Pope and Allison.
Martinez is very good, but should maintain his current level for ar least one more season.
Sanchez and Meslier look very promising.

Despite today Allison is still the best.

Think I'd have Kasper as no.2

Probably Ederson at 3.

Kasper Schmeichel is the most underrated keeper in the league. I'd be very glad to have him between the sticks for at least one season. He grew up at the club, he's a fan, he put in a shift despite being half the size of his dad.

It's clearly Alisson IMO. He made high profile errors today but since he's been in the PL, he's been the best keeper.

He's a great shot stopper but is also dominant with crosses and usually superb at playing out from the back. No keeper in the league is as complete as him.
Could you compile a list of great shots he's stopped? He makes saves you expect to save, I can't remember him making a single world class save

@Spaghetti Well, if De Gea is considered one of the best in the league, and if Pickford's stats stand above De Gea's in Sweeping Interventions and Crosses Taken, then Pickford is definitely worth discussing, ain't it?

For what it's worth, I think we need a goalkeeper like Nick Pope, someone who is either at the top or somewhere near the top in all three sections, 'cos our defense isn't one that seems world class at the moment.

Up top, we have Cavani, Bruno, Pogba, Rashford almost world class.

Whereas, in defense, only Shaw can hold his head high with his performances ever since the restart of last season after the pandemic related lockdown.

So, I would say Nick Pope is the best.

Not into locations = will not dwell
1. Alisson (Sheer class, especially at protecting the back 4)
2. Lloris (Weak command but, again, a good protector and an especially good stopper)
3. Martinez (All-round game is excellent, reminds me of Keylor Navas)

Pope is close but I'll admit some bias not including him. I still remember the season Heaton played a blinder, he had some unreal stats. It's a similar Areola and Meslier and McCarthy - I get the feeling certain GK stats simply look better when the team is set up to have shots peppered at them all day (as long as, you know, it's not Kepa).

I suspect it also partly explains why they seem good at collecting crosses - basically those teams need goalkeepers who are good at it so recruit for that purpose. That's my theory anyway.

Alisson and Martinez have now made as much silly errors as DDG this season no?

No idea. De Gea has been horrible for 2-3 years now, has no command over his area and is an absolute fanny so I'm not considering him at all in this discussion. Alisson has been the most consistent over the last couple of years and Martinez the most eye catching over the last 12 months. I've barely seen him make a mistake other than the couple of soft efforts of Lingards that squirmed past him

He’s not. That’s the reason for the discussion. Stats are also a bit skewed, as the goals yesterday won’t go down as “errors” by the ‘keepers, even though most of the 6 goals could have been easily stopped.

All goalies make mistakes but if de Gea had played like Allison today, you can imagine the reaction here. I think Lloris is in the mix.
The difference between them is Allison made some unexpected errors today. De Gea errors are not unexpected (we all know his weak points).

I’d be inclined to give Dean a shot at number 1 next season to prove he’s up to it. If he’s not, go for Pope who will have 2 years left on his contract next summer. DDG will have a year left.

A couple of years ago I would have said he was the best all-round keeper in the league, not necessarily amazing at anything but he was good at everything. In that sense he was probably closer to VDS than his old man. I feel he's fallen off a bit the last 18 months though, although maybe I've just caught him on a few bad days where he's let in goals I would have expected him to save.

Can’t think of any standouts. They all make the same number of mistakes in a season that schmeichel made in a career. Standards have dropped with the change of football styles.

The one thing De Gea had going for him is shot stopping and that was 3 years ago. Without it he's one of the worst in the PL.
Yeah, De Gea has been the second worst this season in that department for the whole league. Right now you can argue he is in the bottom 3/5 GKs, which is totally embarrassing.

Is he also the highest paid player in the entire Premier League? £375kpw four-year deal looks like one of the worst contract extensions in history.

Without being biassed it has to be Alisson. Even if he's underperforming currently he is easily above all the other keepers.

Worst part is we gave him the deal one year after he was already fecking up. Its not like it was a surprise he's making this errors, many here called it a bad decision and I think we were right. At the moment we have the best paid keeper in the league who is really error prone and with really marked weaknesses. If not because of the credit he still has because of his wonderful past seasons he would had been kicked out of the team already.

Didn’t he make 2-3 excellent saves against Utd just a few weeks ago?

Goalkeepers are a very difficult one to judge. I reckon De Gea would perform excellently for a team nearer the lower half of the league. He stays deep, doesn’t like to come out and seems to perform better when he’s kept busy.

One of the key under appreciated qualities that top goalies have is the ability to make a key save when they play for a dominant team. It may not be 10 saves a game but it’s one big save to keep it 0-0 or 1-0. De Gea seems particularly poor at those kind of moments. So many times this season we’ve conceded first and it was an ok chance for the other team. Maybe not a nailed on goal and not a huge mistake either. You need your goalie to bail out your defence a few times each season and it’s not really happened this year.

I don’t think there’s any keeper in the league at the moment with the same kind of ‘wow how did he get to that’ saves that DeGea was pulling off a few years ago.

Highest paid GK in the world as well. Shows how desperate and inadequate at their jobs are the people responsible for negotiations.

They where saves you'd expect any decent keeper to make... Has the bar lowered that much, that those type of saves are what constitutes as excellent saves?

Big Pete would have a field day this day and age if those saves that Allison made are classed as excellent saves.
