He plays testimonial football. I don’t understand how a 31 year old with few injury problems throughout his career can be like this. The whole team just falls back with him and his midfield partner looks lost.
Well put. We always end up getting deeper and deeper as the game goes on when he plays. He rarely turns over possession and starts attacks either. He just an extra body in defence which is shite when you are trying to be the dominant team. His legs have been gone since the season before last. 3 year deal. Nice work all round.

Mentioned this in the post match thread, but playing him these days against real technical players just exposes him.

I think he's only 33, but Carrick at 36 and Giggs at 40 never looked this bad.

If he had any self respect he'd retire,

The first midfielder I’ve seen run whilst staring at his centre back so he can always pass it to him. Might as well put him at centre back so he can be as close to Maguire as possible.

Moves like he's 80 years old and completely lost his man for their goal. Always the common denominator when we play embarrassingly bad against mediocre teams. I hope he gets his dream return to Benfica soon.

So, do people still think his legs are gone? 180' in 4 days, one of the best players on the pitch each game.
As I said previously, there are more games than not when it looks like his legs are gone and players can bypass him
It puts his midfield partner in trouble

Why do I have this horrible feeling that Ole is literally pleading with him to stay on for another year because he hasn't the foggiest who we should sign that could provide the mobility and quality on the ball as well we need

Don't mind Matic against lower tier opponents, but against decent-ish midfielders he struggles a lot. Kessie ran rings around him yesterday, Nemanja is too immobile to stand his ground against him.

Not saying he's trash or anything, but whenever he plays, we play like shit.

To be fair both of those had a lot more talent to fall back on compared to Matic.
I'm not talking about the talent as much, rather his movement and physically, he just looks so much older than his age suggests.

Kessie from Milan. Looked amazing last night
This is the truth, there's so many of our overpaid players that could be replaced at a reasonable cost with good scouting

They don't have to be world beaters, they just have to be better than what they are replacing.

He's not terrible but he doesn't contribute in any particular way. Going forwards, defensively, game control. Just become a nothing player.

Relative to his height he's also one of the worst headers of a ball I've seen for us.

He's had better performances for us recently. He looked okay when we played more compact in the 2nd half. He plays like an old man and we should treat him as such. He's a back up in a position where youngsters don't typically do well. Should give Garner and Hannibal a chance before Matic's contract runs out. As is currently we need a DM, but if one of those youngsters step up, we won't need 2.

He can't play every fifth game. He needs to have rhythm and be in the heart of the team every week. He lacks timing and he will never get it back if he doesn't play every week, and he isn't good enough to play every week anymore. We need to sell him in the summer because 1) I think he wants to go this time (he nearly left before he signed a new deal) and 2) he doesn't contribute as a squad player anymore.

How I wish we were in a position for him to do a Neville against WBA in 2011 but sadly that's not possible

Who actually benefited from us giving Matic a new four year deal, besides Matic and his dependents of course?

You can, maybe, make an argument that it allowed Jimmy Garner to go out on loan and get experience. However, would Garner have played as badly as Matic has if we gave Matic's minutes to Garner?

Matic has been a busted flush for ages. He had a decent first dozen games during lockdown, after months off. He quickly reverted to being rubbish once regular football was required of him. He just doesn't have the legs anymore. How we haven't moved him on for an adequate replacement is beyond me?

Literally a training cone these days bit like Maguire can be at times, only difference is he didn't cost a record fee.

He moves like the Titanic after it sank, the way he was stranded on the Tielemans goal someone should check the bottom of his boots for a Sideshow Collectibles logo.

What happened to him? Last season he was so good and now he's become a liability. Would get rid of him this season, but of course he's just got a new contract

This was fecking awful. Might as well have put on the Leicester shirt. Terrible passing and let their player run as he pleases in the second goal.

If you want an idea of how well we're run as a club, Matic has managed to play 27 times for us this season.

He's done at this level. Unless the 2nd leg v Granada becomes a dead rubber he should not be starting another game again this season.

He was awful for a while before that. Ole seemed to get a tune out of him forna few months but hes back to being as bad as ever now. He is impossible to play with for the other midfielders.

Was there some talk of Matic and Benfica? Might be a good one to follow up, if true. The Portuguese league may suit him better.

Should be first out of the door if that means focusing the minds on getting a proper holding midfielder. He’s done at the very highest level.

That’s the second worst Matic performance I’ve ever seen. He was horrendous. Definitely coming to the end of his top level playing career. Awesome player back in the day but past it now.

We need a DM in the summer but the cheaper option will be to continue with him and Fred

He really hasn’t got the legs for these kinds of games. He gets left for dust so easily
