How the feck wasn't this checked?

Thank feck it wasn't but it's mental how it was missed.
Tbf we don’t know that they didn’t check it in the background, but it certainly looks like it deserves a look!

Fulham v Sheffield United. Was an absolute last minute stonewall penalty for the Blades, which somehow the on field referee and VAR didn't give. 1-0 to Fulham.
You could maybe understand the on field ref not catching it, but the video ref can't be missing them

Unbelievable

They’re fecking awful. I honestly think I would do a better job as VAR, and I say this as an invitation to the FA to invite me to be VAR for a day to show them how shit these supposed referees are. I’d actually do it better from my sofa than they are from their stupid bus.
It is crazy. Leaving aside the bias for one team getting more decisions than others, the officials are just completely and utterly shit at their jobs on or off the field. You could excuse them the dog's abuse they would normally get but they've been free of that for a nearly a year now with zero fans and players being carded if they utter a feck you to the ref.

Once fans are back the officials will only get even worse. VAR may actually have killed football but for all the wrong reasons, as VAR is doing a great job. It's highlighting vast amounts of both players' faults as well officials'.

Yes, being an experienced referee of international standing in another sport, I agree with you fully. The on field referee gets one take, in real time, and is not always in the best position to view each incident. The VAR has the benefit of using several camera angles, can watch several times and at different speeds. There is absolutely no excuse for the VAR to be making blatantly incorrect calls.

It can't be Incompetence, which is why many believe that there is corruption in the PL.

I think it’s plain in importance, added with the VAR refs being too close to the onfield refs (by doing the same job...).

I think we need independent VAR refs, and also we need to hear the conversation.

if you listen to cricket for example, they are very methodical and factual. I suspect the VAR to ref conversations are a complete cluster feck.

Yes, I agree fully. The VARs should be made up of a separate panel of referees. Why not use recently retired ones, who are too old to pass the fitness tests for on field referees, but have the experience to be the VAR? And if referees were made to be publicly accountable for their decisions that should improve standards. Also, why isn't anyone holding Mike Riley and his cohorts responsible for the clusterfeck he is presiding over week after week?

The concept of VAR is sound. What its introduction has done is to show how incompetent, at best, and corrupt, at worst, many of the referees are.

I agree. Clearly the two sets should work together, but they are two different skill sets, and all that happens is that both are not done property.

the on-field refs that we have are poor, so let’s let them concentrate on being a referee and get better, rather than make them learn more skills.

initially, I thought the issue with VAR was its speed - but it’s the inconsistency, and incompetence.

Mainly aimed at grassroots level but the day any team clap Mike Dean onto the pitch is the day i give up on football.

I think a hand job from a hired lady would be more appropriate for some of the referees. It would confirm what many of us think about them.

My main problem with VAR is even if used absolutely perfectly, by the best referee's in the world.

It kills the moment of a scoring a goal, and no amount of tweaking it will change that.

I notice Rooney has said the same today. Numerous goals in his career where you have a quick glance at the linesman before running off to celebrate/jump in the crowd - gone!

Surely we aren't going to just allow that to be 'the good old days'?
Totally agree. It kills the moment. Goal line tech.. I’m ok with that.. pretty much real time.
Offsides now are horrible. Hairline decisions taking 2-3 minutes.
Fouls in box and handballs the same.
Can’t celebrate a penalty ,scored , without checking a player hasn’t encroached.
Needs to be a fans referendum on this.

Just me who thought that was incredibly harsh to rule out? Yeah, Lindelof knees him in the face. But it's a corner, he's running at pace and jumping to reach the ball. Is it his fault that he had a high leap, and the opposition player wasn't paying attention and didn't bother jumping? Load of shit IMO. If the opposition player tries to get the ball and jumps, that never gets whistled. Load of shit.

Put it this way, I'd be foaming at the mouth if a goal stood after Lindelof got his head taken off by a wild, flying defender

I'd be more angry at Lindelof sucking his thumb in the box not paying attention.

It's a foul, but feck me why on earth is he just standing there?

Just saw the replay, of course it's a foul ffs. He nearly Jorge Masvidal'd the defender's head off. And coming from Lindelof of all people, yikes. Didn't even know he could jump that high.

Honestly I can see it being a 50/50 decision. I personally think the defender essentially got rewarded for not paying attention and only got battered because he chose to let the ball go through, whereas if he jumps to try and reach it, he doesn't get clattered and a foul doesn't get called. "Wanted it more".

Because the ball was nowhere near him and he was turning around to follow the ball.

What do you expect a defender to do when the ball is 5 yards above his head? Turn into Michael Jordan from Space Jam?

Watching European referees officiate matches is a welcome change from the idiots we have in the PL. The Swiss guy last week, the Belgian tonight, both were excellent.

This. Surely the only decision is the card , red or yellow.
Guaranteed that is a Red anywhere else on the pitch.

Amazing. Serious? “ The defender got rewarded for not paying attention”
Ok we all love football and argueing or discussing decisions but really
Defender should have got a red card for not jumping to avoid knee in face ?

Why, why, why is it shrouded in secrecy? The 6 Nations is on right now and you can hear the ref and TMO communicate.

I ask why but I know why, because they make it up as they go along. The don't ref according to rules, they ref according to narratives and personalities.

absolutely astonishing how a simple change would clear a lot of things up. Wouldn’t make refs perfect and we’d see occasional mistakes but at least, some justification/explanation. Might even minimise showboating refs making decisions to suit themselves. Same with time added on. Just stop the fecking clock and restart when poor Alfonso has stopped rolling around.

i cant believe they did a VAR check to see if Lee Mason had blown the whistle.

Lee Mason was also the VAR ref himself when the two red cards were recently overturned right?

And that goes back to my point regarding VAR itself. The technology is great, but you put a monkey in charge ,and it turns into a zoo.

Agree completely. 6 nations is highlighting how it can be executed and my rugby mates laugh at footballs VAR.

What was the most rediculous thing about the whole chaos was that Mason clearly blew his whistle to allow Dunk to take his free kick and then blew it again while the ball was in flight.
What was the ball supposed to do?

The VAR decision was that the second whistle was blown just before the ball had crossed the line.
I mean, how stupid was that. How many times is the referee allowed to blow his whistle??

I just saw this, Christ Lee Mason should be punished for that. Why did he blow his whistle if they weren’t supposed to take it?

Honestly referees are ruining football.
