Do we honestly think there's a big signing that's been done in recent years that hasn't started with tapping up?
Not too often as overtly as some clubs seem to get away with. There’s always going to be illegal contact, you are correct, but few do it as brazenly as some clubs do.

He has a release clause which everybody knew of. Hardly tapping up since he was fair game for every club.
A club being so overt in the media with its adulation of a player & announcing its hopeful intentions will potentially sway decisions by said player. It may not technically break the ‘law’ of transfers, but it certainly leaves a lot to be desired.

But, like professional fouls, some do it until punishment, if they ever get punished.

That’s easy when every other team in the league is your b*tch
What has the other team have to do with it here?

I loved Eberl's (Gladbach's sports director) answer today a lot who was asked the same about Dortmund's tapping up on their players and even their coach... He just said that everybody does it and he acts the same with other clubs...

When you look at the Maguire fee and what Bayern pay for this talent. You have to admit they know how to do business. What a bargain.

Hope we go all in for Konate now.

So similar to how United was under Sir Alex until he retired in the prem? German clubs don't have as much of a veto between rivals as United and Liverpool do, but pretty much any other club was fair game for us and we managed to lure stars away. Cantona and Rio from Leeds. Berba and Carrick from Spurs. Van Persie from Arsenal. Chelsea I actually can't think of any examples right now.

It's just what happens when you're the top club for a prolonged period. United had that aura, it got a bit tougher in the prem as we then competed with City and Chelsea by the end, but generally it's the same deal. The best team will be able to poach from the others even if they're good clubs.

But to be fair he had a release clause and multiple international top teams wanted him. It is not Leipzig's fault that he chose Bayern over some other top teams. It was the same with Lewandowski. It is not like Bayern forced the clubs to sell those players to them, it was the players decision. If Lewandowski wouldn't have gone to Bayern, then he would have ended up at Madrid. But Lewandowski prefered Bayern, same with Upamecano. And in last 4-5 years Bayern haven't actually bought any player from their competitor who was siginificant improving Bayern/ weakening the rival team
Don’t disagree. I’ve never said it’s the clubs fault - but the mindset of the players in the German league is extremely Bayern friendly, and it ruins the excitement of an otherwise talent-flooded league. They all want to play for Bayern. I don’t find that strange because it equals a title every year, plus a good shot at UCL - but I do find it unexciting.

Upamecano could go to hundreds of clubs in the world. Same with Lewa, Hummels, Neuer etc. They chose their club’s rival though. If I really loved my club, I’d go abroad over my club’s rival as to respect my club - that mindset is not very present in Germany it seems. In England you rarely see transfers like Campbell from Spurs to Arsenal - you rarely see players move from Everton <-> Liverpool, United <-> Liverpool, or United <-> City. City are even these days including it as a clause when selling some of their youngsters, that the buying club can’t sell to us. That animosity I think would benefit the overall experience of the Bundesliga.

I had the strangest dream the other night, I saw Petr Cech, David Luiz and Willian in an Arsenal shirt, while Giroud was wearing blue. I know I must have been dreaming because in England players never transfer to their rivals, if they really love their club.

Great signing for Bayern. I always felt that CB's were the weakest area of the squad and they are addressing that well with Upamecano. If Lucas can find his Atletico form, they will have a great partnership together

He had a release fee and clearly had a choice of clubs to pick from. It has nothing to do with knowing how to do business in this case.

Was Sol Campbell wearing an Arsenal shirt too?

It actually does. We got absolutely fleeced on Maguire, no club aiming to win trophies would have spent £80M on an above average defender. We need to actually look at players with clauses like Upacemano.

All players who were deemed surplus to requirements by their former clubs.

What do people think of Lucas Hernandez who’s at Bayern ? He’s left footed and was great last time I watched him although that was a year or so ago. If I’m honest I’m not bothered about Upamecano going to Bayern as I think Kounde and Konate are both better from what I’ve seen.

Oh, don’t get me wrong. Bayern’s open pursuit of Upamecano was embarrassing. I simply meant that it was no hidden tapping up since every club knew he could leave for 40m

Good signing for Bayern and I hope he does well. If they can get Sule performing to a good level again, then the CB pairing could do really well for Bayern.

Wow. That is definitely some in-their-prime heavyweights of the football world with interest from mighty Juve, PSG, Barca, Real, United, Liverpool, City and Bayern, who despite all that, chose to screw their club over, more than it was a case of zero interest from any wealthy enough foreign club which then forced the selling club to ship them off as deadweight to their rival who also only picked the player up as a squad player / short-term solution. Is your next example the mighty transfer of Silvestre going to Arsenal - because that transfer would win you the argument, since it was definitely a carbon copy of Lewandovski, Hummels or Neuer joining their rival as the whole world tried to sign them.

Totally get what you are saying & you’re right. I may be incorrect using that term as it implies a level of covertness (if that’s a word), but I don’t think there’s a specific term for what Bayern did. Probably needs to be & needs to be more restricted.

Anton downplaying how Bayern have got this man for near enough half what we’ve paid for our No.5 is deluding themselves.

Great business from Bayern.

Is that the best you can do

The only reason Bayern has been any good over the past 10 years is because you tap up and get a free pass on any talent coming out of basically any German club. I think for the good of the league as a whole they should just ban Bayern from signing Bundesliga players.

So we have it straight from his agent that he has a clause, wants to leave, and is considering offers from two Premier League clubs and Bayern.

Do I understand right that, when he chooses to join Bayern over those, the Bundesliga will be regarded as a worse league by the Caf than if he leaves for one of the two?
That is some sound logic.
'Free pass' :houllier:

Name 2-3 players Bayern wanted from Bundesliga teams in the past 10 yrs that have rejected them and gone elsewhere / stayed at their clubs. Go on.
Well KdB and Sane come to my mind but I agree with your sentiment. Sane is anyways playing there now. Bayern more often than not get the players they want from other teams participating in bayernliga.

