Disgusting. If the market isn't allowed to respond to changes in supply and demand, it will lead to shortages and inefficiencies, which the market prevents. As the harvard professor who designed the system explained:

William Hogan, the Harvard global energy policy professor who designed the system Texas adopted seven years ago, disagreed, arguing that the state's energy market has functioned as designed. Higher electricity demand leads to higher prices, forcing consumers to cut back on energy use while encouraging power plants to increase their output of electricity. "It's not convenient," Hogan told the Times. "It's not nice. It's necessary."
Even more shocking since the respected senator explained this Economics 101 2 years ago:

But in times of crises, where peak demand is necessary to save lives, they should not discourage the use of available energy or milk every last dollar out of people.

Would not being on its own grid have alleviated Texas of such a catastrophe?

I don't want to sound like I know anything about electricity because aside from knowing how to avoid blowing the old-timey fuses in my apartment, I don't, but I think this image should answer your question:

Looks like Neera won't make it.

There's more serious stuff, (she outed somebody in her staff who had accused a senior of sexual harassment, she got a blogger fired from his two jobs for calling her a scumbag on twitter, she didn't tolerate her staff asking Hillary questions about her record, she fired website staff moments after they unionised, she removed criticism of Bloomberg from a report on police brutality after she got his money, she changed her organisation's editorial policies and invited Netanyahu after getting donations, and she suggested that the US pay for Middle East invasions by taking control of oil.)
But, especially if she fails confirmation, she's more comic relief than anything. Some classic moments:

It would have helped as they could’ve drawn on surplus from other states. Also that would put that grid under federal regulations which would’ve made them follow standards everyone else uses.

Just next door in Oklahoma who has a similar climate, and is certainly no shining beacon of infrastructure quality, we had half a day or so of rolling blackouts and that was it as far as I know.

A typical Texan will still cling to the delusion that their state is the best, regardless of five figure electric bills arriving these days. Free-dumb & all that.

They're bred this way. I remember it growing up. They pride themselves on lots of stuff about the State, from the Alamo to being its own republic at one time, and so forth. My cousin will post stupid shit about Texas being this big state and all, overlay with say Germany, blah blah. When I point out that Texas may be bigger than Germany but could fit inside Alaska twice or inside a number of African nations it's crickets. I was once this way in thinking. It's like a bred nationalism for Texans. I no longer see this state as this great thing.

Please petition to bring him in. SF and LA coming to you!
so the government should be allowed to kill people?

Is it only if the victims are LEO? What if the killer is LEO?

Based on your profession and proximity I am guessing you are emotionally invested in this, and understandably so.

Killing is never the answer though.

I’m for it, but that’s beside the point and only a part of his justice reforms. The thinking these days that sees criminals, violent or otherwise, as some kind of victim of society has led to these no punishment policies. Crime has definitely spiked. Maybe due to covid, maybe something else.

Personally, I’m for justice for victims of these offenders. But their voices and that of their loved ones have fallen by the wayside.

I would agree that is most cases the accused should not be seen as victims. You would not better about crime spiking obviously.

I will disagree with you on one thing. Taking the life of a murder because the victims loved ones want it is not justice, it is vengeance. Vengeance is not justice.

Surely that's painting with very broad strokes? Murder is obviously different from theft. And I'd argue that most people who steal shit aren't doing it for a laugh but rather because their circumstances has made them desperate enough. That doesn't make stealing OK by the way, but it brings in a bit of nuance. Furthermore, if you're just punishing stealing then you're treating symptoms and not the cause of them.

If we subscribe to a view that society has no influence on the amount of crime carried out by its population then you're essentially arguing that certain peoples are inherently more criminal/violent/whatever it may be than others which doesn't sound right.

I wouldn’t say it’s painting with broad strokes. These sentiments come in cycles it seems. We’re just riding one wave for now.
Society does of course have a great influence in the criminality of its population. But I care more for the victims of crime. Whether an offender who victimizes another person did it because they were desperate, addiction, or had a rough upbringing or whatever excuse people come up with, they’ve made the choice and committed the act. And that to me comes secondary to victims who’ve been robbed, assaulted, burglarized, raped etc.
