Nomadland. Very good. A bitter sweet poem to a group living on and outside the margins of American society. A vivid picture of the brutality and beauty, the abandonment and community experienced by those who have taken to on the road living.

Excellent performances that avoid Hollywood slumming-it clichés. The direction too is great: neither tourist romanticism, or patronising pity. The drudgery and leisure, the sadnesses and the joys are there right alongside each other.

It's not a film about the failure of American institutions but about the lived experiences of the human fallout. The USA is condemned by its absence.

The Irishman watched this last night wasn’t very impressed by it, for all the stars in it was expecting better, kept waiting for something big to happen but it lead to nothing. Also the actors all looked very old probably because they are old now but even more so than you expected.

3 an a half hours long too so a bit disappointing really..

Did not have you pegged as a Cameron fan. I'm trying not to imagine you framing Terminator 2 in the Marxist dialectic.
I'm not sure I'd even consider T2 the best Cameron action film of all time with, to my mind, the space marine hokum of Aliens being superior.
Oh...and feck Avatar.

The Seventh Seal

My first Bergman movie! Might as well start with his most(?) famous film.

It was enjoyable enough, though I guess it's one of those films that can be analyzed to death(no pun intended). I really liked the protagonist and the guy playing Death. The humor was also surprisingly good.

Persona worth a watch as well.

Noted.

I try to watch at least 3 movies from all the big directors. 'Persona' and 'Fanny and Alexander' will be my next two Bergman films then :)
Of Bergmans the only i would watch again are Persona, Winter Light, Autumn Sonata and maybe Through a Glass Darkly.

I have not seen Fanny and Alexander. It is one of the few good Bergmans i have not seen. Doubt i will either. My days of watching these arty directors are over.

Atarrabi & Mikelats is the best film I've seen all year. A lyrical, offbeat parable. Eugene Green is a raging covidiot but here he picks up Bresson's baton and runs with it.

Watched Greenland yesterday. A disaster movie starring Gerard Butler had all the makings of a terrible movie, but it's actually quite good. I don't think the film had a huge budget because the focus is more on the family as opposed to the special effects-laden destruction that you typically get with this type of movie. And to the film's credit, it actually works. I liked the characters and was genuinely rooting for them. There are a few absurd moments and some parts are very contrived, but on the whole, it was a genuine surprise considering I went in with very low expectations.

Also watched I Care a Lot. Not good. Not good at all. Not sure how it's getting good reviews. I hated every character in this film. It's all over the place tonally, and due to the fact I didn't care for any of the characters, the whole thing just becomes a slog. At times a straight-up thriller, then a slapstick comedy, with Dinklage playing the role of a Russian mobster as broad as possible. Obviously this melding of genres and tone CAN work in a movie, but it really doesn't in this one because you get the sense the makers didn't know what the hell to go for, so it's all just kind of happening by accident. The film then has the audacity to try and make you have sympathy for Rosamund Pike's character and her partner at a certain point in the film. No thanks.

Of course there is a club. We get together and watch superior films with blue people and sixth form ecological messages like The Smurfs II.

Editing my own posts.
I liked it. Probably is a bit pretentious but thats Kaufman really isn't it.
Kaufman is infinitely better when he has an optimistic director (Jonze/Gondry etc) to level him out ... left to his own devices he’s still very good, but niche and inaccessible... not to mention incredibly depressing

Niche, inaccessible and depressing are all fair criticisms of the movie but thought it was one of his better ones in a fair while despite that. Found it kind of relatable despite everything. The exaggerated aging of his parents kind of hit quite hard for me, due in part to timing. If I tried to tease a rational narrative out of them scenes I'd struggle but it felt pretty easy to understand all the same.

Finally saw it. Spoilt by the fact that I've seen/heard about all the famous scenes, and also knew the main themes and basic plot. Still it was fun 8/10.

Virtuosity (1995): (Spoilers!)
The villain of the movie is a liquid metal terminator, who is from a Matrix-style immersive program, and is an AI built using the personalities of Hitler, Charles Manson, and a fictional left-wing terrorist. It's a 1995 movie about cyberspace. Given the premise, I wanted something sillier than it was. Unlike Johnny Mnemonic, the nonsense doesn't escalate. 6/10.

