Signings like this scare me. I can only think of Van Persie who has worked for us, when signing a player at his, or older, for so much money!

I am convinced he would be a big hit here IF he really left but still feels very Ramos in 2015 at the moment, have wanted to sign him since the summer of 2011 when it looked like he may sign then instead of Jones

He's not a great CB. Might be better than Lindelof I suppose.

Not believing it. If the club know there is nothing concrete in these rumours, we need to start using these links to our advantage or outright denying our interest. Seems common place to throw United's name around from players at the bigger European clubs. Ramos and Muller come to mind.

That being said, he would be an ideal partner for Harry, just Injury concerns with him these days, I'd settle for a little less in quality if it mean sustainability.

On the contrary, I have a sinking suspicion that Varane will be our ‘one marquee signing’ this summer and we will have to watch distraught as Haaland and Sancho go elsewhere and Kane signs a lifetime contract at Spurs!

OK, the one thing that makes this even slightly believable (not that he would like to join, but Madrid selling) is them having no money and wanting the current star player in the world this summer.

A year left on his deal. Has there been any sort of a figure bandied about (I promise I'm not getting suckered in).

Hmmm

If he is our only addition, then happy days. Hes a world class CB. I imagine him added to this team may be enough to take us to the next level. We can score but we are inconsistent at defending!

This always happens. The rumour first emerges and we're all like nah, no fecking chance. Then after a few weeks of being worn down with stories in the press a few of us crack and start to believe. Then finally in the latter stages as most muppets start to get on board and BAM! New 5 year contract. Thanks for playing.

 ...and even if that deal somehow gets completed, our luck with R.Madrid players is just cursed.

Madrid reportedly asking in excess of £60m - sorry but they can feck off. Half that would be about all right for someone unproven in the PL.

I honestly think Lindelof is good enough and the more he and Maguire play together the better he looks (better, in fact, for me, than Maguire). I know nothing about the Serbian at Fiorentina so I'd stay as we are and give Will Fish a chance to prove himself as a back-up if Bailly leaves or gets injured sneezing and is out for another 17 years!

£30m because he's unproven in the PL but a WC and multiple CL winner?

Fish isn't ready for a backup role, he's going to need a loan for a season at least before he's considered, look at Tuanzebe.

Bailly is likely to leave as he's one year left on his deal and not willing to sign a new one according to the press. So to lose Bailly, having Tuanzebe and Fish as back up would be naive of us if we're going to attempt to challenge next season.

We need a new cb, we’re woefully short. None of the young lads are ready

The old give the completely unknown Man Utd kid a chance theory  now it's Fish's time when a week ago most people hadn't even heard of him.
Exactly. Fans just throw the young ones names around because they recently read an article about them. The only one ready is Tuanzebe and he’s injury prone, as is Bailly and Jones. Hence we need a new cb with lindelof struggling with his back too.

This has to be a wind up? Varane at 27(prime CB years) has literally won EVERYTHING there is to win at top level and Madrid are desperate to have him as their next captain. Achievements aside he's easily a top 10 CB in the world ability wise £50-60m is a very reasonable fee if he had more years left on his deal we'd be looking at a figure close to £100m. Preferring perrenial plan Bs and a youth player to a bonafide world class CB is like preferring to eat raw intensities over a medium rare steak. Awful awful opinion

It's terribly hard to find elite CBs in the market. Varane is one of them and he is still young for such an experienced player. If Florentino lets him leave he could be making a very big mistake.

I don't trust buying from RM. Either he's cooked, or it's a big shit-play from RM to distract us from Pau Torres so they can nab him and leave us without either.

It's times like these I prefer guys like zorc and the bayern guys. They come out and say that's b.s.

Get Alaba on a free, add 60m from united to the let's get Mbappe warchest. Would he do something like that?

I'd love to sign Varane - pretty much brings everything we need for our new CB.

However I don't believe it'll happen. I'm immune by now to the links to what seems 100+ players every window, and especially to the Madrid ones during contract negotiations. I just take 99% of them with a pinch of salt.

If it happens, brilliant. He's probably the #1 CB target we should have. If it doesn't happen, I won't be in the least bit surprised.

The problem is Ramos is allegedly leaving, so it's not a good idea to substitute 2 elite CBs who are extraordinary in the air with one very good CB in Alaba, who is not so good in the air.

Why are people saying he is too old to play for us when he is younger than Harry Maguire?

This guy would be the dream partner for Maguire wouldn't he.

How many players leave Madrid in their peak years though?

At 28 he's in his prime and if we want to improve the position, we need a player with experience and quality.

Maybe he's just after a new contract but I suspect United would pay more than Madrid, if we think he fulfils a need. Perhaps his last big contract so maybe he wants to cash in.
