Pogba or McT - for me I’d play McT you know what your getting week in week out. With Pogba its a higher ceiling but also a much lower floor. Can’t understand the hate for Scott he gives 110% every time he plays. Never hides. Utd teams of the past 30 years have always had a version of McT in them.
Jesus Christ. This is what’s wrong with our fan base. You lot would rather a Kevin Nolan over a Ronaldinho because he slides on his knees & kisses the badge. Being passionate & running hard is like the coleslaw & cheese with your dinner. If you don’t have the actual main course (ability) where is the point?

Fine. You think Pogba is a box to box player like the other guy.

I dont. I think he plays more as a deep lying playmaker during his whole United career with his passing than someone who plays like Vidal for example who has great tenacity.

Fair enough though, if he is box to box then so he is to you.

I can see why people think Scott is better at that whilst Pogba is better at providing us passing tempo and creativity to our play which he cant do when he runs around everywhere like a box to box.
Box to box means you have to be good on the ball. You’re collecting the ball off the centre backs & also charging at goal. Pogba is far far superior to Scott. How are we even having this conversation? Scott can’t pass for crying out loud. He’s not good defensively either he just fouls a lot which makes people think he’s good defensively. He’s a good physical presence & offer a decent goal threat. He strikes the ball well too. Y’all need to stop acting like this guy is Gerrard I swear. He’s a decent squad player.

I don’t even think Scott is bad but by god is he overrated on here. He works hard & has solid decent midtable ability.

That's a false equivalence - Mctominay offers more to us than Nolan would, and Pogba's nowhere near Ronaldoinho. I'm a fan of Pogba unlike a lot on this forum, but the comparison is closer than you make out.

A fully fit, 2015 Pogba is no question ahead, but the one we have currently is injured often, and physically isn't the same as he once was. It's why he can't play DM for us - he constantly gives the ball away there. He's more an AM for me - bags of on the ball ability but not that much on the defensive side. It's where we've preferred to play him this season (alongside as a wide player occasionally).

Mctominay's passing is a bit 50/50, but he's far better than Pogba as a DM or a box to box. Tackles really well, provides great cover to the defence, can run with the ball, fairly press resistant, and relatively injury free - all things Pogba's struggled with as of late. He also can finish well and gets goals. So of course Pogba is the more gifted player, can score, make great assists, beat a man in the final third, - but Mctominay has qualities that suit better to playing as the DM or box to box.

McTominay is just so average. The issue is that I could name quite a lot of midfielders in the Premier League that could do exactly the same job. That just isn't good enough for Manchester United. He may have a good shot and can skip around a player every so often, but so can many other midfielders in the league that play for lower teams. Those alone do not make a good midfielder.

He lacks the passing, isn't particularly good defensively and is being covered for by Fred, poor at positioning, and very clumsy. He has been lucky on numerous occasions where his passes to the opposition have bounced off them and come straight back to him. I just don't see the excitement with him. Even Scotland don't play him in midfield.

Mcsauce is not good enough to start but is a good squad player. His passing isn’t good enough yet but it can be developed
Im not sure his passing will ever reach the required standard. He has come on leaps and bounds though

He did miss about two years of development as an academy player through injuries, so I do feel he’ll be more of a late bloomer. Even though Jose threw him under the bus by playing him as a CB he was quite open on his admiration of him, Ole seems to rely on him. There’s definitely something about him. I don’t think at his current level he is good enough to be a starter for a side with aspirations to challenge for the prem, but the way he’s progressed markedly year on year gives me confidence.

Just so average. Him and Fred are never gonna let us compete against City or Liverpool for the title. If we want to take the next step, we need midfielders who can pass the ball forward consistently so I really hope that's the first area we focus on in the summer. I can't believe some of you lot are ok with watching us have 0 control against any top sides because we essentially have a midtable midfield...

Yeah, once in a while he'll have a worldie like against Leeds and Southampton at home, but the majority of the games he plays he's just so mediocre. It is literally painful to watch Bruno having to drop deep in midfield because these guys can't string 2 passes in a row without having to go backwards

He actually played quite well today and sprayed some really good passes. Was I the only one cracking up when he initially tried to claim the goal? :D

Looks a bit lost in games like this, him and Fred found it tough but stuck at it and there aren’t any other options at the moment.

Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time
was it only me noticed that he hides most of the match and lot of teammates doesnt believe him with the ball
He regularly does it. Some games are worse than others, but there's a reason every one of our other midfielders get on the ball at least 20% more than he does. He has a bad habit of jogging around behind an opposition player which makes it almost impossible to pass to him.

Scott did make a few good long balls out to the left attacking players but otherwise he was very average today. Shame as he'd been playing fairly well recently.

I, honest to God, wish this kid could pass. He's a trier but he's just not good enough. So often takes the ball, runs then overruns it. Clumsy. So often sees a pass on and then ducks responsibility for it. His only use is harrying people. Yes, every so often he bangs in a long shot but so did Tom Huddlestone and that didn't make him United quality. I give McTominay credit for pressuring Dawson on our goal. However, he was and is levels below the kind of midfielder we need in games like this.

