The champions this year may not even reach 80 points. That points to mismanagement of PSG and a drop off rather than a rise in quality of the league.
Not a very logical conclusion to draw.

I agree. I would have agreed with the notion that Ligue 1 has become better had the French sides been doing well in CL/EL. As it stands, none of the teams reached even last 16 of either competition bar PSG

Why? Its not a team or two rising up, its PSG dropping down. They won 22 out of 27 games last season before it was cancelled, Marseille were second with the same points per game ratio (1point less) than Lille at the monent, who are top.
What else can it be?

It could be that everyone else is improved :)

Can mods shut every thread about other managers, this is just mental, not being able to mention names of other managers without some special nutcases see it as some attack on Ole. Not to mention idiotic jump the gun posts in CL first part threads, we all know how that ended -.-
Agreed it’s beyond a joke now. If someone wants to setup an ‘Ole versus Poch’ thread that’s fine but it’s mental that you have to Wade through posters who seem so offended that he was in the running for the United job.

This thread is for Poch at PSG.

It's both, PSG have declined while a couple of teams have improved. Lyon and Monaco gained more points per game than the last years 3rd and 4th teams, they also directly took points from PSG. In fact Lens and Marseille also have more points per game than Lyon had last year.

Whats more likely though? Its not as if a side has risen up to them and judging by previous points tallies, they havent.
I don't know.
And obviously you're right, PSG had the shortest (rather nonexistent) break of all European top teams, no preseason, they must be negatively affected already based on that (and I guess their shakey start reflected that). I mean I know too well that we, Bayern, are clearly weaker than last season partly due to these reasons, too.

But you have to give some credit to the other teams challenging. I don't know how good Lyon are this season, but when we faced them in August they were excellent. Lille have a very good team. Monaco beat PSG twice with very strong performances. There's quality in that league, contrary to what some posters in this thread claim.

The table quite clearly shows Lille, Lyon and Monaco significantly improved their points totals from last season

Lille have the same points per game as second place Marseille had when the league finished. Even 3rd place last year is just 3 points behind the 3rd placed team this season
How is that a rise in quality? Its factually not. Its a continuation, its just PSG has completley fallen away by managerial incompetence and given lesser sides more points. If PSG performed as well as last season, the 2 tables would look like mirror images of each other. PSG being shit has extra points flooding the market.

Last season ended prematurely IIRC
It did yes, so you would expect all those teams to better their 'points total' eventually

But Lille still had 13 points more this season after the 28 match days wich was last season's total number of games.
And Lyon I think had a last season similar to ours, started terribly, changed manager, finished strongly (in the CL). They had far less points last season and are surely improved on the whole.

I don't see the purpose of comparing with a freak season. The year before, Lille and Lyon were more 'normal', as was PSG, finishing with 91 points.

Yes because Lille can amass so much more points because PSG gave it to them by being shit even though Lillle can only take 6 from PSG. Makes so much sense

Think @cyberman's point would be that while the field of challengers has changed, the level of points of the teams challenging hasn't risen.

It's not quite correct of course, as both other teams (to PSG) making up the top 3 had 6 points more this season, than last, after 28 match days.

All youre doing is replacing Lille with Marseille. Thats it. Its not a rise in quality, its one team replacing the points total of another while the former drops. I could easily point to Rennes and Marseille and say the standard has dropped because the 2nd and 3rd placed teams have fallen away. See how that doesnt make sense?
And yes, the slight rise in Lilles points total can be equated to losing 6 points to PSG last year and getting 4 points off a poorly managed PSG this year. That accounts for the vast majority of their points per game improvement.

Spurs bigger club than PSG? Don’t get it twisted please. Even before PSG was bankrolled by the Qataris, they have always been bigger than Spurs. How many times have Spurs featured in the champions league compared to PSG? Spurs is not bigger than PSG, sugar daddy or no sugar daddy.
I don't even know where to start.

Firstly, PSG are a better side than spurs currently and have been for a while. Nobody is arguing that.

But to become a bigger club is a completely different thing.

Timelines alone dictate that. PSG were only formed in 1970 for a start. Tottenham were only the second team ever to win the English double 9 years before that. And contrary to how it's been neglected today, that was a huge deal back then. Spurs are also the first British club to win a European trophy. Which is a fact that gets overlooked because Celtic and United won back to back European Cups in '67 & '68 respectively.

Whilst PSG were in their infancy, Spurs were adding 2 UEFA Cups to their history. Now, this is where the distinction gets confusing in many fans eyes.

PSG were competitive in Europe winning honours themselves in the mid nineties in the form of the cup winners cup on '95, which remains their last European honour.

Spurs have gone a stupidly long time without a trophy, but so did PSG at least in the terms of the French title.

Basically, PSG, can claim enough history to be a big club, but they are in absolutely no way bigger than Spurs at this moment. Spurs have done far more for the history of the game. They were one of the big six that lobbied the football league and encouraged all other first division clubs to resign and form the Premier league. Without that happening, does the champions league get bastadised (sorry only in my opinion, the more older footage I watch the more I miss the European cup) the way it did?

Incidentally, they've appeared in one final each in modern times.

So, do you really want to debate this with a professional commentator?

He was unlucky, who saw the game they totally dominated and bad finishing cost them. Could have been different if they played the game again. Still think they will win it easily..

I’d be silly to go against a professional commentator head to head regarding matters that have to do with historical facts and their relevance to the game today. However mine is just an opinion that I believe so strongly.

I think PSG are a bigger club in this moment mainly because Spurs have not been out of the center stage for a protracted period. My point would stand if we compared Nottingham Forest with PSG.

Again this is my opinion.

I don't know about always but PSG were one of the main continental clubs in the 90s. They were semi finalist in European competition five years in a row between 1992 and 1997. Perennial bottlers though.

Firstly, I was worried about my post and my joke at the end as I kept thinking it made me sound a right dick. Thankfully you knew what I meant

Actually, I see PSG as a far bigger club than Forest, but then I see Benfica as a bigger club than all 3 so your opinion does have merits.

I think that I'm more of a traditionalist when it comes to football. I personally dislike almost everything PSG stand for. That doesn't have any bearing on my opinion though, I still think once they have won the champions league (Although, like City, I'm convinced it won't happen) they then state a claim to be a bigger club.

Although I do have access to research and things like that, I base that from my own opinion and my understanding of the game. It doesn't mean I can't be wrong, trust me!

Not for or against Poch but this was a big achievement tonight, obviously moreso if he sees the job through next week.

There is just no way Poch can be credited for this result. They were absolutely battered, if Ole played like this you'd all crucify him.

Amazing tactical gameplan by Pochettino. Nullified Bayern at home and certainly created one of psg fans best night in football today.

As I stated many times, Pochettino is in the top two managers in football right now. He keeps making his naysayers eat crow time and time again. 3 goals away at Bayern(best team in football) is an unbelievable accomplishment.

I trust PSG more than I do Bayern to beat City. Play like today on the counter at the Etihad and I'd expect a straightforward PSG win.
