Will certainly be interesting to see if Mctominay can continue to improve. I wouldn't be surprised if he cements himself as a big player for us. He would definitely benefit from playing with a deep lying playmaker type though, therefore allowing him to carry on driving into the box.
Agree with this, actually. If McTominay is to truly flourish then he needs to play with a younger version of Matic to do so. Somebody who is defensively sound but can also control the tempo of the match.

Blindingly obvious he was originally a striker, just by his shooting technique, his strong running with the ball and also his biggest weakness, which has been reacting to danger.

Maturing so well, and the defensive side will improve I'm certain of that.
I think he was originally a midfielder. But he had a spurt of growth which coincided with United having no fit strikers. So coaches moved him to striker for a couple of seasons at U-23.

No doubt someone will correct me but I’m sure he was actually a winger.

His top level is very high. Not many midfielders with his mix of size, speed, agility and stamina. Technically he needs to be more consistent, when confident he plays quick and efficient passes and picks his moments to drive forward with the ball, looks a terrific player when it all clicks. He does have too many games , even spells in games where he gets flustered in his passing or takes a couple of poor touches, but that top level is attractive.
It’s a weird one because I’m inclined to agree with you. He has all the assets there to be a top class midfielder, and at times he does show signs of doing so. It’s just often I’m not convinced he’ll ever get there.

Correct. He was a CM but filled in as a striker. Scored 3 goals in like 20 games or something. Really surprising development from him.

some players really come to the fore later in their career.

If he was at West Ham or Everton, we would be looking at him as a player ready to make the step up.

This 4231 doesn't fit him actually. A 433 with him Matic and Pogba would be a balanced one.

He has better shooting technique than all our forwards. Maybe he could teach them a thing or two

Yeah he needs that little bit of license to get forward. I wonder if we could get away with him playing like a young Roy Keane, with a Michael Carrick type behind him? Bruno obviously plays really high up too.

Not really, it's only the last few games when he's added goals to his game but his passing is still pretty limited. We certainly wouldn't be looking at him. But as an academy graduate with great attitude and recent improvement he certainly deserves chance to start over some washed out players like Matic.

we would be looking at him if he was at another club. It’s certainly not just his goals.

McTominay is starting to really become an important figure for us. That low drive of his has become a thing we can rely on. In Pogba's absence he's going to be important driving forward from midfield. A throwback to the old box to box midfielders of yesteryear. I have been sceptical about him. I hope he continues to show I misjudged him.

He's our most underated player.

He has to start every game for me aside from when we need/want to rest him. He's also the only one of the three options we can actually play with Pogba who has enough in his locker to make it work.

He also seems to score a lot of goals where he just easily passes the ball in but from situations/positions where it shouldn't be possible to.

7 games in 30 apps this season

The same return than his previous 84 apps

Genuinely one of the better finishers at the club... Certainly one of the best strikers of the ball anyway.

His striking technique is very good, another big goal from him tonight and he won several headers in midfield when West ham were punting.

Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time
He's been good these last four games. I think some are going overboard though as he'd been quite poor for the six matches before that. Most of his games before that were somewhere in between - not as bad as he was during that poor period but not as good as he's currently playing.

I'd love for him to continue like this but it's a bit silly that some are talking like it's normal. He has to prove that he can keep it up consistently (which hopefully he will).

He’s such an underrated player. He’s not the finished article yet but he has so many good attributes - tall, physical, drives well with the ball, good shooting technique, good stamina etc. He’s 24 now so getting to the stage where he needs to start making the last four games a typical performance. He can do it, just tighten up his positioning and defensive game, getting a bit bolder in attack and he will be a fantastic player.

To be honest he looked miles better than Rice tonight and some on here think he’s a nothing player.

I bet if he was playing for some other club he would have been rated highly by us fans. The guy is built like a tank and never tires. Beast of a player.

come to think about it, I think he may have been the bud driver, which is why Jose played him.
No, Jose threw him under the bus by playing him as a defender in that game in which he attempted sabotage against West Ham. Mourinho was one of the worst things to happen to this club.

I really like him. His progression has been very good and he’s definitely going to be a mainstay in our midfield in the near future. And it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling to see an academy product in our midfield.

It's not just his goals, there is a change in his overall game too. He was always a good dribbler with many runs from the deep but his passing has improved. Pings long passes with pace and precision now.

Yesterday he was 1v1 with west ham player near half line, he did a causal chop and then started dribbling past players.

Also he has 7 goals in around 1900 mins averaging a goal every 3rd game.

He replaces the goal scoring Pogba we expected from Juventus.

Hopefully his passing can be a bit more consistent to replace Pogba as a whole. He has plenty time on his side and he is showing signs of being able to do so.

His improvement has been a huge highlight of the season for me. If Pogba does end up leaving I think we will be fine with VDB and Mctominay taking over his minutes and just focusing our CM search on a proper dmid to let us play a 433.
