Is Jadon Sancho really worth the 100 plus million fee?

Can't we just chuck 200m and martial for Haaland and Sancho in the summer. I'm going to be very salty in who gets Haaland.

Upping his stats but like today's goal the defending is very sloppy against the opposition in Bundesliga. I think his true output goals wise in the PL would be half of what it is, combined with him looking better on the left still makes me question a big price for him.
He looks equally good on the right as left, and generally plays on the right 90% of the time.

Not to even mention the crazy amount of assists he gets

He has actually become underrated.

While that’s fair he destroyed sevilla this week who are very good defensively, he’s just a genuinely great winger. He’s obviously not 120m worthy but 70/80m is a fair price Imo

Then what do his UCL stats tell you?

Both him and Lewandowski have been scoring at higher rates in UCL than in Bundesliga yet it keeps being held against them for some weird reason.

How many has he scored in the UCL? They've had Zenit, Brugge and Lazio in the group's this season so not super impressive. The last two seasons I remember his games against Spurs in PSG that they went out too and he didn't do much.

I rate him a lot, clearly a very good player. Just the high prices quoted make me baulk a bit for someone who's not guaranteed to be on the level of someone like Grealish for instance in the PL. I think the disappointment of Mikhi and Kagawa plays a part too.

Graelish is great but also 5 years older and hasn't even been on this level as long as Sancho has been so what kind of comparison is that?

Also funny that people are still using the "BL is defensively weak" angle and yet I see Sane in our team who isn't doing what he has done in the EPL and for every Kagawa etc. there is also someone like Son who couldn't cut it at Leverkusen and is now a big success for Tottenham.
Sancho is obviously not a finished product yet but that makes his output even more impressive.

The assists are just objective data in addition to subjective opinion when you watch him. If you actually watch him you'll see how good his control, dribbling, one touch play, simple passing in the box are. He can play any where behind the striker.

I'm happy to see him deployed on the left where I feel he will play long term. Sancho on the left and Amad on the right would be good to watch next season.

I'm pretty much in agreement with your point, but not the Son example. He did pretty good there.

This.

We didn’t get him last summer & per our emotional fanbase he became overpriced/overrated immediately.

If we don’t go back for the player we supposedly chased all last summer again this summer at [hopefully] a more reasonable price it says more about our scattergun approach to transfers than his footballing ability.

He’s a no brainier of a signing & an absolute step up on anything we have on the wings, but him & let Amad mature for a few years & our wing options should be sorted for quite some time.

this is the signing that still makes the most sense. We’ve surely most of the ground work done now after the last 2 years...We need creativity. We like the best English players. I’m sure the club are still very interested especially at a somewhat reduced fee if that actually materialises. I have a bad feeling we won’t be the only show in town this summer though. With the vaccine being rolled out I think the more ambitious/risk taking clubs will try and get the edge on the competition and I fear we will make the usual mess of it considering our options until it’s too late.

Sancho is another false dawn. He is a cnut. That is all he will ever be. Utd need a Suarez, Cavani, VNR, Ian wright.....etcetcetc. Neto is a good shout. Utd need a guy who will keep trying to kick down a steel door long after his leg is broken.
Who is VNR?

Also i think you've been watching Kickboxer too much mate.

Not relevant but Grealish has been good very quite a few years now, including when they were in the Championship. He was the main reason they came up 3 seasons ago and I think he took them to the playoffs the season before that too.

I am being harsh on Bundesliga you're right, there's plenty of players that have done well from there. It's just Dortmund especially tend to benefit from a lot of space to score against, whereas United tend to come up against a lot of low block, defending deep teams so I wonder if Sancho would be a good fit for us. In my eyes it's quite a risky one and could go 50/50. This isn't purely based on Bundesliga - it's styles, team fit etc. What we really need is an explosive dribbler and Sancho isn't really that, he's got great close control he's but he's been passive in a lot of matches against defending deep teams that Ive seen. He also plays a very similar role to Rashford for us in creating so there could be a clash.

Again I rate Sancho, it's just the price and the risk involved that worries me. For once I think United did the right thing by not spending £100m+ and signing the two young wide players instead. For £50m I'd definitely go for it but Dortmund will want at least £80m. Rather than paying that I'd go for someone like Saint Maximin who I think is as good as Sancho (far worse team) and would cost less, especially if Newcastle are relegated.

Son wasn't good in Bundesliga? That's a new thing.

