Ole outers will literally stoop to levels I never thought possible.

Bailly doesn't get picked regularly because he's about as reliable as a chocolate teapot. Doesn't matter who the manager is that guy is damaged goods.

Hopefully we can offload him back to Villarreal as part of a deal to sign Pau Torres.

Allegedly the favouritism to lindelof is a running joke in the dressing room. Bailly isn't alone in this. Ole has form for ignoring performances in training and in matches to pick his favourites.
The "favouritism" of picking a guy who is actually fit 95% of the season? As opposed to consistently breaking down every 3 games minimum?

Ledley King Syndrome.

Many convinced he’s some great player and he’s never fit to prove them other wise - how will we ever know?
Ledly King was different though, as he generally played the games, and well. But never trained.

Had to check Wiki to make sure I wasn’t going mad - King played 268 club games in 13 years. I agree that he didn’t train but he also didn’t play many matches.

Ole just said Bailly has covid so that will rule him out for at least 3 weeks.

This makes sense. Already for a few games, I saw them wearing the masks when the coaches are in dugout area, and the players warm up by the field.

He’s better than Lindelof but yes, far too injury-prone. Ole definitely tends towards players than aren’t made of glass.
It´s hard to compare. We´ve never seen Bailly playing week in and week out and Lindelöf is a steady defender.

If he´s no injured from playing football, he´s in a car crash or gets covid. What a year.

If he leaves, and I'm not against that as talented as he is, we really need to be looking for a replacement with his qualities in my opinion. I really don't want another Maguire or Lindelof type because I don't want either of them to be sold if we buy a new starting centre half. Injuries really showed today how weak our bench is at times so we need to be building a squad. Bringing in someone 'to replace Lindelof' should definitely not mean that we sell Lindelof. We had Evans when we had Rio and Vidic ad he proved vital at times.

However what we need is variety and that means finding a good replacement that has the same style as Jones or Bailly but isn't made of paper. In fact come to think of it we have Tuanzebe, Bailly and Jones who are all missing a lot of the time through injury. Get one quick, aggressive centre half who can stay fit and promote Mengi for the cup games and we will already have better centre back options next year.

I like Bailly and think he's the best centre half at the club at this best but we really can't afford to have another Jones situation by being too patient.

Edit: meant to say get rid of Jones, Tuanzebe and Bailly and buy one player who is the type that I mentioned. We'd honestly be better off if that guy can stay fit and Mengi plays the cup games.

You can’t see Bailly playing week in and week out ‘cause he can’t stay fit for more than 3 games in a row.
The guy is severely overrated on redcafe, it’s almost funny.

Don´t know if he is overrated. Maybe he would have been brilliant if he had play 15 games in a row. We will never know.

Nah. He is quick, but he always has a stupid red card in him. Also tends to risk way too much in dangerous positions. This season it worked most of the time he was featured. But overall I recall some truly disastrous performances from Bailly.
Nowhere near as good and reliable as Maguire, definitely won’t miss him much.
People rate Bailly because he is “exciting” to watch in terms of doing some crazy skill/trick against attackers in our box.. And as I mentioned, he is quick.
Maguire is the far better player, but internet turned him into a meme and this clouds people’s ability to judge him properly.

All my favourite Bailly moments are “circus tricks”, like unnecessary dribbling etc. Has he ever been part of a big victory? Like the 2-0 win vs City the other week or PSG away?

Played an absolute blinder at home to Liverpool in 2017/18, despite scoring an own goal.

He's a bit thick, isn't he? You can't be invested with match time alongside Harry when you're as injury prone as he is. Victor will be the automatic choice to build a partnership next to Harry due to reliability. Any shred of IQ would have helped him figure that one out.

Ledley King was a fantastic centre back & a very intelligent one who was extremely unlucky with injuries. Bailly is a clumsy mad man. They are very very different.

Hasn’t Maguire played more games for us than Bailly in 3 less years? Crazy if true can’t remember where I saw it.

Yes he has but Bailly is way funnier on Instagram so there is that.

Bailly has become a bit of a joke figure at our club, and we already have too many of them.

Bought young with potential to improve - he's never kicked on.

He has all the right tools and ability to become a truly great CB but after all this time, it's hard to see it happening here. If fit - he's our best CB by some distance for me

He has been fit for the longest period in his utd career this season and he hasnt had the run of games we would like to see or more importantly, he needs.

He's obviously injury prone and thats something that may change, but unlikely.

If i was Bailly - i'd want out. I'd need a change of environment and more assurance from the manager i was a starter. Maybe different training methods etc will help his injuries. i'm sure we've worked tirelessly behind the scenes trying to get him fit but his injuries have hampered him to the point where he is a burden rather than an asset. We have way too many players not offering anything - Bailly, Jones, Lingard, Mata, Matic, Tuanzebe, Williams

If i was fit and watching Lindelof start game after game after game i'd want to leave too mind. Guys not very good at all

Decent enough player but cannot be relied upon to stay fit from one week to the next.

Doesn't seem to learn how to take care or himself either and still plays in his idiotic kamikaze style.

Eric "He's Our Best Defender" Bailly. The number of times he's called "our best CB" is inversely proportional to the number of games he plays for us, I've noticed. If he slipped on a banana peel and fell down a flight of stairs, suffering an injury that kept him out for a year, I bet the number of fans calling him "the world's greatest ever CB" would be in the millions, possibly even billions.

