We've got absolutely trashed there, and rightly so — Mackay (I should've made his compilation as well) was outstanding, Greaves was equally great and generally that Spurs team was so resilient, aggressive and comfortable on the ball.

So, Jimmy Greaves stars as an inside forward, making 2 assists (and a few great passes, one was simply a genius one, a through-ball with an outside of his foot, that should've ended with a goal as well) and scoring a goal that reminded me of Kaka vs us in 2007, he went through entire United defense like a hot knife through butter.

@Šjor Bepo, I think you've said somewhere that you haven't seen him play well in actual games — you should give this one a watch.

hmm doubt it, think it was someone else as i think i watched maybe 2 games of Greaves and IIRC he was pretty decent in it(made a compilation for him as well). One thing i know i said is that in both games i watched he didnt play as a striker as he is used in drafts, in both games it was a SS role and from your post, once again he didnt play up top but will give it a watch :)

Couldn't we make the same case for Law too? Didn't he always play inside forward/ SS behind David Herd?

Yeah, most of the time. He didn’t like to play as a goalscorer/number 9 and was quite vocal about it, but Shankly/Busby still put him there :)

And how did he fare when he had to play there, compared to the deeper role? (Mainly thinking of how to judge him in draft games.)

Oh, absolutely fantastic, although he still tried to get involved as much as possible, I’d imagine that he’s had quite a few talks with his managers about it

He has absolutely everything that you’d want from a striker, but he simply wanted to do what Di Stéfano did and, to be fair to him, he did it brilliantly.

Cheers. Would you say Greaves fits that kind of CF role too? The question came up in a PM discussion recently, Sjor has mentioned it above.

I often ask myself where a specific historical forward would fit into a stereotypical 4-3-3 of today - roaming CF, wide forward, attacking CM. (There are of course other forward roles in today's football, thinking of Griezmann and Cristiano, but it's a useful reference.)

(And sorry for interrogating you )

I think that a lot of those players would be number 9's today — in those days they were usually the best (or one of the best) ball-playing specialists on the pitch and the general quality of the teams was significantly lower, so it didn't make sense to isolate them in a purely attacking role. Especially in England where there's a tradition of playing a big and strong targetman up front anyway.

Today, with an emphasis in possession and an improved bottom level of their teammates, they would probably be strikers who have an option of dropping deeper & interchange with wingers/midfielders depending on the situation. The difference between Griezmann and, say, Law and Greaves, is that he doesn't have the required qualities to play up front, unless it's a clear false 9 role — and they did. Cristiano is a bit of an odd ball as he's such a unique case — he certainly could play as a traditional centre forward but even in his oldest interpretation of his role he still prefers to roam around a bit too much to be a reference point up front.

Charlton gliding through the pitch is such a sight
And yet another thunderous goal, his shooting really was something else.

Lovely stuff. Great feet, balance and vision. Joins an exclusive group of players to take set-pieces with both feet too. Some ball near the end there from Mackay.

50 years old. At least 2 decades older than any other player on the pitch. It's also surreal to see Pelé playing alongside Cafu (best player on the pitch that night, ahead of the likes of van Basten/Enzo/Stoichkov/Hagi/Careca etc.), being managed by Paulo Roberto Falcão

Great footage. Looks like quite an intense game too. Pele still has a great touch, you wouldn't easily guess he was so much older.

Milking a trending cow. I'll upload Platini's performance as well, it was a fantastic duel between to all-time great number 10s — Laudrup tried to show that he's up for the challenge after moving to Juve a couple of months prior, Platini tried to defeat his stature as Juve's and, well, the world's best player. Michael was very decisive, scoring 2 goals and playing a part in the third one before getting subbed off due to an injury; Michel was more involved in the build-up and was pretty much untouchable — and, as usually, often popped up in the box, scoring a goal and coming close on couple of other occasions.

God i love this guy
Exactly my type of player. You can tell much more about a player on their bad day then you can when he is at his absolute best and here you have Ribery in a CL final, having a rough day and even if you disregard his brilliant plays in both goals he had a good game because his movement was fantastic, his workrate and discipline was insane so team benefited so much even tough he was having a rough day in possession.
Also reminded myself how good was that final, one of the best i watched.

Not his greatest performance but nonetheless, it's pretty much Fernandinho's wet dream
Funnily enough after Fenomeno and maybe Pep he was the star performer. Got fecked by a modern ref.

To all van Hanegem aficionados @Joga Bonito @Pat_Mustard (if I'm not mistaken) etc.

The man could do everything... except for running. Maguire would've probably beaten him in a 100m race.

We should have a classic players sub forum as well outside the realm of draft games where oldies and retired players and teams can be discussed. RAWK has one I think.

These videos deserve a larger audience. Maybe I am usually one of the first ones to watch the videos, but the view count is so low.

Yeah, unless you hit a jackpot with an algorithm which happens from time to time...

Not sure if there’s enough interest for an entire sub forum though :(

Will be doing a bit longer series on Roberto Carlos, after catching few of his performances(like this one) while watching someone else i get a feeling he is overrated as feck so why not go a bit deeper and check. Will be picking random big games usually so this isnt a fair start from that point of view as i knew in advance he struggled. Figo was doing whatever he wanted but his final ball was a bit poor. Dont think anyone sees him as a great defender so maybe this isnt a surprise but his offensive game was almost non existent. Only few times he went up there, think he had one decent cross for Mijatovic and one overlap to create space for a teammate.

no doubt, another game another great free kick goal from Hierro.....cant defend but boy can he shoot:lol:
Was he really that bad at defending? I always remembered him being pretty astute but just slow. A bit like Blanc.

Its an odd one, you can see him have a great game against Fenomeno but then week after some scrub will wipe the floor with him. If we call Ramos/Koeman/Pique and similar players "bad" defenders then i feel Hierro belongs to that group. Under the all-time glass i feel its justified.

He also moved to CB regularly later on in his career when he was a lot slower, which affects perceptions relative to what his peak level would have been at CB.

Most of the games i watch him is are from the mid to late 90s which has him in late 20s, stepping to the 30s so pretty much best years for a centerback.
