deep?

Maybe we just get a ball winning CDM that can let box to box players like Fred or Mctomminay play freely whilst also holding a creative CAM.
The beauty of this McFred dual pivot is that both are B2B. They push forward or move back together, or one go forward with the other as cover, or one go side with the other moving to center. There is an invisible string linking them together. They work like an engine with two pistons.

Very good today, when he is allowed to play higher up the pitch he is quite capable of affecting games, good ball carrier and evidently a good striker of the ball. Reminds me a lot of Goretzka when he truly plays box-to-box.

Hopefully we'll soon step away from the idea of him being a holding midfielder..This is the 'McFred' that I'd be happy to see more often.
It's not because of position of the pitch, I think he looks better when the play is ahead of him rather than around him. He looks good playing in defensive line for the same reason.

2 long range goals now, seem to have work on his shooting skill this season, straight like an arrow.

Last season and before that he scored 7 goals, I think around 5 of them are from outside the box.

Vs Club Brugge - Outside the box
Vs Arsenal - Outside the box
Vs ManCity - Outside the box
Vs Wolves - Outside the box
Vs Hyddersfield - Outside the box

I don't think we're disagreeing, I'm not saying he should be playing with his back to goal but arguably his best attribute is his ability to carry the ball, and he needs to have 'license' to do that and really break from midfield. Ultimately it's the same starting position that he should be playing in the pivot but he has to aim to play it in a way closer to how he did today.

If that's the case, he should actually be playing deeper, no? Anyway, for me it's hard to say what is his best attribute really, he seems all round decent midfielder who I really like.

I think that McTominay, like a number of the team, are slowly growing into a decent side. Confidence in yourself and confidence in others can transform a team into a very good one.
On his day he certainly looks like a player, but by the same token on another day he looks poor. This I think is when he is unsure of how he should approach said game, especially if he is being asked to hold a more defensive position, his instinct is to carry the ball forward, but to hold he will have to play the ball from a deeper position. To me he should set his stall out and play his natural game more often.
I think Ole's approach is sometimes a bit negative, especially against the (so called) top six, which shows in our results against them, which hinders McTominay in my view.
This lad will be at OT for the rest of his career I'm sure, and whether in the team or on the bench will always give his all.

Fans need to put respect on McTominay. Its frustrating to see every time he is picked fans moaning.

Last season we moaned because we played 2 DM and 2 defensive full backs. We have changed that now as our full backs are flying up. We need McFred in the middle, the team has alot more energy about them.

Good to see him get another goal and starting to fizz the passes into the forwards.

B2B is his role, definately. A goal threat from outside the box with a good strike. Overall a gritty player, covers a lot of ground, strong in the tackle, heart on his sleave, carries the ball well........
Can he follow in the footsteps of the man from Cork? Who knows? Sky's the limit!

I think this guy could absolutely be a world beater in the next few years if he keeps it up.

Strong, aggressive, good in the tackle, and has the ability to bring the ball out with those driving runs. He’s got a good range of passing IMO, this is something I think has been looking better and better recently, although he can still be a bit sloppy on occasion. He’s also a goal threat.

He’s got all the tools to be a near complete midfielder, and seems to have the dedication and mental attributes to get there. I’m excited but time will tell

If only some of our fans allow young players to develop without having agendas.

We have seen in games where he has not played we struggle in midfield due to energy levels.

Also, people pick the 3 passes he doesnt complete saying he cannot pass, when Pogba plays a silly pass, nothing is said. I saw him try line breaking passes, switching the play, breaking up play, and to add to that he is a leader.

I actually think he’s a very good passer. He’s been a bit complacent at times which is to be expected considering how young he still is, but otherwise it’s very good and getting better. His confidence is growing which you can see, he’s a lot calmer on the ball and some of his cross field balls are the best in the squad IMO.

Well you can see that he has a bit about him, just look at the technique when he strikes the ball. I really hope he develops into a good box to box for us.

From what I see he's a good enough passer when he has space. He doesnt have the technical ability when the midfield is packed or with a low block. When he needs to play quick passing, when the space opens up only for a split second. In these games he starts playing overly simply. Playing back to the defenders or an easy ball. Or he's too slow to release the ball and the opposition re-shape. It might be age or confidence in his passing but he is still miles off technically against top opposition.

Great game, just need to him to start timing his runs into the box and getting on the end of crosses now too. With his height he should be a threat in the air.

I’d agree that’s he’s not been particularly well suited to tight spaces so far. It remains to be seen whether this is down to him or simply our team/midfield not being great in these scenarios full stop.

I don’t see him as ever being that player, but I don’t think he needs to be.

This guy should be starting every game. He's probably the most well rounded midfielder we have. Add to that he has the kind of character we need. He's one of the unofficial captains.

He's already scored as many as he did last season. As a B2B midfielder, I reckon he would get around 10+ per season.

He was scoring those last season too.
I know he has been scoring goals consistently but let me elaborate my thought. I was observing those 1st time outside the box shot that he scored in last 2 memory - seem to be better in control and with some ease as well. Matic scored a screamer during Mourinho era that was high corner, McTom seemed to be able to control the shot low and straight. That must have some technique in it and possible long hour of practice.

I think a zippy possession midfielder like Modric is the ideal partner for Mctominay or Fred. They'd help against the press and the low block.

Scotty does know how to play football sometimes. It´s his days off when you think he shouldn´t step on the football pitch. If he keeps things simple and doesnt think about it too much, he´s at his best. He´s immensely strong and can drive forward. He can hit the ball as well, great attitude. I would hope with his height he would get into box more but perhaps it might take abit of time when he gets that freedom and recently he scored from a corner. Shame he´s very average passer. Don´t get me wrong I liked his performance against Soton but they played in 10 and later in 9 men, really no pressure at all to pass around, although showed good bit of vision there. Definitely a b2b due to his at times poor positioning, so next to a DM or another defensive player like Fred he´s at his best.

Really we should go with them two to start most games now untill we decide to bring someone better on the ball and solid defensively too to alternate with Fred and McT. BTW I wouldn´t mind to play Pogba in a free role from the left at times too to solidify midfield in the build up and add more flair or alternate with Bruno, maybe even as a false 9. I think we should jsut find a way to play our most commited and best players no matter the formation. Good players will find spot for themselves.

Having a superb season. Another great game.
Looks great when he gets to surge forward. Interested to see what his ceiling is, his attacking performances have certainly made me re-think his potential.

He’s so much better than Fred or Matic.

Love McTominay. He’s what a United player should be.

He's brilliant. Played a really great match. Too many important defensive interceptions and the goal was just the icing on the cake. He deserved to score.

Along with Cavani , Mctom was the most consistent performer in both halves.

Finally scored a header in the PL. His goals relative to xG is incredible, yet for headers it is absolutely terrible, even including today's goal. Needs to score more headers in the PL. Got a couple in Cup games this season.

Understat didn't even give him the goal against Brighton yet his 9 goals by their count (10 by everyone else), compares to 4.51 expected goals. Of which headers are 1.95.

15 headers 1 goal in the PL.
