If you havent watched Totti play well its probably because you havent watched him in other games than against United. Sublime player with a trick or two, or just a nice weighted pass in almost any match in Serie A if you ever watched Roma.
For the longest time it was impossible to see Zlatan actually play well, there was even a meme about it. Totti's reputation took a hit whenever he boasted before playing us last decade but not really doing much in any of the games.

Maddison and Richarlison. They're both relatively highly rated (Maddison especially) but I've never seen either of them play well. Granted I probably have watched them less than 10 times each outside of games against United.

I agree, most commentators hyped him very much up before meeting us - not sure he did himself? Think he suffered much from Roma meeting probably the best United side in CL ever and being the only real attacking star in the team - he was THE man to keep down as not many others was equal class - Different story with italy where he had Del Piero, Pirlo, Toni, etc, around him. Did also simply just play bad against United.

Going to go ahead and add Pique to this. Of course I know he's a Barca legend but every big game I've watched him in it seems like he's getting skinned.
Same here - Always seemed slow, but somehow very hyped, probably due to his hair (Or just me not watching enough Barca)

Another one: Semedo - looked great on youTube and looked like something we would miss out on when he joined Barca

You sure you're not thinking of Puyol there, rather than Pique?

for a lot of people ‘that’ goal against England was the first time people had seen Zlatan play well - or at least live up to (and exceed) the hype.

apart from the outrageous highlight reel packages of course. It didn't help that for the longest time where i lived it was almost impossible to catch serie a or la liga games either because of how late they were on air or that they just weren't shown. you took it on authority as to how good certain players were.

Yeah I feel the same for some reason. It feels like maybe he didn’t play in many high profile matches in the CL against English clubs perhaps? Because there are plenty of strikers who played in La Liga and Serie A who people seem more aware of. It’s an odd one.

To be fair Zlatan was a beast at the beginning of his career as well. But for some strange reason he underperformed every time he faced english teams for a couple of years. This also resulted in english media and commentators decide he was shit so he had to be absolutely fantastic to turn that opinion, quite impressive that he managed to do so to be honest (just imagine what Pogba would have to do to get Souness to rate him at this point).

To add to the thread - for a long long time Harry Kane was shit when i watched him. Very unusual that I watch Spurs face other teams than United though.

Definitely thinking of Puyol! Thanks. Twas early in the morning and I was half-slumbering when I wrote that :wenger: Puyol never really warranted his Barca legend status as far as I can see.

Was considering Pique too though, he's sort of a Puyol but only 20% better imo. Seems a bit of a dick too.

Pique was excellent for Spain and Barcelona when he was younger, surely you saw some games at his peak. Shadow of the player he was now.

Puyol and Pique definitely belong in this thread.

Not saying neither was a good player, but their careers are massively overrated. Pique was getting one world XI nomination after the other when his performances barely showed for it.

I think he has 4 or 5 world XI appearances which is ridiculous when you consider that the likes of Chiellini or Jerome Boateng have none. Also Vidic and Ferdinand have just a single nonination.

Puyol is another one. His career being massively overrated after his playing days due to a few fairplay videos going viral. He was an average CB for the most of his career. Good leader though.

Kagawa, in all the time he was here I don't think I ever saw him have one decent game, same with Mikhitaryan.

This thread is just a public display of ignorance.
Why? It's not like people are saying these players never play well. OK, some of them might say that but I don't think that was the original point of this thread.

Richarlison scored a banger against us in that abysmal 4 nil loss at the end of the 2018/2019 season.

Upamecano had a 45-50m release clause. Who are we going to get for 25m? Unless it's someone out of contract, or a lower division player, you aren't.
Actually £40m so good luck find a comparable player for 20m.

Some names are just absurd but giving that I only watch United the likes of Rojo, Darmian and Lindelof make a good case. Aldo I can't say how Darmian's doing at Inter

Good shout. Seen a few comments in the past that we should've kept him, always thought he'd get shown up if he played regularly for us.

See I know he was, but my memories of him don't include anything from those teams for some reason. I just remember Xavi, Iniesta, Messi, Villa etc. just walking circles around teams and possessing the ball for 90% of the game.

Yet I can clearly remember him getting embarrassed by Ronaldo on several occasions. No clue why.

I would say the opposite. Richarlison also seems to have a good game whenever I have watched him and his season tally always surprises me because I expect it to be higher.

Good shout. He fit the system but he was never a top drawer defender. If it weren't for the trio in front of him he wouldn't have half the accolades.

Same applies to a lesser extent to Puyol.

Jordan Henderson.

Genuinely don't get what the deal is with him. Even when they cantered to the league last season, he looked average.
