Historically, the third year is what separates the good from the great. Lots of teams retain the title, but since the 2nd world war only Liverpool in the 80s and ourselves under Fergie (twice) have done 3 in a row. Liverpool have been at that high level for two seasons already, even if they only actually bagged 1 title during that time due to City's excellence.
Thats a fair point. Their 2nd place I think wins them the title in any other PL season bar 1. So thats 2 years of incredible title winning form and a CL.

Where did I say they were phenomenal in one specific year? I'm generalising over a 3-4 year period... 'phenomenal' may be going a tad overboard but they have been at the very least 'very very good'.
Well their very very good was worse than us in 17-18 it seems, considering they ended up 2 places and 5 points below us. They were on route to being a top class team that year. But they've actually been a top team for just 2 years. There's no beating around the bush or ambiguity here except you seem to want to stretch that duration for no apparent reason. 3 years? 4 years? Are you suggesting they have been phenomenal this year, or 17-18 or maybe 16-17 (both years 4th place)?

No doubt it has been 2 years of that. But important to note that they didn't win the title that year. Level-wise, yes it counts for that particular discussion for sure, but they did come 2nd.

@PickledRed

I'd appreciate it if you'd share your highly valued opinion on the following:

United have scored more goals, conceded less, have a higher GD, won more games, lost fewer and accumulated more points than Liverpool this season.

Did you (or anyone even remotely associated with PL football over the last few years) believe this would have been possible before the season kicked off?
No. I thought Liverpool would finish comfortably above United. Who didn’t?

As recently as December your scenario appeared unlikely. Events happen. Stuff changes.

My chief note of caution is that things change quickly. By April the tables may turn. Unless you’re in financial ruin or a hopeless spiral, the top clubs are never in the level of strife that some have you believe. Liverpool are in a poor moment right now. Let’s see.

So having fans at Anfield makes the difference above & beyond any other club, their unfair advantage has been taken out and now they found their true level.

Here's me thinking football ability & good coaching was the difference.

Glad we cleared that up

"At the moment we don't plan on signing Salah, but certainly it would be an honour to have him."

- Rumenigge
@Hansi Fick did point out that this was in response to questions by Egyptian journalists about Salah at the Clubs WC. Rummenigge was basically just being polite here.

Sigh. I know it's his MO but what's the point in buying two emergency CB players in January and leaving them on the bench till fecking March.

The dippers are well and truly down. 0(!) death threats received for this post
I dont get why people keep making up random reasons they're weaker this season. Its really, really obvious if you just watch a game from 18 months ago. Their players are on holidays and phoning performances in. They have been for a good year.

People seem to ignore that they weren't playing particularly great football at all last season and they won the way champions do but the signs were there.

They were for the first half of the season or they were playing a hell of a lot better than the 2nd half of the season. There was a few tight results and they weren't smashing teams every week but they were a better team than they've shown recently.

So Fabinho is being rested against Leicester, Everton and Leipzig. Hell be resting where all the other dropped shit players will be resting (VvD, Gomez, Keita, Matip, Jota).

Note, they're all rested because they are shit and have been for 18 months. No one is injured except one, and only one, player: VvD. And that's just minor. And he's shit anyway, remember Villa game?

Where the grass is greener.
Leicester always seem to bend over backwards for them and they'll do it again tomorrow. 3-1 to the mighty Liverpool, Salah to be crap yet somehow get a brace.

I expect Liverpool to recover tomorrow and beat Leicester.
That's partly because Rodgers always sets up exactly how Klopp wants him to. Bit worried about the Everton game. They might fancy it this time around and we haven't scored a league goal in open play at Anfield since West Brom in December.

It would be true to your form, win one, lose one. You reckon he’ll try his new CB’s?

Yeah I think Kabak will play tomorrow and Henderson will move into midfield with Wijnaldum and Thiago or Jones. Got a feeling he'll take Thiago out though personally.

It's on at 4:30am here so I'll have to wake up and see what happened.

Haha not a bad idea. If I see the TAA, Thiago and Klopp threads at the top I'll know how it went.

Imagine if they go from nearly breaking the points record in the PL to not getting CL football in just one year, with essentially the same team and manager.

You'll just get the same old shite about it being a "crazy season" and having lots of injuries like 100% of the PL aren't in the same boat.

This is absolutely hilarious. Self combusting in front of our very eyes. Klopp out! McManaman squirming too.

We were told they were the best English team ever after winning the league last year - you’ve got to fecking laugh at that claim now.

Give peas a chance.
Would love to see their points tally compared to teams around them since lockdown, because if memory serves they weren’t exactly brilliant when football came back. The argument would be that they already had the league sown up... but there’s been a serious backslide.

6 points behind a team you finished 30 odd points ahead of last season. Just injuries eh :)

Sorry 37 points

Thiago's been a massive flop when he was supposedly going to take them to the next level.