Expect BRPA members to tell you otherwise though.

Don’t you think we were interested in buying him? The player decides where he goes, even more so when he has a release clause. There was probably at least 10 clubs “interested”, but none would have made an official bid until they knew he was set on joining them.

It’s not football manager where you bid the release clause and get to open talks with the player. I wouldn’t be surprised if we were interested (as reported) right up till January, then backed off once we realised he was heading to Bayern.

Or maybe they chose to stay in London where their families are well settled?

Well, outside of Germany most players dream to play for Real or Barca. In Germany, some dream to play for those two too, but most players dream to play for Bayern. So what? Bayern is one of the biggest and most successful clubs in the world and a lot of players want to play for them. Especially in Germany.

England would be the same with United, if it wasn't for plastic clubs rising with ridiculous money.

That's just not true. Basically a flat out lie.

The main reason for Bayerns success over the last decade were players like Ribery, Robben, Lahm, Müller and Schweinsteiger. 2 of them were at the time the most expensive purchases from abroad in club history. The other 3 came from the own youth academy.

Even Lewandowski had no impact on winning trophies until last season. Even Klopp said when Lewandowski left, that he won't make them any better. At the time he was right.

The only player with real impact you could argue about is Neuer. But for Neuer it was either Bayern or United. Not Schalke or Bayern. And he chose Bayern for obvious reasons as a german international. And considering his contract was running out, Bayern paid a fair sum of money for a GK at the time. Not even to mention that Schalke was not really considered to be a 'rival' of Bayern. They couldn't care less if he moves to Bayern or United.

Other superstars like Alaba (youth), Kroos (youth), Thiago (Barca), Alonso (Real), Vidal (Juve), Coman (Juve), Gnabry (Arsenal-SVW), Boateng (City), Martinez (Bilbao), James (Real), Coutinho (Barca) and others were also not tapped up by Bundesliga competition. Seems weird to me after your bolded comment.

The more i think about it, besides Neuer and Lewandowski, there is probably not even a single player Bayern bought from Bundesliga competition, which had significant impact on their international success over the past 10-12 years.

There have been a few tap ups, but most of them flopped, had no significant influence or would have been replacable by any other decent player.

Upamecano could've chosen many other clubs around Europe but he chose Bayern because they're a huge club that gives players the opportunity to win the biggest prizes in football. They're also a club that suits Upamecano's skillset stylistically, which IMO is a important factor in his decision. There is a few things that need to be ironed out defensively but at 22 years of age he's a player with high potential and is ready to contribute straight away in Bayern's extremely aggressive high press.

It's a very exciting signing for Bayern fans and I wish him the best, because I've followed Leipzig closely for the several years and he's a very good player.

And let's not forget, both Ribery and Robben were rejects at their old clubs. Madrid was done with Robben and Ribery's flirt with Germany largely stems from the fact that France ridiculed the shit out of his appearance.

It's getting old hearing the same old whining about Bayern. Nobody whined like that when it was Madrid or Barca, but this time it's Bayern. Must be a mistake, must be cheating, clearly Bayern can't be strong enough to be attractive to anyone. It's a German club for crying out loud, those louts just don't know how to play football properly... /s

What seems to be happening to me is that Bayern's picks don't matter. At this stage, the only winning move for Bayern is not to buy anyone. From any club. Ever. Cos as soon as Bayern buys something, people will unironically talk about Bayern's poaching in a thread where Manchester United fans dismiss the same player 2-3 pages earlier. The funny bit is, if you look at the past 10 years, Bayern has somehow figured out how to rejuvinate a team with players that are decidedly not on the same level as Ronaldo, Mesis or Bale in their prime, and Bayern makes them better. Nobody acknowledges that.

Robben? Most people thought he was a literal glas cannon when he came to Bayern. Sneeze at him and he's hospitalized. And that had been true for large parts of his career, even at Bayern, and yet people still acknowledge that he was a main contributor to the era that is named after him and Ribery.

Lewa? Yeah, sure he was good for the odd 4 goals in a game in a clinch, but he wasn't reliable. He's actually aiming to beat Gerd Müller's legendary record this year. A feat none in Germany ever expected to see in their lifetime with modern football.

Thiago, who some considered a genius last season? Only reason he came to Bayern is Barca played him so little that a clause in his contract dropped his fee from 90 million to just 18. That's how little they thought of him.

On the other hand, Götze? Yeah, send that bloke right back. Total failure. Hummels? Decent, but his leaving for Dortmund was not nearly as paingful as seeing Alaba go. And there are just so many stories of players from other clubs that couldn't cut it at Bayern, because surprise, Bayern isn't just where they are because they get players on the cheap, they actually have to perform at a higher level. Constantly, for 10 years now. Everyone else is free to join in on the party. Leipzig should have the cashflow to make that happen, right? What about City, with their infinity oil money? Domestically or internationally, there are enough other clubs that should by all rights be on equal footing with Bayern. Yet some clubs are busy infighting in their own management for ego reasons while other clubs seem to try to complete their FIFA 21 setcard rather than actually manage a rl club with rl money for rl competitions.

But... I don't want to end this on a ranty note. It's fine for people to pick on Bayern. It's been like that for quite a while now and honestly, having lived through it, I'd rather have this than people talking about FC Hollywood again. I only dropped this post to point out the massive hypocrisy some people have. Hate on other clubs because they're not your clubs, not because they are doing what you wish your club could do... snap a finger and buy a player because the other club still hasn't figured out that a buyout clause is a really shit idea if you don't want to lose your players. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
