If David Moyes turned United down in 2013, who would've been next on the list?

He should have stayed on. They can make as many documentaries as they like and Fergie can do as many interviews as he used to do - but the simple fact is he knew that City and their oil money were coming and the team was fecked and he wanted to protect his legacy.

Moyes actually wasn't a necessarily bad choice, but he should have been told to forget Chris Woods and Phil Neville and keep the same backroom staff and just be an Ole - in other words, just be the face of the operation with Fergie helping in the background.

Anyhow Fergie fecked up the whole thing because he wanted to protect his legacy. Pep and Klopp and Ancelotti and everyone else were all too clever and all made the right decision.

He was right to quit when he did and he deserved to retire on his own terms. Had he gone on he would have risked becoming like Wenger.

See I disagree with this to a point. I think in Sir Alex’s mind he’d brought through Jones, Evans, Smalling, Cleverley and Welbeck, bought Kagawa and Zaha and if you read his book he was absolutely certain Powell was going to be a great player. In his mind I think he thought the rebuild was mostly complete. Unfortunately for him I don’t think he took into account those players weren’t that good and he was a big reason why we were winning with those players.
De Gea and Rafael as well.

The biggest mistakes were appointing Moyes in the first place and then allowing him to sack all the backroom staff.

At the time, I wanted any of Guardiola, Mourinho, Klopp or Ancelotti. Definitely not Moyes. Promoting from within, or Queiroz or Solskjaer or Blanc being appointed would have been better than Moyes.

Anyone, even Fat Sam would have been better than Moyes. Most of the CAF would have been better than Moyes. At least they wouldn't have sacked the coaching staff or tried to impose their own way.

A different question, is could any professional manager have done worse?

Although Moyes has been quite successful in getting many people to believe we had some sort of crumbling, imminent whole squad dropping to non league standard, he took a comfortable champion to 7th, below even his own average mob at Everton!

Could anyone do worse!?

I don't think Pep ever was interested. Maybe Klopp?

But other than those 2 anyone else would have struggled.

Once he decided to retire it might had been better for him to stick one more season, or two, in order to get a replacement in line that was better than Moyes.

Mine would have been José. At that time, I saw him as being the strongest person to take over from Sir Alex Ferguson as well as someone capable of dealing with the Glaziers.
I accept that many will disagree with this in hindsight. But at the time I believe that to be correct.
I cant stand Mourinho and generally hate the football his teams play but I think you are right. I think he would have made a far better transition from the Fergie era. We might even have been able to keep winning things if he had got the job at that point. By the time he took over he had taken over a poisened chalice.

Perhaps but I think his sister-in-law had passed away that year and so he wanted to support his wife which influenced when he quit.

There's a lot Sir Alex should have done, principally not choosing David Moyes.

I'm still traumatised by the day it broke that Moyes was getting it.
Could utterly not believe it, after our leaks of how the next manager had to have this vast range of attributes and experience, and he matched zero of them.

Then year by year, the list of managers we supposedly wanted before him gets longer.

If it was like that it would explain why thinks went the way they did. Like everything points that there was very little, if any, planning to make the transition. For instance what City did preparing the club for the arrival of Guardiola seasons before he actually signed for them.

Agree with you there but The Glazer's have little vision beyond short terms gains. I'm not sure how involved Ed Woodward was at that stage but we saw that he just as clueless as Moyes.

True he's much better at PR than he is football management that's for sure.

The squad Fergie left needed some work no doubt but a top manager would have kept it in the top 4 at least and in a title challenge with a few key signings.

I think if we had given it to Mourinho back then, we'd have seen a different Mourinho to the one we actually got and It might have worked out better, so even in hindsight I think it still should have gone to him, I think the one we got was just far more bitter and jaded
