What is happening is genuinely heartbreaking. I am so scared for my parents right now. The level of apathy from the government is just absolutely pathetic. I have a lot of issues with Boris Johnson but when the UK was hit badly he focussed on this only & gave daily press conferences answering a lot of relatively tough questions . On the other hand the Indian prime minister is tweeting about his election rallies while my twitter timeline is full of people trying to help each other with hospital bed , oxygen and medicines.
A friend called me in tears this morning begging for an oxygen cylinder. This is beyond horrific, I've never experienced anything like this in my entire life.
The fecking PM is campaigning, fecking campaigning and the bhakts have the audacity to defend this shit. Fecking done with this country. Cant wait to feck off from here. There is barely any humanity left in these people.

To think 15/20 years back many were returning to India from abroad to the country of their birth. Now it's the exact opposite. I've not met one PIO who wants to return and are trying to sell their assets back in India without much luck. I had hopes of India becoming a superpower.

Well that seems a slightly odd to do even before you consider that there is a pandemic. I know cows are sacred to Hindu's but throwing their dung doesn't seem the obvious way to honor them?

The lack of masks and packed streets almost guarantees a huge outbreak :(

Pretty much. Me and my friends used to talk about going back.. Now I wouldn't really. The country has changed, and not for the better.

Why on earth would you want India to become a "superpower"? Its a ridiculous moniker and has no importance about from massaging some egos.

I think I remember you saying something about the possibility of 'bodies on the streets' in India, last year.

We're nearly there at the moment. Harrowing reports from all over the country, while our PM is busy campaigning in election rallies.

Read all the slides on this one for example

I read some reports earlier that fill me with dread. It is hard enough to keep it under control with small population but with a large one it is even harder especially when hospitals are overwhelmed :(

I honestly believe that even in a literal life and death situation like this, we still couldn’t come out of petty politics, we never will now. India is screwed now and will never recover. The whataboutery, the lack of leadership, the sheer apathy of political leaders and media just speaks of the moral compass of this country. It’s time to pack up and go.

It isn't just in India. Australia's Federal government have utterly stuffed up the vaccination program by treating it as a political and not a health issue.

Why there is no serious discussion and coverage about postponing the current phases of election and putting a total stop on rallies, i don't know. It was bad enough there was utter lack of social distancing in general but to further exacerbate it just flies in the face of the advice given by same folks in parallel..

PM was singing praises in a rally couple of days back saying there's people as far as he can see in all directions. They don't care basically, elections are there to be won regardless of the costs and there's no way parties would agree to a postponement given the current ruling party then gets to stay longer. There's 2 things no party wants to touch: elections & religion. There's millions currently at the "Kumbh Mela". Imagine what's going to happen when these cnuts start returning to wherever the feck them came from.

PM being the authority should not even be holding rallies. Very worried about the current state of affairs.
In Karnataka they are flipping around with half measures. Its worse as it is. Just look at other states and clamp down asap.

I genuinely believe that had BJP been in power in these election bound states, there would have been appeals to postpone the election and other parties would have agreed to it as well.

The issue for nearly every problem comes down to media and their coverage of every political event. Had BJP appealed for postponement, the media would have praised their suggestion about how they put lives before power. If say Congress or TMC appealed for this, the media would have gone, "Parties scared of Modi and impending defeat".

It isn’t just about the vaccination drive. It’s the entire ecosystem. I’m stunned that media people who used to be relatively unbiased journalists have bent over to this degree that they’re openly playing with people’s lives to please their masters. I’m stunned that majority of these BJP supporters still get into this whataboutery that we’re only in this position because Congress made India poor.

The collective common sense and moral compass of the entire country has gone for a toss. You would always run into woke people who say that we don’t give a feck about the TV or the media but it is the media who has brainwashed the citizens, even the woke ones, into thinking that Modi is the only leader we could’ve had while Rahul Gandhi is Pappu.

Congress are white collar criminals who would’ve siphoned the money out of the system but at least governed the nation with educated people in respective fields. BJP is inept, evil and a plague on the nation. They’re corrupt in every possible way and spread their corruption to every independent institution.

If as citizens, we still can’t see which the lesser evil is, then we deserve this fate.