Get rid. He’s really good at times, but he’s been here for five years and played fewer games than Maguire, who has been here for less than two. That is absolutely appalling.

Move him on for a respectable fee and bring in somebody more reliable to replace him.

The mad thing is with Bailly is that even of the 100 games he's been fit, I reckon only 50% of those (I'm being generous) was I not watching through my fingers waiting for him to do something wreckless. Very seldomly I've watched him and been massively impressed.

Massively overrated, madcap injury prone defender of the Marcos Rojo variety.

agree, the subsequent overrating of him is perplexing.

there are lots of people on here who still state he’s “our best defender”.

At his peak, Bailly is probably our best defender. I love him. The problem is, he can't stay fit for long enough to consistently perform at that level.

United as a club have had to learn some harsh lessons in recent years about carrying highly-paid passengers who either can't maintain their fitness, can't find form, or don't care (Jones, Sanchez, Schweinsteiger, Di Maria, etc.) and I think ultimately this, added to the current economic climate will result in Eric leaving the club.

Of course he is our best defender. How many games he missed? Well, every game he missed, he, if played, would do much better that Harry or Victor. So that game would have been won and don't forget a clean sheet. So missing 100 games he is 100 times better than Harry, Victor, and I believe he is at least 27,5% better than Rio and Vida. Combined.

The lad is injury prone. Just can not be relied upon when needed. If he gets a run of games he may prove his doubters wrong, however, a run of games is a pipe dream at this point. Get rid.

I think a lot of of people rate their centre backs purely on pace and last ditch tackles, ignoring the reasons they need to rely on such things.

Hope he doesn't sign a new contract and goes in the summer.

It doesn't matter how good he is, and for the record I think he's alright, his fitness record is diabolical. A player who is fit for about 20 games a season wanting first team assurances is laughable.

He needs to go. Ole will never get a new CB as long as our injured player like Jones and Bailly still get there paycheck.
When Bailly is playing regularly he is god and in this few moments I rate him higher then Lideköf, but that hardly never happens.
He makes to big mistakes and to often, after coming back from the bench/injury for my liking as well.
But it is funny to see him doing a slowmotion cruyff turn as the last man. And I can't remember him losing the ball doing it.

Over dramatizing my words much?

You cant deny that when fit, he is a very capable defender. He has much better attributes than both Maguire and Lindelof, But yes, he;s rarely fit. Read all of my post before critiquing one sentence which you've made an absolute meal out of

I don't see how he's ever been our best defender or that close. The hallmark of a top defender is consistency. It's not eye catching moments. Bailly provides quite a lot of the latter, for good and for bad, and not very much of the former due to decision making and injury proneness. He also has a weakness in the air, how can you be a top defender in the PL with that weakness..it is simply incompatible with the idea. It is the same reason Lindelof will just be a good player, he makes too many mistakes against crosses and set pieces that are costly.

Not to say he isn't a decent player or that he doesn't have potential that has yet to be realised. Unfortunately it's looking less and less likely that it is going to be with us. I would support his sale for these reasons, as there has to be somebody we can nurture in a backup role that will be available when needed.

I think we need to be careful enough with players like this. We all want change and we all want to get to the next level as fast as possible. Spending our money wisely would be a huge start. We’ve sold quite a few players that would still be first team players/squad players here recently and either haven’t replaced them or havent replaced them with players with much more quality. Herrera, Evans, M Keane, Depay, Jesse on loan, Di Maria, Lukaku and even Zlatan and Dalot would all still have value here with our squad the way it currently is. Pogba is also half way out the door. It’s all well and good moving on players that don’t fit or don’t want to be here but when the club is so slow or ineffective replacing these players it can often be a case of two steps forward and one back. We do currently have way too many players on big money who provide next to nothing in return but Bailly when fit is one of our top 3 centre backs. There aren’t many cheap players out there who are much better, fit more often yes but better probably not.

The problem is by qualifying any statements on Bailly with "when fit" the following analysis will have to ignore one of the key attributes for any defence - partnerships and consistency. The reality is fitness is an attribute for any defender, even more so than most positions. It may even be more important than things like pace because if that pace can only be used on the treadmill, what is the practical benefit to the football club? It becomes theoretical and individualistic, and therefore a comparison between players that is more like something that would be done on a game than grounded in the real world.

Also, is Bailly better in the air than Maguire? Is he better on the ball? Does he organise those around him better? There seems to be quite a few areas that are important to our defenders that no definitive statement can be made with respect to Bailly and his attributes in comparison to Maguire. I don't see how the statement can be made that he has "much" better attributes in their totality. He has a few better attributes, yes.

As usual, attributes are somehow equal to attributes like speed and aggressiveness. More important attributes such as the abilities to read the game, positioning, close down space, cooperation in a partnership, etc are seldom mentioned when we talk about talent or how good a defender is.

Exactly. When people describe Bailly they describe him by a handful of cherry picked attributes and claim that he compliment the other CB better. This is forgetting that the most important skill to compliment another CB is not speed, but the ability to work in a partnership, to be able to know what the partner is about to do, and to do what the partner expects you to.
