I think we need to be careful enough with players like this. We all want change and we all want to get to the next level as fast as possible. Spending our money wisely would be a huge start. We’ve sold quite a few players that would still be first team players/squad players here recently and either haven’t replaced them or havent replaced them with players with much more quality. Herrera, Evans, M Keane, Depay, Jesse on loan, Di Maria, Lukaku and even Zlatan and Dalot would all still have value here with our squad the way it currently is. Pogba is also half way out the door. It’s all well and good moving on players that don’t fit or don’t want to be here but when the club is so slow or ineffective replacing these players it can often be a case of two steps forward and one back. We do currently have way too many players on big money who provide next to nothing in return but Bailly when fit is one of our top 3 centre backs. There aren’t many cheap players out there who are much better, fit more often yes but better probably not.
Yeah agree. At the end of the day though he’s impossible to plan around as a first team player, due to the fact his body is made of paper-mache.

That said we still have a use for him to call on him for rotation and injury to other players, so he has a use even if limited. It’s about spending wisely as you mentioned.

For these very reasons Smalling would still be a United player if it were down to me. As good as Bailly and better in the air (but injured a lot this season.)

Funny thread. Most fans are right, hes useless as never fit and not that great when he does play.

would love him to stay fit and play 15 games in a row just so everyone can see he is mediocre.

dont belive he is this world class centre half if he can get fit.

I actually forgot to put Mike Smalling on the list! He’s definitely another one. We get panicked thinking we need to sell these guys and that we are going to reinvest in someone miles better and it actually rarely turns out like that in practice. I think if it’s a signing just for squad depth we are as well off to just keep one or two of the fringe lads who’ve shown they can do a job but their value may have fallen due to injuries or not being able to get into the team as often as they would like. In the meantime use the transfer money to sign better quality players on the cusp of making it.

Real quality and depth is only achieved when current starters are pushed down the pecking order and are fighting to get their places back. We already have half a squad just picking up a paycheque for training/on loan these days. We could surely turn all that into 2 starting players and we wouldn’t miss a beat? I think if players are getting a game for us at all then leave them as the last to go (except Matic, he’d still look slow in Italy :wenger: )

It's his injury record rather than his rashness that has held him back. He just can't stay fit long enough to cement himself.

I'd say he's somewhere in the middle. Mediocre is harsh. He's definitely not world class either. But it's academic as one of the most important qualities in a CB is to be fit most of the time, in order to build a strong partnership with your other CB and understanding with the defensive unit as a whole.

It's like that old quote misattributed to Napoleon, about asking of a general not 'is he skilful?' but 'is he lucky?' Ask of a CB not 'is he good?' but 'is he ever actually available?'

yeah. Pretty much any summary of his abilities or function within our side is hypothetical

Love his personality, and has some incredible performances in him. Alas, if we can't rely on his fitness then he will never be of great use for us if we are serious about mounting challenges. Imagine we were still in the title race now and we don't have a high calibre player for the run-in. If they aren't injury prone, then it's just unlucky. Shame on us if we decide to put faith in someone with as terrible of a fitness record as he does.

When he can last 90 minutes he's a courageous defender who is a great athlete. He's pretty average in the air, rash and reckless too often, and his numerous injuries have interrupted his development, having come here quite young. IMV he's a good player but completely unreliable. Some on here get too swept up by the novelty of seeing a central defender who actually loves to defend, and neglect his shortcomings because he's got pace, next to the slow Maguire.

If he's actually wanting out it is a blessing. I'd much rather we be forced into the market to buy a central defender, than dithering and extending his deal. Hopefully Tuanzebe will still prove himself here though. We'll definitely need four central defenders (and we don't count Jones).

The best CBs at the club since Vidic and Rio moved on have been Smalling and Maguire. Lindelof and Blind behind them. Then the rest. Bailly hasn't done enough good to outweigh the bad throughout his time here.

Let him go.

He cannot be relied upon.

People talk about Maguire's transfer fee, but look at Bailly. 30 million for 100 appearances in 5 years. Maguire has already eclipsed that amount of appearances in less than 2 years.

I liked Blind as he was a smart player and though he was not quick he rarely got caught out.

You better start looking for other solutions then. Don't let the door hit you on the way out sunshine, because that would rule you out until next year.

Wow. Another tap in presents itself for the moneymen at United. He's giving up more chances than normal.

Its a shame Jose went to a club that probably wont pay a decent fee.. a decent bid and we should accept it.

We should cash in on him. He is a good player but we cannot have an unreliable CB.

He wants to play weekly, he can barely even play 3 games without getting injured, prove your fitness first lad.

Jose and Moyes trying their hardest to repair their reputations by buying our players - good on them.

I think if Roma want him we'll get a good price, Roma have been taken over and promised Jose money to spend. If we get 30m or close it'll be good business

Be glad to see the back of him, would be surprised if we even get a third of the £30m we wasted on him back.

"I don’t want to be a starter one game and a substitute for another five"

And we don't want you playing 3 games and then keeping Jones company for the next 3 months. Sadly, reality doesn't respect both our wishes.

Win win - if the new contract means we get £20-30m for him then happy days.

Tuanzebe and Mengi are more than capable of filling in for the 3 games a season he'd be fit for and we can put the money towards a proper defender.

Agent Mourinho to start clearing out all of our deadwood? Any chance he would want Matic and Phil Jones as well?

I'd terminate his new contract straight away.

F$@k him, he should never have got it in the first place.

Wow, are those words somehow taken out of context? Surely no one can be that daft to upset the team morale on eve of the final. Maybe Ole told him he was sub for the final.

If the quotes aren't complete journalistic misrepresentation then he can just bugger off. Lindelöf, Maguire, Tuanzebe and Fish for the final match day squad. Don't care even if they have to roll Maguire out in a wheelchair.
