James Garner will be in United's first team squad next season, no doubt at all.

Does some good spinny spins in the lower leagues to beat opponents. There's a few miles between being good in the lower leagues to commanding the midfield of a title contender.

He has CERTAINLY improved a lot since last season, so there's promise there.

Well I do highly doubt that. It wouldn't be a good idea to sit on our bench for a season at this point in his development.
Unless we sell Pogba and Matic and don't buy any replacements.

Garner couldn't get into the Watford squad earlier on in the season, have some patience.
He was till they changed managers. Hence the move to forest which is paying off incredibly. Id agree that another year on loan would be better. I'd keep him at forest, they play him to his strengths and he shines there. What better place to gain more first team experience. Send him back for a full season there then integrate him the year after.

Ive not watched him. You think he’s good enough/ ready? What do Forest fans think of him?
They love him. Begging for him to come back but also feel it's unlikely as he's too good for a championship bottom half or relegation battle.

I think he could do with 1 more loan, still at forest to guarantee game time, if not, at a better championship club or lower prem club before joining up with the squad with more experience under his belt.

He's showing very good signs like awareness, passing, and quick thinking but most of the users react to some youtube highlights of his best moments. Of course he'll look good.
I'd be more interested in a detailed opinion from someone that actually watched full games since he moved there.

Nobody played the same role as Fred, because when you have Carrick you dont need it. Same thing with Garner
Except plenty of players played the Fred role? Phil Jones, John O'Shea, Fletcher, Park Ji Sung, and the list goes on and on... but the most obvious example being Keane (similar in role not quality) next to Scholes. Why are you talking shit?

I've watched 3 full games since he's moved to Forest. He's been easily their best player on the ball, physically looks very capable and seems to have good positional sense. The one negative I've noticed when he's been playing is that he doesn't get on the ball as much as I'd like him to. I've seen situations where his partner is coming under pressure from a couple of players but he doesn't move towards the ball and create a passing option.

He looks a fantastic talent in my eyes, delicious first touch, great press resistance and an excellent passing range but it's difficult to tell whether he's ready or not because whoever plays his role will be expected to dictate the tempo and I'm not sure he's capable of imposing himself on games enough yet to do that.

Is this lad going to turn into my dream DM or what? Haven’t seen anything of him on loan, in the very limited first team appearances he had for us I wasn’t particularly impressed but that’s harsh in such a small snapshot of performances and the pressure that comes with it.

Would be brilliant if he becomes first team quality in that DM role. We still need to strengthen there this summer imo regardless.

Garner - if he continues at this rate - should definitely be bedded into the first team or sent to a PL club for a year (Brighton et al).

His potential to address our progression in the defensive to midfield thirds to the final third is incredible.
He can take the ball on the half-turn from defenders - watch his performances so far for Nottingham - and pick the best decisions to progress the ball.

1 2s
round the corners
tight spaces
runners into the final thirds
through the lines.

I'm very optimistic. Good lad

Well said. He needs another season out on loan, it's doing him no harm at Forest so another season there would be great.

Talk of him going to Norwich, Brighton (if we get Bissouma) etc, I'd be more inclined to leave him at Forest where he's settled and starting to flourish.

I love Garner but your assessment is nonsense until we see him vs Premier league players. I genuinely hope he can reach his potential.

You are also vastly underrating McTominay. I get it, I believe there are better out there but I love the boy and think he adds a lot to this squad. Its interesting you compare him to Fletcher, considering Scott has scored more goals this season than Darren ever did in any campaign. Season isn't even over!
It is certainly not a nonsense, Garner is very well rounded player already, a classic MUFC midfielder if you asked me, the question is wheather he can transform it into top flight, and so far he seems to be taking the step we wanted him to make. One more season and he's ready. McTominay has done extremely well compared to how extremely limited he is. Fletcher as a lazy comaprison on this forum, possibly because they are Scotish and started underrated in the first team. One reached absolute top as a DM/CM in the league/ in Europe second has done ever so well to be selected by manager but is nothing but an average player who more he's a fringe player the sooner we'll move back to the every best team in the country or the world. He's a player when he moves on will play in one of the lower half teams and won't be much noticed. But yeah he's done well and added some goals but for a player who can't defend it's not exactly great return if we take the offensive involvement is his best contribution.

Options next season:

1. Get him another loan at Forest. He's won his spot, he'll play loads of football, he's still young enough that just playing senior football is an education.
2. Get him a loan with a Championship title-contender. Introduce that pressure of having to win almost every game which he can expect at United.
3. Get him a loan at a lower PL team. See if he can hack football at the top level with an eye on bringing him home the season after.
4. Keep him at United. Won't get much game time but Matic's minutes could probably come his way and training and travelling with the first team will be an education.

Personally I vote option 2.
He's already bossing it at Forest, a year is a long time to cruise when he should be constantly challenged to improve rapidly. A bottom-half PL team can be a torrid environment; managers drop like flies, good football goes out the window, the odds are very much against it working out. And while there is value to training with our first team, I'd say he's still too young to not be playing as regularly as possible. 2 is a good balance of all the options. Championship managers will have seen how well he's done for Forest and it will improve his odds of getting a proper bite of the apple even with a stronger club.

he’s forming into a very similar player like Carrick, but he’s got a better shot.

I do think we’d be smart getting him around the squad next year, then if pogba does move on he’d be a ready made replacement.

Also seems better at getting into attacking positions for the shot. While obvioiusly at his age and experience we can expect him not to be as good with his defensive positioning but that will come.

younger carrick used to be more mobile and got forward more also, but obviously as he got older and slowed down became more of a sitter - garner will probably be like that too although have the shooting threat from the edge of the box.

He reminds me the most of Kroos in style, if he can be even half the player he is we’ve got a player.

Yeah I can see that with his long passes. Kroos always had that ability to just sit back and ping a ball out to any player in space

A full season at Forest would be a bit depressing with all due respect to them. It's apparent that he's got enough at that level, just give the kid a tougher challenge if possible to see how he deals with it.

There's a risk involved compared to staying there, but if United is the final destination he can't spend too long in the comfort zone, playing for a mid-low table team in the Championship.

In any case I'd take whatever he decides to do, but I'd like to see a step forward this summer. For United it's still early in my opinion.

Would a midfield trio of Garner-Pogba-Bruno work?
We can only speculate but I think it would be too lightweight. Pogba tends to anarchy and it could be difficult for Garner to cover for him. Pogba would have to sacrifice part of his game to make it work, but who knows.

I'd be more interested on seeing Garner-Fred (or Scott), if it looks balanced enough and the ball progresses as it should, so maybe we can have a "Pogba alternative" in the squad when he isn't available. Maybe we can see both 'experiments' in pre-season before his future is decided.

Limited player but playing well. Brilliant analysis.

Sounds great, if he’s anywhere near as good as Carrick that would be awesome.

We desperately need a top DM imo.

Just remember there are several players from the last few seasons that were playing well in the championship and then took it to the premier league. Maddison and Buendia at Norwich, Bowen, Watkins and Bamford in the past year, Grealish and Barnes before that.

We wont know what his level will be in the premier league until he's given the chance.

Yeah I think he has outgrown Forest a bit. A top Championship club would be good.
