I think we're prepared to play the long game with AWB, and see how Laird develops his came over the coming year or so. It's also the right call in my opinion, we have more pressing areas to focus our recruitment in the summer.

To be honest, those calling for AWB to be replaced, are the names being touted really any better? I remember Aarons being torn to shreds by Rashford last season, and he doesn't exactly have TAA like output going forward to justify his defensive frailty.

We play with our wingers high and wide, is there any full back in world football other than AWB you would rather be consistently in those 2v1 positions?

I find Lamptey a very overrated player, a RW playing at RB and I expect his hype to die down in a year or two's time.

He gets too forward all the time on instinct, he wont have that defensive balance that Ole clearly looks from his fullbacks - he spends most of his time making super fast runs in to the opposite corner flag and with his very average defensive abilities, it will leave our defenders like Bailly and Maguire very open down the right hand side. Personally if we had signed him instead of Wan Bissaka I dont think we would be high as up as we are on the league as we would be less balanced defensively than people seem to think with our 'weak' player.

Trippier is much more balanced and experienced, reliable whilst being able to attack and defend to a premier league standard.

I completely agree. I don't see what all the hype of Lamptey is. If there is a player I'd like us to sign from Brighton it isn't Lamptey, it's Sully March. Or maybe I just really like saying Sully March...

Papers saying Bayern or Utd would have to pay £30-£35mil for Max Aarons this summer. Seems more expensive then i would think the player would cost. Not really seen him play this season, must have potential for clubs like Utd and Bayern to be interested.

Aaron's isn't coming here for certain if that's the case. We have glaring weaknesses elsewhere and 35 million is a good percentage of any summer budget that's allocated. If competition is needed there's always Dalot to return on loan.

Trippier has a year left on his deal by the summer. Milenković at Fiorentina, who is primarily a CB but can also play RB, is in the same boat - contract expiring next summer. Either option should be available at a reasonable price.

Perhaps Milenković would make more sense as he helps with the CB need as well but Trippier would offer a genuine attacking alternative to AWB.

Maybe both if the price is right. Allow the majority of the transfer budget to focus on a RW and a CDM (the type of which would depend on what happens with Pogba).

I'd personally go for both if it was true and then look to add in a left footed CB in the following transfer window.

Leaves us with a new CB, a attacking experienced alternative to Wan Bissaka like Telles on the left and a left footed CB when we feel we have move on Tuenzebe or Bailly/Lindelof.

AWB Milenković Maguire Shaw
Trippier Lindelof Bailly Telles

with Tuanzebe as the versatile back up seems a good balance with depth.

I’ll admit I have very little idea what Milenković is like as a player beyond our supposed interest in him and a few YouTube clips. Is he the pacy partner Maguire seems to need?

Kounde seems like the dream option but his price would limit our ability to improve the team elsewhere.

Personally id rather the budget was blown on a top CB partner for Maguire than any other position. Would happily have Trippier on the cheap.

So we have
AWB
Dalot on loan
Laird on loan
and Williams who can play there as well

we dont need another RB
So who would be your back up next season to give AWB a rest / a different threat down the right-hand side in appropriate games?

I think Trippier would have been a fantastic January signing at a reasonable price.

Would have provided a genuine outlet for our anaemic right hand side and allowed us to play an effective diamond system in certain matches.
I completely agree. Some may say it wouldn't have been a good signing because of his suspension but I say it WOULD have been a good signing BECAUSE of his suspension. Assuming he was available, the suspension would probably make his price drop a bit considering he would be out for 10 games. But that still leaves plenty of games left and I'd rather have him for some games this year rather than none. If we go after him in the summer then it will make absolutely no sense to me as to why we didn't in January...

AWB is still learning his position. None of the players we already have will offer him anything to help him improve. AWB is our long term solution. I'd like to see a veteran RB come in to push him a little and also help teach him. This is why I think a 30 year old Trippier would be perfect...

I agree, a veteran RB like Trippier would be good for short term. Lets us see how Williams, Dalot, Laird develop.

Id see how laird and dalot do this season and then next season Id keep one of the three as back up and loan the others out (or perhaps sell dalot if a good offer comes in?)
But id wait to see how laird does - hes got the potential to be the best of the lot - next season he might be ready to be in the squad or he might need a year in the championship (or even abroad like dalot)
we still have a good chunk of the season left so lets see if williams plays, how laird develops and lets not forget that at 21 Dalot has managed to play n 17 games for a title chasing Milan side this season (having started in half the league games since new year)

It was idiotic of Dalot to get loaned to Milan. Should have found a mid table club in Serie A / La Liga and got some valuable experience.

I think he has some attributes which can be developed into a top quality right back but has too many missing pieces at this time.

Brandon Williams should develop as RB because he is right footed, he doesn’t have any future as left back!

Manchester United have plans to sign a new right-back this summer in order to provide competition and cover to Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The Red Devils retain an interest in Kieran Trippier, but are unwilling to meet Atlético Madrid’s demands to sign him.

Napoli’s Giovanni Di Lorenzo has now emerged as a target for the Old Trafford club, as per La Stampa, relayed by Il Napolista.

The 27-year-old is currently with Italy, preparing for Sunday’s Euro 2020 final against England at Wembley.

During the course of the European championship, the defender has admitted he likes the Premier League, and this has caught the attention of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

According to the claims, Di Lorenzo has attracted the interest of United and they consider him ‘suitable’ for their league.

If Solskjaer and United want to snatch the player away from the Naples club, they will have to put a €20m offer on the table.

