I really don’t think he’s a good manager, he’s just too much stick and not enough carrot. He really has trouble keeping his rage in check and managers have to be savvy in dealing with players, staff and boards

However, I do believe he will have a good chance to be successful at Celtic if he goes there because the level of Scottish football is currently low (not to be disrespectful, I’m speaking in relative terms) and I think he is enamoured of that club. They will give him a decent shot if they take him on.

He really only has to beat Gerrard’s Rangers, which is doable. Maybe Gerrard could even move on shortly......
As a Man United and Rangers fan, I really hope Keane doesn't join Celtic. It's conflicting enough cheering on a Liverpool legend at Rangers without hoping a United legend fails at Celtic.

That said - I do agree that if Keane is to succeed anywhere as a manager, then it's probably at a big club like Celtic in a smaller league like the SPL. He demands his players to deliver success and be winners - that's not easy at clubs like Ipswich and Sunderland unless they're in the championship going for promotion. But in the PL they're going to be fighting relegation, which wouldn't satisfy him.

He's not going to get jobs at huge clubs near the top of the PL, La Liga, etc - so it's going to be much easier for Keane to get the type of winners he demands at a club like Celtic. Though I can't see him staying long at any club. I think his management style would be too abrasive like Mourinho's and, even if he has success at a club, he'd soon alienate too many people and would end up having to leave.

Was Keane done at this stage? I was still fairly young and distracted by youth stuff as suposed to being all about united ins and outs

He went to Celtic and then retired?

If we disregard how the moving on of Keane happened was it the right move, never thought about it before so just wondering from people who were more invested at the time
He kind of was but his last full season (04-05) was actually a very good one in terms of influence as a metronome passer and defensive mid. His peak was 96-2002 though.

I did a comparison of Fred's stats from last year and compared him to Keane's stats from that 04-05 season and Fred came second best (or 4th best as I included Carrick and Herrera in there too). I wasn't intentionally dissing Fred who I think is a decent player but we've had some midfielder who have operated at a higher level, including a 'past it' Keano.

I’m glad Ole chose Roy for this current team because that tells me he knows there is a real lack of leadership in the team, it’s severely lacking.

Oh and Roy was a complete baller as well of course. :D
I think anyone who played in that era or remembers it through anything other than rose tinted glasses would pick Keane. He was the most influential player in that side by a significant margin.

Yes I agree totally re his abrasive style. He’s never going to be at any one club for too long but short term success with Celtic is definitely possible and that would be good for him

Yeah totally agree. I just want to believe that Ole chose him because he acknowledges the lack of character/leaders in the squad. :)

I'd like to see Roy Keane give management another but I don't think he will get the Celtic job. I feel as though his cards are marked (fairly or not) when it comes to his man management skills.

Man Utd and Rangers? Bertie, old boy, your cognitive dissonance shouldn't just be limited to concerns about wee Stevie and Keano. Jeeves might be able to save you from all manner of ghastly Aunts but even he can't solve that conundrum.

Growing up, I had relatives on either side of the family who supported one or other of the teams and took me to a few games so I ended up supporting both - but always with United as my main team.

It does seem to put me in the minority on here. :)

Would be interesting.

Keane has never had a managerial job where he’s been expected to win.

just looked it up, and his last managerial position was a decade ago!

can’t see this ending in anything other than tears if he goes there.

What does this mean for Keanes managerial career? Let's say he is successful at Celtic, where does he go after that? I don't think it would necessarily put him in the mix for another big club.

Being a manager is hard and most managers are ruthless,

"Hounding every blade of grass, competing as if he would rather die of exhaustion than lose, he inspired all around him....."
fergies comment on keane....

Fergie did keane an injustice and all players who were around their peak post 99, he did not strengthen it where it needed to be, signed poor and butchered that team when rebuilding.... Keano sacrificed everything for that man and man utd, in the end fergie cut him loose like he never knew him and like keane never did anything for him when his powers had waned.
Can see where keane is coming from, and on the flip side I can see fergies view.

2 legends. just leave it as that.

Yea it's talked about quite a bit in the 2 vids I posted not long ago. And in contrast to the proud stubborn nature of the two men Viera says I'm sure he still loves u on the inside.
And when asked about that quote I laughed because he said it offended him that's his job classic Keane.

I would love to see Keane get a job where he can actually win trophies.
I think he deserves it and it would be interesting to see how it goes.

There is no way the Celtic board would gamble on Keane - they will appoint a yes man to make sure too many waves are not made.

I can also see both sides. It’s understandable that Keane felt cheated after being cut loose unceremoniously from the club after years and years of sterling service.

But if you read Fergie’s autobiography (the later one, which is much more forthright and candid than ‘Managing my life’), he makes no bones about the fact that football management is about ‘power and control.’

Keane had overstepped the mark numerous times (e.g. by slagging off teammates on MUTV, a complete no-no) and he wasn’t good enough any longer to even partly justify his craziness. I think they could have handled his exit better, but he had to go. It’s almost like Goodfellas at that level

The infamous Battle of Old Trafford with Vieira getting sent off, Ruud missing that penalty and the handbags at the end of the match.

Keane was United's best player and one of the best players on the pitch with his composure and finesse on the ball helping United gain the upper hand in the engine room. Just a shame Ruud missed that penalty though...

I know its not fair but that was probably when i started to dislike Ruud a little at united. Anyone can miss a penalty i know but that one was just so vital and would have stopped Arsenal from going unbeaten and the whole invincibles thing.

Harsh but true i just blamed him for being the reason we were too predictable and i could Arsenal were gonna win the title

Love the Keane and Vieria battles. Thanks for the vid.

Never felt we were ever outclassed by the Invincibles unlike their 98 team. The reverse fixture later in the season was 1-1 and Keane and United were pretty good for a point in that game too. Ruud missed a good headed opportunity in the last few minutes and Arsenal missed an easy goal after that too.

The 1-0 semi final we were battered for ten minutes but then I felt we were the better team.

Funny that. I remember Henry scoring from distance past Roy Carroll and thinking well, they're just so much better than us that it's no surprise. 03/04 at Highbury.

Keane's right, but they'll probably win today and everyone will go on like Spurs are 2011 Barca.
Keane’s normally not a million miles away from the truth in a lot of what he says. He just sees everything in absolutes, so often a lot of what he says is going to rile people up.

That said part of me wouldn’t be against seeing Jose’s shit eating grin at full time if they hump us again.

Keane's right but Spurs should be doing better now. Under Pochettino they were guaranteed top 4 each season. Gareth Bale has become the new Luke Shaw, you just know that if there was any other manager there other than Jose, Bale would more than likely be making a huge impact most games.

Yeah I re-watched that game recently, I think that in a tight game we were probably just about the stronger team but I don't think we had any players that could score that Henry goal. Our midfield seemed on top most of the time.

It's worth remembering, the Invincibles (03-05) never actually beat us in a competitive game unless you count the penalty shoot-out win. You would think they'd have had at least one great performance against us other than a charity shield win.

Unbelievably harsh comments on Fred. We’re watching the lad play an excellent part in the build-up to the goal he scored, and Keane said “I even expected him to miss that”.

Well he nearly missed it