Concerned in what way? We have effectively ceded away territory to China last year and there isn't a peep about it in the local media.
That the Chinese will be doing anything they can to prevent India from becoming as influential as they are? I don't really know, I guess I'm wondering if there is some anti-Chinese sentiment in Indian politics.

Come on guys, give the dear leader a break.

There's simply too much to do and too many people to appease for the virus to be accommodated in the BJP's timetable. There are millions of future votes to be protected by allowing the Kumbh Mela. There's political ground to be gained with the elections. The Modi stadium had to be showcased in all its glory during the recent England tour. All that takes money, and a great deal of time and Covid comes down a notch or a million in BJP's priorities.

Where's the media who incorporated the Covid story into its 24/7 toxic anti-Muslim campaign last year to demonise Muslims who invented the virus and deliberately spread it as a form of jihad? If I remember correctly Mowlana Saad was accused of manslaughter and a number of FIR's were thrown at Markaz and himself. Surely the election campaign and the Kumbh Mela organisers should see similar rage against the perpetrators and organisers of these events?

Bashing China and its policies and politics doesn't help win elections in India in the manner in which bashing Pakistan would. Therefore, even if there are concerns within the corridors of power regarding the Chinese expansion and the politics of China at a global level vis a vis India, they are not really made known to the public at large.

Politicians only care about money and power. Modi knows his cult of personality will win him votes no matter how many die on the streets. He just doesn't give a feck.

Come 2024 no one will be even talking about Corona. Hell, even Yogi won't lose UP despite this horror show.

Fadnavis getting a private supply of the drug is very fishy. Since BJP in Gujarat also got it, the factory owner must be one of theirs.

...

But overall, I'm not sure if Modi is the central figure of blame here. No state has done well. And the dynamics of the infection in India have made no sense from the start. It grew exponentially during the lockdown, continued growing after the lockdown was lifted, and then 3 months later started plateauing and dropping on its own. I know that even before the plateau/drop lots of people had given up on masks and distancing. And then it stayed very low for a few months.
Then, without a particular inciting incident, it skyrocketed, and continues to rise.
I'm not sure what policy is supposed to solve this.
Of course, Kumbh Mela does not help. Of course, campaigning, praising crowd size, does not help. And there's been mismanagement of oxygen, drugs, and vaccines, for which he should definitely take a lot of blame. Not answering CM's phone because he is at a rally, and then his chamcha cabinet defending him, is a disgrace. But the underlying trajectory of cases makes no sense.

...

Yes he is teflon, he will not get any blame. Any other PM would have been massively unpopular by now. Some people will blame CMs, others will blame the public. After demonetisation I don't think you can expect any blame to stick to him for anything.

If the data was legit from the start, it could have been better managed without the current scenes.

Literally every country which faced a second wave fared worse than they did during the second wave. Yet, the govt was chest beating throughout the past few months. And as of today, the PM and the HM are still busy campaigning while the Health Minister is clueless and the Commerce Minister is asking states to manage “demand side oxygen”.

All criticism of the Government aside, I am genuinely baffled at the "second wave", and at the severity of it. Most countries that had a second wave experienced it after they opened up - we have been opened up for months already and the numbers kept on going down which suggested that there was at least some sort of herd immunity that had developed. There was even crowd allowed in one of the cricket matches against England and no one had much of an issue with it as the caseload kept on going down. Now all of a sudden, the situation has gotten so bad that there are people dying outside hospitals as our healthcare system is stretched beyond capacity. How did this come to be? Did the natural immunity that the population had gained against the virus started tapering off over time which allowed people who were previously infected to become effective carriers again? Is this due to the mutation in the virus? Will Covid become seasonal like the flu?

So the court ordered Yogi to impose a lockdown for a week in a few cities in UP. Yogi has refused. Is that legal?

It's judicial overreach courts can advise but I don't think they can issue orders on functioning of the government unless something illegal is happening atleast that's my understanding of constitution .
Irrespective of where we all stand on political spectrum ceding executive powers to judiciary isn't the way forward .

The high court can interfere under article 226 of the constitution. The government is well within its right to not agree with the decision of the high court and the remedy available to the government is to challenge this order in the supreme court instead of telling the high court to feck off. The high court also has the power of contempt of court, it can send the cm to jail till its order is implemented unless its order is set aside by the supreme court or by itself.

Article 226 deals with issues pertaining to fundamental rights .
