When I think of some of the dross we’ve seen in this league over the years I can’t imagine how bad the 99.9% who don’t make it are.

Only 180 will make it?
So the same 180 play every season, forever?

I played against Andy Cole’s son once. He was on City’s books at the time. Honestly, he was shit. One of my mates who was working in Tesco at the time was better than him.
He's playing in the SPL, first choice striker. What level are you and your Tesco mate playing at?

I've played with Eric Dier's younger brothers. The youngest was ridiculously good.

I've also played with the Kuwaiti national team goal keeper and winger (this is back in 2012/2013). Both were really good, but I felt the gap between me and them wasn't as big.

How would it compare in other sports?

How many of the people who play basketball in America make it to the NBA?

I've played at school with guys who played in 3rd division in Poland. They were very good. I also played a few times in our neighborhood with a guy who made it into top division and played for Brescia in Italy for a while (as well as a number of lower division Greek teams). He looked impossibly good playing against us.

Anyone who makes it into top 4 divisions in England is likely very talented.

Good for him. Maybe he improved?

I was just making the point that a professional footballer wasn’t as good as a guy who played football as a hobby for fun, which is kind of mad.

I went to college with a kid who was ridiculously good, like unreal on the ball, he got signed by Rochdale & never did anything. It’s weird who makes it & who doesn’t.

The best player I played with as a kid, and who was a lot than better than me failed to make it at Stockport County. He went to FC United when they first started and played quite a lot for them.

I played with/against a few players who went on to be Premier League players and some who were in youth teams but never made it. It’s difficult to say just how much better they were. Everything was just so easy for them.

I used to play with a guy that failed to make it through Coventry City’s academy in the early 2000’s. He was miles better than anyone else on our team. He was short though, when they released him a lot of us in our group thought it was because of his lack of physicality moreso than anything else.

Played professionally/semi professionally until 21 but there’s just that line that if you cross it you’ve ‘made it’ so many fall just short for one reason or another.

Honestly couldn’t say Welbeck, Walcott, Rose, and some other PL players I played against were so much better at the time.

I remember playing in a PL under 16 tournament based at the Stadium of Light in Sunderland. They had Richard Keys, Andy Gray and Alan Shearer at the launch. Was really good to be fair. Everton won the tournament and their no10 won player of the tournament. He was unreal, funnily enough I was in the same Everton academy with him from 6-10 years of age. He later disagreed with Moyes over a haircut and after playing in Scotland just fizzled out. Still makes me laugh at how he didn’t make it. Just shows it’s about taking your chances at the right time I guess!!

I used to play 5-a-side indoor football with Emile Heskey's older brother when I was like 14. He was really good, but then again, I was 14 and he was about 28 back then

I don’t think it’s the same 1.5m people forever.
Of course not, but if you don't make it one year, as a young player, you can train hard and give it a go the next one.
Didn't read other than the headline, but the numbers aren't static. Or how to say it.

Deese Kasinga competed so hard that he turned yellow.
Can see why he didn't make it, that electrical energy field around him is probably against the laws of the game.

I also ride my bike everyday yet I will never participate in the Tour de France.

So now I wonder, why bother?

Am I the only one that read the headline and thought "well duh"?
No, not really. Was thinking how many who like singing go on to be famous pop stars etc. Hardly any too. It's not unique to football or whatever.

If you think about it’s mad someone would pay you £350 a week to play football never mind £350k...

On a more serious note it is probably going to be pretty tough to be so close to making it and then 1 injury taking it all away from you. A shame for the lad, nice to see he's back playing and he seems to be pretty positive.

You'd be surprised at how those "dross" are much much better than the average amateur footballer.

There must be 1000’s of people out there that would have been good enough but never were picked up at a young age or got into academy’s I know that for any players I played with that went across the water there was about 20-30 I considered better than them. But then you get to 16-17 and life gets in the way girls, work, drinking so on.
