If anything, both Guardiola's City and Klopp's Liverpool were and are often VERY underrated here. I lost my count of how many times I saw bullshit being said downplaying the quality of the football of those teams and, specially, their players.
They're really, really not.

What? One loss and this discourse comes? I can't see Guardiola quitting City anytime soon, where would he go? He has never felt more comfortable at club and turned this season around, which had started badly.

Guardiola's City and Klopp's Liverpool are undoubtedly one of the all-time great teams in England. They are at least better and more dominant than Mourinho's Chelsea and Wenger's Arsenal. Only Ferguson's United circa 2007-2009 can match them.
Jesus wept, what’s it like looking at football purely through the eyes of statistics. These posts are everything wrong with modern football fans.

City's defense is much better than Bayern's and has often been truly incredible and rock-solid this season. Also, City rested a lot of starters against Leeds and Chelsea.

They can get hurt a lot by Mbappé and Neymar regardless of what they do, Mbappé and Neymar are that good, simple.

I don't like how so many people here seem to treat high line as purely a liability and suicidal while it actually is how modern football is played. Flick, Klopp and Guardiola, three best coaches in the world now (the latter two for years) all play with a high line and dictate that modern offensive football is played with a high line and pressure.
Problem with high line defences is that you know how to beat them so long as you get the ball in midfield and have the players to out pace the CB's. Obviously you need to get possession, however if you can do that, you have a great chance. It doesn't take a tactical genius to figure that sort of defence out.

What a load of bollocks, Wenger’s invincibles were a miles better side than current City or last season’s Liverpool, as were Mourinho’s Duff/Robben/Drogba side.

I don't normally focus too much on opposition teams, especially given how poor Utd have been over the last several years. But if City were to lose the league cup final and go out to PSG it would be very satisfying!
It would be delicious.

Of the 22 PL champions who have competed in the CL and therefore had the opportunity to win both major trophies in a season, only 4 have reached the CL final, and only 2 have won the thing.

Those 2 teams are the gold standard for modern English football. The closest would be Klopp’s CL champions in 2019, but of course they fell just short in the league. City might do it this year, at which point they can join the pantheon (albeit with an asterisk, in my opinion).

Wenger and Jose never bothered with CL football at the same time as winning the league or being "the invincibles". It would have been nice if they tried. Both of those teams were a laughing stock in Europe.

Yeah this Liverpool team have dropped the ball on what could have been a great legacy by falling off a cliff this season. You cannot ignore this kind of drop off. A goat contender team would never do such a thing.

The Chelsea team is a weird one because it’s patently obvious they never played as good a football as the Liverpool/city teams but as a United fan I’ve never felt so helpless coming up against a team than when we faced that Chelsea 04-07. You just never felt they’d ever fecking lose. They were so hard to play against and we only beat them once in nine during that period.

Bit harsh on Mourinhos Chelsea. They lost two semi finals to you guys. One on penalties and one with a non goal.

Mourinho got into the semi finals of the CL in 04/05 whilst winning the league. Probably should have made the final were in not for a dodgy Liverpool goal.
Let's not rewrite history now.

In that season alone, despite some close wins against Barcelona and Bayern, the quarterfinal teams that were considered serious contenders to win the CL were still Juventus and AC Milan. Liverpool and Chelsea just over reached themselves, that's all. It was no mark of domination by either club.

Edit: to return to normality, have a read of the refs post match comments on the Baros penalty and Cech red card. Or you can continue living in your own thoughts.

I reckon their star is fading, and fast. I can’t see Pep being there much longer; KdB is perennially injured, Fernandinho is on his last legs, Aguero is on his way out which leaves... Phil Foden as their leading light. The others are good players but they don’t give City that sense of imperiousness that the former do.
People have been saying Pep will go for the last 2 seasons but it hasn't happened yet.

Big nope from me. Mourinho's Chelsea 1.0 and Wenger's invincibles are better than Pep's City and Klopp's Liverpool for me.

To be fair to them, only one club has managed to win the Premier League and Champions League in the same season, that clubs done it twice.

Exactly. And that is the mark of great teams. If not in the same season then at least win the CL before or after winning the league. Neither Arsenal nor Jose's Chelsea sniffed it.

Yeah, the bolded part isn’t really that impressive though, I think people would argue Arsenal having an invincible season is better.

Perhaps they are destined to match our feat of 2008 although don't give Spurs a prayer next Sun right now so another version of a treble looks like it could be on the cards again

Now that they can’t officially win the real treble, I actually don’t care who wins the Mickey Mouse Cup.

It wasn't a dodgy goal. If the goal didn't stand Chelsea's keeper would have been sent off and a penalty given.

They also crashed out to Barcelona the following year.

Yeah seeing as city are looking to make it 6 in 8 years its become a redundant competition. Where city's reserves are simply far better than other PL reserves. They stroll to final most years

Well you've essentially just decided yourself that, even though they were semi-finalists, they weren't considered as contenders. Solid logic there.

Porto were contenders this season for as shit as they were. I'm sure I mentioned 'serious'.

So what are your requirements for being serious contenders? Cos apparently walking the league and reaching the CL semis isn't enough.

Bear in mind that I'm a United fan. But no need to spew nonsense to prove a point

Correct, generally it's what the rest of Europe thinks of your chances. Liverpool were considered full on favourites in two seasons under Klopp. Even though they hadn't even won the PL by then. Chelsea were never considered favourites above the likes of an excellent AC Milan or even Juventus. Arsenal, specially the invincibles, were considered a full on in-joke in Europe.

Alright so because the rest of Europe apparently didn't rate their chances of winning, even though they were in the semis, that made them the laughing stock? It's okay to say you were wrong about Chelsea mate.

I guess Liverpool are a laughing stock for not going for Europe while winning the league

Well, look at Milan's line-up: Dida, Cafu, Stam, Nesta, Maldini, Gattuso, Pirlo, Seedorf, Kaká, Shevchenko and Crespo. Also Rui Costa on the bench. The gulf in class between Milan and Liverpool was GIGANTIC. Which makes the Istambul Miracle even more impressive.

That's a calculated risk in any high defense in football history ever. From Ajax in the 70s, Milan in the late 80s, Guardiola's Barcelona and so on.

Liverpool in 2019 had 97 points in the league. That isn't falling short really, 97 points is insane and would have granted them the title in almost any other PL season. City was just too good also. Liverpool was unlucky to have to contend with Guardiola's City team, they might have two Premier Leagues in succession.

Or maybe they wouldn't have won so many games in other PL seasons.