For now, there’s only interest from United and one needs to have patience to find out whether it will be converted into an offer.
Di Lorenzo being linked for £17m. Probably bullshit to drive the search algorithms around the England-Italy final. But I wouldn't say no, if true.

Mazraoui has been tearing it up at Ajax. I'm really impressed with his attacking play. 9 apps, 4 goals, 3 assists. Originally a midfielder, very comfy on the ball. Had some fitness issues these last 2 seasons but seems to be back in full swing. Contract expires this year. Here's an old compilation:

Whats happening with Dalot? Is he staying or being sold?
Think his contract is up in summer 2023 so I would guess if he does not sign a new one over the coming months then most probably he will be off?

Personally I think Laird looks to be huge prospect and I would be happy enough with him coming into our squad next season as back up / competition to AWB and getting a bit of money for Dalot before he can leave for free

Yeah I feel the same as I think Laird is good enough to at least be back up to AWB and after a season long loan at Swansea in The Championship he’ll be toughened up a lot, with Varane as the right sided centre back he’ll get great experience and guidance alongside him too.

Laird should definitely be given a chance to make the RB spot his own. But in the event he doesn't, there's a young kid at Ajax (Devyne Rensch) who looks like he's gonna explode on the scene very soon and has a strong technical game along with being extremely comfortable on either foot. Still 18 but has huge potential IMO.

This position is starting to become more of a concern when I see AWB going forward, would have liked to see us bring in Trippier but certainly not for the figures Atletico were looking for that's for sure

He is class, but best as a CB. Does a decent job at RB.

I don't think Mazraoui would work well under Ole, maybe if Ten Hag is our next manager. He is so offensive, often playing RW or RAM in posession. Amazing player though, but also in terms of physique and defensively maybe a bit light for how United play. Far more a City, Liverpool type of signing.

Mazraoui would probably do best to go to a smaller club first than straight to the top in anyway.

Rensch is probably off-limits for the next 3 years and also a CB originally or possibly CDM. I think Laird is as good as a talent, both brilliant players. Rensch probably a better passer and more vision, Laird far better in the 1 vs 1, more physical, faster, and more of a dribbler and crosser.

Isnt AWB bought as long term solution as a defensive RB? He cost 50m. He was famous for solid defending and didn't attack much even back in crystal palace.

I personally love having Wan Bissaka in the Squad.

The problem is that you can't always use him in the first team because he is a very defensive player.

I'd personally never sell the lad as long as he is happy; just get an attacking RB and play the fullback we need in which game, if we need to be a bit worried about the opposition LW (plenty of them in the world) stick AWB, if we have most of the ball and need to score some goals then use an attacking fullback instead.

Hopefully they can compete and bring the best of both a bit too.

Isn't nowadays coach prefer one attack and one defensive full back so always has 3 at the back for 433 or 4231 formation? That's how arsenal plays with Tierney attacking and Tomiyasu defending to make it a 3-4-3 when we have the ball. To play both wing backs then CDM need to drop deep between 2 CB to form a back 3 or switch to 5-3-2 like Chelsea. do i miss anything?

It might be.

However, alot of United fans are drooling of TAA and Reece James; so they will put down AWB as completely useless when he is a good player at what he does - just not everything.

Furthermore, Ronaldo has rejoined, so everyone is crossing in our squad - so the fact that AWB doesn't do it is irritating to people.

Id still argue he has been the best fullback for us this season so far, with nearly all goals coming from Shaw and Maguire's side.

As you said - I think the most balanced approach is having an attacking fullback and a defensive one; if one then gets injured potentially use a youngster.

tomiyasu is a defensive fullback isn't he? How's he been?

Tomiyasu is a good defensive full back for the 3 games he played. He offered nothing offensively for what i have seen. May be that's the way Arteta wants him to play.

Rensch is a couple of years away from being an option. If he wanted to be in a big PL club's academy he wouldn't be at Ajax. He's a brilliant talent. Timber is more of a CB.

You're right he's away few years away from being ready, which is why I mentioned him due to Laird next in line for a opportunity. And if Laird doesn't quite make it or is troubled by injury then Rensch could be a potential option in the future IMO.

Also I'm not sure why people keep bringing up Trent when trying to defend AWB. I personally couldn't care less about assists/goals and it's how the fullback is in the build up phase that makes the difference IMO . Assists and goals will come but being technically good has to be a requirement at the elite level and Wan Bissaka on the ball isn't good enough for the level we aspire to be at.

Ill never understand the heat AWB gets. His job is to play a supporting role to the right side forward/winger ahead of him. He is there to offer them an out when they get double teamed by playing one twos. He is also there to simply support in stretching the pitch. His job isn't to have any attacking channeled through him. He is simply here to support it ala Wes Brown the last time we won the UCL and keep recycling the ball. As opposed to Shaw on the other flank who is encouraged to attack the box. Like Evra did on the opposite flank to Brown. It gives balance to us when we defend. If both our fullbacks were flying ones we'd need our entire midfield to drop back to help cover the fact we have 2 ball playing center halves who like to advance up pitch with the ball. But that isn't our current playing system

The way folks talk on here you'd think he has like 65-70 pass completion statistics and is dispossessed every time the ball comes to him

Mazraoui is arguably Ajax best and most constant player this year, not defensively and offensively. He is running out of contract in july. Both parties claim to have the intention in renewing, but well... Raiola..

Meanwhile Rensch behind him played rb already a lot for Ajax while Mazraoui was away, already made his debut for NL recently.

Timber played rb for both Ajax and NL in the past but is clearly best (very freaking good) at cb.
