I’ve supportee Utd and Madrid for the last 20 years or so - please take it from me that Ramos is not the answer

I see a lot of blame on him for the goal. He’s not at fault. Martial was supposed to be covering but he just ran towards the ball and left his man.

but overall, maguire is not a leader at the back. The responsibility is too much. Sign ramos and let him benefit from a proper leader next to him
He is to blame because he headed it to the danger area. He should have headed it to the far side or even behind for a corner.

That's true, however I can see why we want to avoid set pieces at all cost with De Gea in goal. It was a difficult ball to clear to be honest.
True. And with DeGea, Lindelof and AWB our aerial defending is non existent.

Not every defensive header can get out of the box and that was an awkward one.
He made it more awkward than it needed to be by trying to head it in that direction. Head it back the way it came and he easily clears the box.

Quality premier league defender. In bygone years we'd be perfectly happy with him as a squad/rotation option.

Never a Manchester United starting defender letalone captain though. How our standards have fallen.

He is an idiot. We're blessed this wasn't looked at because it's a blatant penalty and arguably a red card...

Poor quality videos / angles like this don't help at all, he didn't connect with his elbow - but this is the only clip you'll see being widely shared on social media to fuel peoples agendas.

I don’t think heading it back the way it came was possible. He was stretching for it and couldn’t get a full head on it.With hindsight, the best option would probably have been to head it backwards and out for another corner. However, in all honesty, I’m more concerned that ASM was standing on his own in the box. I haven’t watched it back but how did that happen?

Yeah, the marking in the box was as bad as it always is too. We have massive organisational issues and players that clearly just don’t want to defend that much.

I think he could potentially have headed it back the way it came, just misjudged it a bit... its a weird one, he looks like he's both stretching, but also not stretching at all!?

But yeah agree - basically he could (should?) have done better/just headed it behind... but the main concern for me is just why we're so shite at defending set plays in general.

Rawkish in the extreme.

And still he gets shit. Literally cannot win in the eyes of some fans.
Oh come on, I like him and I rate him as high as anyone can, but you can't clear a cross like he did straight in the danger zone, in front of goal. It's a mistake that on a good day he does not make, luckily didn't cost us the game.

It’s only a “mistake” if we’re absolutely determined to find a reason to blame him. He got slightly under the cross and couldn’t get the power and direction on the header he would have liked. Which happens. At least he got his head to the fecking ball. By far the more obvious issue in that sequence of events was Newcastle’s biggest attacking threat getting to a dropping ball, deep inside our box, completely unchallenged. And that’s not on Maguire.

I didn't think he made a mistake with the header last night either. I'm more annoyed as to why Saint-Maximin was left unmarked. Still, it was a great bit of technique to sidefoot that first time into the back of the net so I think that goal was more down to his individual brilliance than any glaring defensive mistake on our part.

Newcastle obviously targeted him, Lindelof and DeGea with balls into the box, not what you’d expect from the highest paid defender in the world and best paid player in the premier league, very worrying need to sort these mistakes out soon.

If we are going to get a new defender it would be as well we get a dominant one rather than a fast one as it won’t fix our existing problems.

It does happen, the thing that disappoints me is that I think he better than that and it was evident that he missed the ball, not clearing it like he wanted to. I think it was Fred that was the closest to the drop ball, and should have been tighter to the scorer.

My issue for the goal is that Maguire was heading the ball from inside our 6 yard box, whilst our goalkeeper was glued to his line. There were a couple of occasions yesterday where Shelvey was happy to loft a ball into our box, knowing full well that our goalkeeper was a non-factor. He invites so much unnecessary pressure on our defence.

I thought he was average against Newcastle, too many touches to completely slow the pace of the game and then very poor header for their goal. Also Lindelof being as good as training dummy didn't help either.

I'm going to stick to what said yesterday and not blame him for that goal. The ball is slightly over him which meant he couldn't generate the power on the header, but he did clear it. The issue was that Saint-Maximin was standing all on his own in our box. Shocking marking

I don’t know what was up with him and Lindelof but they looked and played like they were 2 sunday leaguers who’d won a prize to be United starting CB’s. I’ve always laughed off the rumours about Sergio Ramos because really I don’t think he is as good as a defender as he is made out to be but hell, I’d take him in a heartbeat right now if only to tell Harry where to go And just take ownership of the box.

Goal Wasnt his fault, like Lindelof a few weeks back he has to go for that no matter what. Just unfortunate it goes where it goes, but take nothing away from ST Maximum that was a hell of a finish.

For me the stats sum up the positive part of his performance in this match. He did heaps of good things. He was very active both in terms of defending, passing and building up our attack. He was a giant in the air. He is normally active but thought he was more active than normal. But he also had some poor moments, misplaced passes and mistakes. Also more than normal.

I was surprised how poor ratings he got in the newspapers. He got worst ratings of all defenders and almost worst in the whole team. In general he got 5/10, AWB, DDG and Lindelof 6/10 and Shaw 7/10. I personally don’t agree, but somehow every newspaper seem to have the same view.

Manchester evening news -Rating 4
Slapstick defending throughout, from tackling a teammate to assisting an equaliser. Maguire's captaincy credentials become more and more suspect.

The Sun - Rating 5
Often found himself in the right place at the right time to break down promising Newcastle moves in the first-half.

Drove the ball forward with intent to try and get United going but should have done more to head the ball out of the danger zone for the equaliser.

Daily mail -rating 5.5/10

Sbnation rating 5/10
Headed a dangerous ball back into play for Saint-Maximin to equalize. United continue to struggle defending set pieces, but grew into the second half

Stretty news rating 5/10
Shaky during some moments in first-half and clearing header fell to Saint-Maximin for equaliser. Improved after the break and almost scored.

He should definitely have scored again yesterday by the way, had pretty much a free header.

I feel like the harder the headed chance is for him, the more likely he is to get it on target/score it!

Maguire is good at winning headers but accuracy is not his thing.

Every defensive header he makes lands on the opponent, its quite frustrating actually.

Clearly at fault for the goal but besides that, nasty, error he did had a good game. The play against Lascelles is not a foul, I don't know why there's been so much noise around it.

It looks bad in this clip. From the other angle it looked more like a dive or at least not a foul.
