Goalkeeper options...

This is a position that we MAY have to look at in the not too distant future. I exho the sentiments of Neville in that De Gea is no longer a title winning GK. We of course need to have a look at Henderson to see whether HE may be a title winning GK, but if he isn’t - it immediately becomes a priority position.

So, all budgetary considerations taken into account (for those who will throw out Oblak who will cost 100m) - what are the best options on the market?

I’d take Kasper Schmeichel, and I think he’d come but Leicester would want a massive fee. Probably not far off what Oblak would cost anyway.

I know he only moved last summer, but Emi Martinez looks to have the right presence I think. He’s like a bear, a throwback to the great keepers from the late 90s.

I wouldn't go with Oblak. He's similar to De Gea in a lot of ways - a world class shot stopper without much aerial ability who always stays rooted to his line. He's 28 and when his reflexes begin to dull, he might too suffer a precipitous decline like De Gea (and Casillas before him). For a year or two we might go back to having superman in goal, but it isn't a long term option.

We should give Henderson the remainder of the season to show what he can do. If he doesn't look up to it, we should go for a keeper with a good all round skillset - someone who can command his box, come for crosses, sweep in behind the CBs and also make some saves. Pope would be a good choice.

Would be a good story for sentimental value but he’s 34, is no less error prone than De Gea, he’s just not as scrutinised by the media due to not playing for United. His distribution is also pretty poor 9 times out of 10. Has some great saves in him though for sure, the one against Liverpool (Firmino I think?) was top class.

I’d bet my mortgage DDG is still starting for us next season, and we may just see a bit more of Henderson. Really can’t see is spending on a GK in summer

I would've thought it'd be incredibly expensive to replace De Gea, given we'd be likely to have to pay most of his wages wherever he goes. I'd be surprised if it's seen as a high enough priority to be worth the cost.

Agree with this, has to be the way to go. He deserves a shot and we’ll know by the summer what action we need to take.

Shit, thought he was about 30. 34! Yeah fair enough then.

It’s also incredibly clear that De Gea is no longer a really top goalkeeper to be fair.

The team won’t go anywhere of note without a reliable #1.

We will stick with De Gea because nobody is going to sign him on equivalent wages and we are not going to have a player earning that much and not playing - If henderson cant get in the team now he should just go and save his career

If we were in the market for a new keeper then Oblak is the best out there I think - but very expensive... Donnarumma on a free will be a cracking bit of business for somebody this summer though

Unless big changes happen next year , regarding the number position, then it'll probably be best for Henderson to continue developing elsewhere.

Oblak would be the dream.
Donnarumma is running out of contract?

I really hope Hendo will come good, think we should be giving him a run now to see how he does.
Will be tough to get rid of De Gea who is on high wages and clearly not as good as he was

Think I've mentioned Donnarumma in the past too, problem is that he's a Raiola client, not sure I could put myself through that again.

Also agree on the Henderson point, he might not be the answer but we won't know until we give him the same chances de Gea's been afforded.

Would have said Onana before the month started - fine shot-stopper, composed with the ball at his feet, can sweep up behind a high-line and probably wouldn't have cost more than £35m.

I guess being popped for taking a banned diuretic and getting a 12 month ban has slightly changed things though!

A genius ploy to lower his value.

Donnarumma would be the best option by a mile, but I'd break the bank for Emiliano Martinez even though he is 28. I haven't seen too many much better goalkeepers.

Isn't de Gea the top earner in the league on 375k/week? Henderson is earning over 100k/week... That's half a million on two goalkeepers.

Can't see us splashing any more cash in this department until one, if not both, are moved on.

The play for me was to get rid of DDG last season and giving the globes to Henderson. We could then have kept Romero as a backup in case the expectation was too much for Henderson.

Now we are spending 600k per week on goalkeeper but it’s still one of our weaker position

Or he could go on and at 36 help us win a treble like Peter, or at 38 help us do a league and cl double like Edwin.

All keepers suffer from dips in form, its how they respond and how they are treated, as remember when the great dane let in 5 one week and the next week 6 during the 96/97 season, but he was given time off by AF and came back a lot better.

I'd take DDG out of the team and let him go home like AF did and see does that help him rediscover his fine form which he showed us for yrs and yrs.

You mean take him out of the team and let him stew at home during lockdown?

We need someone who is strong at commanding their box and Oblak wouldn't do that IMO. Nick Pope should be a viable candidate if Henderson isn't deemed good enough.

Henderson looks commanding in this game so far. Definitely needs a run of games.

I think we’re stuck with De Gea until his contract runs out. Should’ve been replaced about 18 months ago. Maybe even earlier.

I’d give Henderson the rest of the season so he’s actually given a proper run to see if he’s where we want him to be, the club won’t know unless Henderson is given more than just Europa and the odd game here and there but the reality is that De Gea is going through his very own Casillas decline and I wouldn’t trust De Gea next season so if we can get a fee for De Gea whilst getting his wages off the bill I’m all for it.

My wit's end
I think the most likely order of events is:
  1. De Gea remains as first choice for the rest of the season in order to preserve his value
  2. De Gea is sold this summer
  3. Henderson is first choice in 21/22
  4. We buy an upgrade in 22/23
Hopefully step 4 never needs to happen because Henderson becomes world class. But on the balance of probability, he'll be a level or two below.

Either way, DDG will need to leave. But he also needs to play regularly until he does.

It's not the most fashionable or exciting choice, but Pope absolutely dominates just about every goalkeeping advanced stat. He comes out top in the league on Save %, Expected Goals - Goals Allowed (i.e he saves shots that he shouldn't). He has the most Crosses Claimed and the highest Cross Claim %...which you'd think would help us hugely when defending set-pieces.

He's even third after Ederson and Alisson in most of the sweeper keeper metrics.

The only question mark really is how good is his passing? He isn't asked to do much of it at Burnley.

Robert Sanchez at Brighton looks interesting too.

Pope is definitely the stand out in alot of things as a keeper due to how big he is at 6'6. For me he looks a stand out choice, with ball playing ability the only question mark.

Hes 'only' 6'3 actually. Its one of those universally believed falsehoods that hes some kind of giant. Not sure of the origin, someone mentioned FIFA and i didnt think to check if they meant the game. Hes only an inch taller than Henderson.

He's around 6'6 and taller than Maguire. Read the below link which sheds light on his height being more than what it's claimed to be online and Burnley are the biggest culprits in that regard. He's also standing next to both Maguire and Joe Hart in pictures and is noticeably taller than both.

Pope was also asked about how tall he is and his response was '6'6ish', link below.

If Henderson doesn't work out, I think we should take a serious look at Illan Meslier. He's very young but has a big potential imo and I think will take over from LIoris in a couple of years, maybe even sooner.

I've liked Mike Maignan and Walter Benitez for a while. Haven't seen every game of them though, so not sure what their consistency is truly like.

We could do worse than Rui Patricio, solid goalkeeper and also Portugal’s starting keeper, good quality and pedigree.

Can you tell me what you see in him please? Seen a lot of praise but I see pretty much constant mistakes, certainly enough to outweigh anything good. He’s young, yes, accept that but some of his errors ... jesus ... awful.

Donnarumma already on massive wage with Milan despite his young age.
He would asked 60M signing fee for himself and his agent and > 400k/w salary.
