Could someone explain this to me?

Why wouldn't you try him
He could mean that they won't both start.

If he's going to piss about with Amad on the bench at the very least bring him on early in the 2nd half so he gets some significant minutes.

I know what he means, but why? Why wouldn't you start him and see what you have?

There's obviously a logical reason I'm not seeing

Because if they get an early goal (or two) he could be part of a historic collapse. Which would be the worst possible debut. Much more sense to stick him on the bench and bring him on if we get a goal or two instead.
If you can't play him now when do you?

Very few decisions the manager makes seem logical to be honest.

You're not going to get a better chance to give a young player a start than when you're 4-0 up from the first leg.

If there's a historic collapse it won't have much to do with an 18 year old wonder kid playing in the team's weakest position. There won't be many better chances this season to start him, we need a right winger asap so the sooner he gets used to first team football the better.

I am not sure giving then 5 min when they hardly get to touch the ball is the best way to help them. Ole talked about Amad like he would be playing soon since first week of january, yet he cant srat him when we won 4 nill, overly cautious

This, plus the way the quote is written (possibly different spoken as always) suggests Ole is talking about Shola AND Amad starting. Maybe one will, though it’s probably unlikely for the reasons you say.

Or maybe he doesn’t want to excite either just yet by confirming on live TV they’re starting for the first time.

Because we're still playing against a dangerous European side. Playing kids from the start is risky - if we did that and an encouraged Sociedad score 2 in the first half, it could become a really nervy night.
My view would be that we approach the game professionally with experienced players, we don't lose the first half, and bring Amad in then with the benefit of a 4 goal cushion for 45 mins

Come on now, there’s no reason for him not to start on Thursday. Just pick a decent team around him.

You can play him now. You just can’t start him. Which is standard for someone so young/new to the league.
Our back four picks itself. Awb bailly maguire telles. That's a good back four.

You could go fred/matic in midfield, greenwood diallo rashford and someone else.

That’s certainly the cowardly approach to the game. This sounds like something Jose would say/do. You can do both, approach the game professionally, and play a potential wonder kid too.

You could but I can’t see the problem in doing what we do with every young talent. Let them build up some experience as a sub before starting them. All the more so with someone as small/lightweight as this kid.

Sociedad are 80/1 to win by 4 goals or more, it's very unlikely to become a nervy night regardless of who starts in utd's weakest position.

So we spent 37m on a player for our weakest position but he's not good/trusted enough to start at home to a team we have a 4 goal advantage over ?
If so, we have the worst player recruitment in the world and everyone involved in the deal should be sacked.

Yeah it’s hard to argue.

I know we really want to see the kids but if we hurl them on against a side like Sociedad it could be detrimental. Coming on at half time might be the best solution.

Goodness gracious, you lot are something else. The kid is 18, just moved here, barely has any first team football, and people are fuming because he won't start midweek. Despite the fact he's made the last three match day squads. I know people talk about the need for patience, but it seems like no-one is listening. It's like hitting your head against a brick wall. The manager sees him in training every day, knows what he's capable of, and will play him when he thinks the time is right. It's not FM. He's got the good of the player and the good of the squad in mind. You sign an 18 year old for what he will do over the next ten years, not the next ten matches.

Give it a rest.

He should start on Thursday. No good reason not to.

Tie is pretty much wrapped and will do us good to see if he can contribute much the remainder of the season.

I wouldn't go playing every kid but just Amad and the backups will cause no harm.

Or maybe, just maybe, you’re being melodramatic?
No, Not really just being genuine. If as Ole just said starting Diallo in a game that we're already up 4-0 wouldn't be fair on him, why on earth did we spend 37 million on him ?
Spending 37 million in the middle of a pandemic on a player that can't even be trusted in such a game is a complete waste. I mean we spent 15 on Daniel James and he seems to be trusted enough to start in the prem.

They’re 80/1 to win. What are the odds against them scoring twice? Or getting an early goal? Because we can have a nervy night and still win.
Of course they could make nervy for us, this season been mad. But Amad will hardly be the one to blame if we do that. He has played in the CL, not like he has no experience at all. I don't understand not starting in the game, with the injuries atm, the squad is getting thin.

I think Amad will start. It would send out the wrong message to start both though which I think is what Ole is saying. Would send the message out to the players that this game is already won. It almost certainly is but its still a decent side we're playin. My guess is Shoretire will come on for Amad after 70 mins

What a load of crap, we can play 10 other first teamers and use a young winger. Their LB is nacho monreal, he’s hardly big strong and quick. Amad will deal with him fine, it’s just ole being overly cautious as usual.