While his creativity needs sharpening, he more and more gets involved in goals. At times quite handy trait to have in CM.

Off the ball him and Fred did well against Rice, Souchek and Noble, on the ball he tries but I think he plays like he knows he's not got the passing game in him.

He's a solid PL player. Never going to be a PL winning CM. If he's a squad player for us nobody can be that upset. However the fact he plays every game just shows why we aren't quite ready to go for the league.

Fred is the same. A trier but not good enough on the ball.

By far the weakest link in midfield again. If we swapped him for Mark Noble we wouldn't see any difference, I'd bet we would be better off in fact. He offers absolutely nothing going forward, his passing is too slow and he's hardly getting into the box what was supposed to be one of his better traits, he's just there to make up the numbers you would think, and his lack of intelligence defensively will cost us really - It's just Fred one man show oftentimes. Shame VdB is out, this would be the time to give him a chance. Sums up our "title" chances when another option is Matic :-( But people just accept mediocrity after years of despair and rate "hard work" over anything really.

He’s a back up squad player, if we want to win a league he needs upgrading.

I think some of you underestimate him. His game has progressed from last season.it’s like listening to fans talking about Fletcher again

Without question his game has gotten better. He's become a threat from outside of the box and his passing has gotten better but its still not up to par and this game was an example of it imo.

I think the hiding in tight spaces is because he doesn’t trust himself fully to retain the ball in tight spaces. .
He wants space to run into and receive the ball closer to goal.
He’s a box to box midfielder being played as cdm and doing it fairly good anyway.
The potential is there to be seen and the added goal threat this season is very promising.
That hard longball to Rashford was beautiful too but short passing isn’t his strongest part.

It depends on what Scott we're talking about. He started the season a bit above average, then had a poor 5-6 weeks, played well for about a month, and had another poor one today.

If he consistently performs like he did for that good month then that'd be great and it brings hope that he will continue improving further. If he played like he did in his poor period then he's nowhere near good enough. Overall he's somewhere in the middle where he's probably in our best midfield currently (either beside Fred, or one of those two partnering Pogba depending on the opposition) but it's not good enough going forward.

Just the same cr*p.

The baby fans that cant find happiness without winning a title start pointing and picking apart the good players in the squad - acting like we need to upgrade on players rather than just buying players with different skills in to our squad because we have clear and obvious space.

A very solid player that has a physical presence in the way he plays without coming out too technically weak like Fellaini.

Yeah 100% these points.

I do respect posters like MadDogg, I can see the objectivity in their posts, but some of the other stuff I read on here...

For what it’s worth last night wasn’t his most blistering performance, I thought in moments he looked a little leggy or even injured, but generally he was quite good.

97% pass completion, including some wonderful long balls, and most importantly we absolutely dominated the game. Scott’s little flick from the corner arguably made the goal.

The progress the guy has made is outstanding and I think he’s playing reliably well. Not turning games like Luke Shaw or Bruno but he can do that in the odd game here and there we’ve all seen it... but right now I think he’s dropping 7/10’s. His passing is a lot better than it was at the beginning of the season.

Yesterday i was discussing with someone in one of the threads and they were claiming McTominay is a player to help us dominate the world of football in the next few seasons, and he's one of our best players overall this season, Top 2 I believe in fact. That's how deluded this forum is on this guy.

'McSauce' as he's called. Average at best and needs to be replaced, he's squad material, if even that.
First of all, I didnt say McTominay is the reason we will dominate.. I listed out 8 players under the age of 25 who can potentially help us dominate the PL, not world football like you claim.

Can you stop putting narratives that suit you?

First team or squad material, he will help the team right? Just because he isnt the best CDM in the world means he isnt good enough?

I agree that's he's overrated but I disagree that he needs replacing.
If he improves a bit defensively, with his physicality and stamina, he can become a very good squad player. He will always pass it sideways, he's very limited in that regard. But it's not the end of the world if the other players around him are more capable with the ball.

I don't look at the posts in this thread and across the forum and come to the conclusion United fans overrate him.

He's not that young to be still talking about technical development. At his age, most of our other midfielders were fairly accomplished.

Who knows maybe it can happen, but I doubt it.

Holy shit, Scott is the most overrated player in the squad, the same goes for Fred. You all make him out like he's Pirlo or something like this. Good squad players but not first team material. If we want to challenge for titles, Mcfred should be benched.

If it comes to Fred or Scott, I would prefer Scott over Fred because of his end products that can get us goal out from nothing.

Be that as it may, both have been fantastic servants and up there with the squad players we have had over the years. They have been asked to play a lot of football in the last 18 months in many games Pogba has been injured and even some where he has been deliberately chosen to play another role. They have gone to the Etihad, Anfield, Stade de France and done us proud.

I agree that some get carried away with them, and when he’s been injured for a while, it often takes about 10 minutes of a Pogba return to see a clear difference in quality, but generally speaking - they have done as well as can be expected and held it together when we had nobody else too. It’s too important an area of the pitch to get away with lower quality over a longer period I feel, and we need better, but there’s a place for them to do what they do.
