Don’t take it personally, you seem to be. I can’t credit Ole for it, it’s like saying Rome wasn’t built by Romulus and Remus and made great by Caesar etc but by the more modern day Italian presidents. Im hoping you can see who I’m crediting for man Utd being in this strong position as a gargantuan football club. It ain’t ole that’s for sure. He in fact gets zero credit for our youth system. Next you’ll be telling me you built Big Ben because you we’re near it.
What do you know in regards to what Ole does and does not do? This goes for any manager. People have no clue. It's like when people moan about the team sheet every week even though they never saw any of the training. Ole is doing fine by the youth as have many people and who would never get or be acknowledged. Others not so much but that's to be expected.

And in the same vein how do you know if he’s doing fine then? What????

This is a smart move for everyone involved. I rate Garner so high like most here but reserves and academy is not necessarily a good indicator on how a player will do in first team football

He’s clearly enjoying himself. Showing great desire and application to go with his ability. Whatever happens, I think the lad will have a good career. Hopefully with us

His desire and work rate is what’s impressing me the most! We all know he has great quality on the ball!

Yeah no doubt he will have a career in the PL even if he doesn’t meet the high expectations, but he reminds me of carrick in the way he is just so smart and reads the game so well. Watching him in the academy I always thought he looked like a 28 year old experience head.
I think he will make it with us no doubt

Tyler Blackett, ex United (think LVG debuted him as LB IIRC?) was subbed on for Nottingham.

Kazim Richards (the cnut) scored the equalizer for Derby.

Garner looks well integrated into the team and trusted by teammates. He played in the holding 2 role, but definitely was more advanced of the 2. He got into the opposition box a lot. He's very good in the air. Didn't see much defensive work from him, other than a lot pressing and dispossessions high up the pitch. He didn't shine on the ball, it was a rather typical lower division English game. His first touch did look better than most of the players on the pitch.

Just fyi, this argument makes every manager immune to any and all line up criticisms. It's also a shitty one; I don't need to watch Martial in training to know he shouldn't be playing.

Sat and watched some of that game. As I said last week, he’ll learn so much from this loan from an organisational point of view.

He isn’t pinging it about or controlling the tempo, but he’s tracking runners, maintaining discipline and playing a role within a Hughton setup that is designed to keep Forest in the league and move them up the table. He’s also shown no sign of not being able to compete physically.

The pinging it about stuff comes later down the line. The club already know all about that. These loans are essentially about learning how to play professional football and he’s doing it very well.

Yep I agree with that. He's quite passive sometimes, doesn't look for the ball much and doesn't impose himself on the midfield. But he also doesn't look out of place or overwhelmed by the contest or the pace, which is really the key thing when stepping up from youth football. And when he does get on the ball his quality is very obvious.

While I agree with the bold part it works both ways with VDB he probably isn’t good enough in training. I’m not against Ole’s selection most times I didn’t understand Fernandez starting on Thursday it was one of the rare games he wasn’t needed under any circumstances

fecking hell.
I know. This guy has some real issues. Toxic masculinity and sexism is just one of them. That stuff about Romulus and Remus and Big Ben in a thread about youth football too???

Brilliant summary, thanks for this! Totally agree when you say loans are about experience, the boy needs minutes and he is getting a lot this season in a tough league. Seeing as you possibly watch a lot of forrest games, does he look like he needs another loan next season?

I think he played quite well but not sure if he can perform that well in the PL although he may mature even further.
Don't forget that Mount had a full season in the Dutch premier league and a full season at Derby before he made his debut for Chelsea. Midfielders need time

My wit's end
In the last decade, the only 3 players who I've *thought* were nailed on to make it were Greenwood, Tuanzebe and Garner. Of course, injuries and lack of motivation can always derail things. But Garner is somebody I've been excited about for a while. Really glad he's living up to the promise so far.

I think he'll have a Matic-like career, starting as a #8 then gradually settling into a #6.

Could be a slow burner hopefully. When he is 20/21 we could see a very god player
High praise indeed, but possibly you meant good?
Joking aside, I wonder if the club gave Matic a three year contract, so that Garner could be a direct replacement for him, which would be summer 21/22 when Matic's contract expires?
The lad has definite ability with passing, and I've noticed that he seems to be winning quite a few headers now. He may have another loan next season, as I think you could be right him being a 'slow burner'. Midfield and defensive players will take longer to mature I think, as they have to think on their feet, as more attacking players seem to be more instinctive, not really knowing why they do something, they just do it.
I have high hopes for James Garner.

It's alright, I'm from the country.
He has a real chance of making it here.

He played at centre back up until he was 15 before moving into midfield. I saw him a couple of years ago when he had been moved back to CB for a couple of games due to injuries there and he was commanding.

As someone has stated above he will probably end up as a #6 - the most important position on the field?

Not a lot of people may be aware that he is from Birkenhead, Merseyside and grew up in a house full of Liverpool fans. Thankfully though he appears to be making a smooth transition into adulthood.

His footballing hero is Steven Gerrard.

I came across his dad on twitter and being nosey had a look at his account, I was shocked to see it full of Liverpool related stuff

Anyway, as we know who you support as a kid doesn't really mean much in the grand scheme once you get playing.