Attack of the Unknown

A SWAT team transporting a vicious crime syndicate boss must fight their way out of a county detention center during a catastrophic alien invasion.

WTF have I just watch? The acting was bad, the story was worse, well there was no real story, gang leader gets caught, aliens land destroy a few cities and leave, the special effects, well there was none.
Avery poor attempt at a Sci-Fi action film.

Tune in for Love. A South Korean romantic drama. It's kind of a weird film. All very quiet and understated, well shot and OK acting; but then the story moves in weird waves: happy ending-style scenes about every 15 min, until you get a big emotional breakdown that came a little unexpected nearer the end, which doesn't really get resolved well but anyway leads to another happy ending. It's a satisfactory watch though - as long as you're in the mood for an ultimately kinda soppy romantic drama.

Breach

On the cusp of fatherhood, a junior mechanic aboard an interstellar ark to New Earth must outwit a malevolent cosmic terror intent on using the spaceship as a weapon.
I only watched this because it has Bruce Willis in, but even he could not save this utter shite of a horror film, FFS he must have needed the money badly to be in this.
An all-round dreadful film, with an ending that you saw coming a mile off

Glad someone else had the same experience. Expected it to be total trash, but was actually a decent movie.

Overly complicated and mess of a narrative which can be boiled down to: a group of people must use time travel to stop some baddies getting their hands on a device that can cause the end of the world. Some impressive action scenes aside, there wasn't much to enjoy here. Doesn't help that half the time, I couldn't make out what anyone was saying 3/10

Then Came You. A romantic drama with a rather predictable (even for the genre!) and boring story - and a twist. We watched because it features Craig Ferguson, and that's the fun part of it: this really very boring story is spiked throughout with his kind of jokes, and very good ones, too. So if you like Craig Ferguson, this is actually a great watch. But you don't, better steer well clear. :D

Hell or High Water

Not sure how I missed this at the time (2016 on the packet), but popped up for 4 quid a few weeks ago on iTunes and after watching it there, I ended up getting the disc, too.

It's really good, bit of a change of direction for Chris Pine it felt, and Jeff Bridges is good as he always is for me. Solid story (as long as you read the blurb which is a bit of a what the feck, why should you have to), but even so.

Solid 8/10, pushing 9.

Disagree with your overall score, but absolutely with the mix. His muddy dialogue thing is annoying, because that's the one thing he shouldn't take for granted (that the audience can guess what's being said: see Interstellar for more gregarious examples, obviously).

Been watching a lot since last month, mostly brainless crap.

Push (2009):
Sci-fi/fantasy film with some neat ideas, stupid plot, boring characters. Watched it because it was set in Hong Kong and I like the city. 3/10.

Underworld (2003):
The worst acting in a mainstream movie? Actually, extra point for that, it was so bad it made the movie entertaining. The plot wasn't bad. 5/10.

Internal Affairs (1990):
Richard Gere is very good. 7/10.

Running Man (1987):
Yes! Dystopian movie, absolute nonsense and a lot of fun. 7/10.

No Way Out (1987):
Boooo. There's a twist at the end which makes no difference to the movie and means absolutely nothing. 4/10.

Handmaiden (2016):
Korean movie. Opening felt like a setup for a dark story about war crimes, but it becomes clear it's not that. That first twist set the tone, with lots more throughout the film. I think everything (plot, characters) worked great, and there were some standout scenes. Sex scenes became excessive but I'm not complaining. 8/10.

I think he's forgotten that we're not in the thick of the action, we're watching a movie and want to know what's going on

The Remaining

Friends gather at a wedding, but the celebration is shattered by terrifying apocalyptic events forcing them to examine life, love and faith as they must choose between redemption and survival.
I was not expecting much , but it was OK, not the best film I have watched but defiantly not the worst.
It was only after I read the reviews, I found out it was a Christian Horror film, never heard on one before.
The story was good, about the Rapture ,4 angels and all that comes, was a bit preachy in parts, but over all a decent watch.