Sancho is superb player anyways. Club that sign him will be very lucky to have such a player.

There’s no way the transfer fee will be 100m. If someone was to make an offer in the region of 75m-70m I have no doubt that Dortmund would snap their hands off. No doot aboot that

I miss hearing the great man saying that :(

Also on Sancho, I think it'll be £45/50m with £25/30m in add ons. No way we're doing this deal on their terms.

Dortmund were never going to sell him for 100m plus even without the Covid discount, they tried to use Dembele as benchmark but the money they received from Barcelona is largely due to the transfer of Neymar.

I think 55m +15m add ons is more realistic value given all the circumstances, his value will only ever going to depreciate with his contract running out in two years time,.

This is their final opportunity to get the best price for him and they aren't in the strongest of position to negotiate.

This is my worry. His return to form has come whilst playing on the left. Same as Rashford & Martial.

Maybe the Sancho deal has past with the improvement of Greenwood recently and Dalio coming along.
I'd say that maybe considering how Ole has used Martial on the LW and not done much & maybe likely sold - it gives an ability to have a player on the LW that can play on the RW too.

It gives us 2 players on the left and 3 players on the right.

It still worries me spending near 70-100 million on a player that seems to perform mostly if not better on the left.

The other bit of hope I have though is that Pellestri has gone on loan (and loans don't tend to be the best move for youngsters compared to players who play straight in to the first team - for example Amad). I say this because Pellestri is the only non inverted RW we have. Considering Amad and Greenwood are inverted forwards - having a player who hugs the touchline and crosses instead like Sancho does may be useful for a striker like Cavani, Greenwood or maybe even Haaland.

I think he did play on the right side yesterday. He scored from the right side and made the assist to the assist for the 4th goal. He could definitely play on the right for us I think.

No doubt Sancho is a player but can we justify spending that sort of cash on a player that will strengthen the squad more than the team? Rashford, as frustrating as he is, has nailed the lw spot and surely if Sancho was to come, Greenwood/Dalios development would be hindered. It would almost likely be our total budget spent on a player that maybe the position isn't as big a priority as it where last year. We need other holes filling and maybe the money would be better spent there.

I agree with you completely and I'm just trying to see why Ole may still go for Sancho.

1. If Martial leaves - it leaves a left wing option open and it leaves the CF option open.

2. Greenwood and Amad are both right inverted forwards who as we know it are primarily goalscorers more so than creators. Sancho is however more a creator that hogs the touchline and crosses to the striker.

3. Amad and Sancho take over the RW - leaving us a crosser and an inverted forward in the squad with Greenwood being the cover Inverted forward.

4. Greenwood however takes Martial spot as a central striker.

5. Cavani has aged even further by next season and we cant rely on him to the level we did this year. We can try use his as a back up striker a bit like a better Ighalo whilst we aim to target bringing a striker like Haaland in. If Cavani isnt happy with that then Haaland directly takes his spot.

6. Another thing to point out is how Ole likes to use James in the right wing and I can see Sancho being the better version of that.

Sancho, Rashford, Haaland, Greenwood, Amad

Is 5 players competing for 3 spots. Considering that I feel Ole wants 2 players per position I reckon there's a spot for one more right footed player in the squad like James or Shoretire.

Played RW yesterday against Schalke 04. Dortmund won 0 - 4. Sancho's whoscored match rating was 8.85

Sancho's recent Bundesliga matches
Actually, he was most involved on the left. I think Brandt went in to the middle and Reus right. Quite a fluid trio.

If you watch the games you will notice that he is a lot more involved on the left than on the right. That is basically every single game he plays.

He seems to score more often when he plays on the left but gets more assists when playing on the right. Which makes sense really since he's a right footer.

Going by transfermarkt, he's started the last 5 games on the left for 3 goals and 2 assists. He started the previous seven games on the right for 2 goals and 5 assists. In total it's still a 1 goal contribution each game on either side.

In saying that he moves around a lot and some of those goals/assists may have come from the opposite side than he started on. A good example of that is the whoscored link that Mark Pawelek posted just above listing him on a different side than transfermarkt did in 3 of those games.

i was thinning about this today. If Dortmund want to sell for €100mm, it would make no sense to sign him. If we didn’t sign him last window when the price was €120mm, then signing him next window for €100mm should be a non starter as we would have wasted 1 year to save €20mm. For it to make sense, his price has to be around €70-80mm which is still a lot of money especially in the current pandemic environment.
