If we are in PL then I would accept this new league. So mostly yes
A big problem for me would be the loss of interest in the PL (if we're still in it) rather than a lack of interest in the SL.

It's fine if we're actually competing for the title but as soon as we're not the league doesn't mean anything any more (because who cares about finishing 4th rather than 5th?). Also there's no longer a general race for CL places for me to be interested in either. At that point why would I spend my weekend watching the PL?

Even with the SL, it's not like I'm already watching every CL game as is as there are time constraints during the week. Even if the SL is perfectly entertaining sport, that shift from the main football I watch going from the weekend to mid-week is gonna see me watch less football.

I thought their website looked pretty stylish so I changed my mind. I'll be looking forward to seeing how this develops.

Also this will probably motivate the Glazers to invest a bit so we don't look like a complete joke in there.

Sorry mate but that's bollocks. That's not being a fan, it's being a sheep.
Well what do you propose then?

I'm with you if you can spearhead reversing this.

Same with how governments run countries. We don't have a say do we?

In the end they'll always do what they wanted regardless of what people want.

I ain't no sheep but to be honest there comes a point where unless you can actually make a difference it's a losing battle every time which is why I'm with you if you know a way we can actually make a difference.

Are you fecking kidding? They are literally awarding championships to murderous cnuts in the UAE and the clubs taking ownership back of their product is too far?

Seriously, a lot of you need to get a grip. UEFA and Fifa need to burn to the fecking ground and this may be the right start.

Make no mistake the premier league will kiss whoever’s arse they need to and it won’t be UEFA
Yeah, but this is like 100% of UEFA and FIFA’s bad side with zero redeeming qualities.

Or are you hoping for the old ‘it’ll get worse before it gets better’ angle when it comes to ruining everything and starting fresh?

Given this is totally 100% completely unfettered capitalism with no care for anything else morally then don’t you think it’ll be almost immediately given to those same murderous cnuts?

If money is all that matters then the worst people win.

No. I support a Man Utd that plays all sorts of teams in the competitions i grew up watching agains british teams.
European football is great if you get there. Memories like Blagging a ticket in the home end with a uni mate to watch us play birmingham at st andrews. Watch in disbelief as we are knocked out the league cup 4-0 by league one mk dons. Thats what its about. Competition and having to be competitive and surprise.

meaningless exhibition games against the same european teams every year wont mean anything. We have those pre season tournaments against ‘big teams’ all the time no one really gives a feck.

ok now this is getting absurd. love for the club and for the game can't be taken from me by a decision of few businessmen. I hated Glazer with passion for so many years, felt so powerless, all the green and gold stuff - never got close to stopping loving United.

A lot of these clubs are also affiliated with the UAE in someway, or have other dodgy relationships.

Morally they're all as bad as each other.

what redeeming quality does uefa or fifa hold? History rife with corruption.

I'm ringing tomorrow morning to cancel my membership. I'll sign anything I see that registers my disgust and I will refuse to spend money on anything that the Glazers will profit from. That mean no games, no merchandise and no Sky Sports sub until they are gone.

On my own it's feck all but if enough of us do it the impact will be felt. I feel sometimes over here we can be quite cynical about how few fecks the fans in Asia will have, and write off any movements as impossible. But I've lived in Asia and I know how passionate and serious football fans over there are. We need to be better at communicating with and engaging the fans in different countries to get real traction behind these movements.

It is baffling how this point (and I made that point myself too) has gone over some people's heads.

As if the invention of the PL is comparable. You can relegate! You can promote. None of that happens with a Super League where 15 clubs automatically play in it.

A complete disgrace.
the invention of the premier league was great. It extended the football league pyramid by 20 clubs which allowed the creation of more professional clubs. It boosted football from grass roots up. The premier league gives the football league money and bailed them out in pandemic.

the super league is about owners wanting to earn even more from their ‘assets’, absolutley nothing more.

As bad as UEFA and FIFA are, at least their tournaments have clear conditions for entry that are similar for all teams. Of course, the biggest, richest clubs are obviously still overly favoured compared to the smaller teams, but at least they have to perform over the course of the season to ensure they stay in it, or another team will grab their spot. This Super League shite is a footballing dictatorship. You're either in or you're fecked. I can't see how it's better than the current system in any way, and even if this is just the beginning of what will eventually become a like for like replacement of the CL only without the UEFA influence, I don't trust that these billionaire twats can ever create a competition that is any less corrupt than anything controlled by UEFA or FIFA.

The short story is, we'd need more than just twelve mega rich clubs primarily looking to become even richer to generate any sort of positive change that moves us away from the corruption currently permeating the sport. It needs to have support from the entirety of European football and be driven by something other than the desire to cash in. This isn't anywhere close to that in any sort of way.

I am finding sports in general much less interesting of late. It is probably because I am getting older, but I just don't get that rush of excitement anymore, regardless of the sport. I used to love watching any team play football or American football and now I can't even seem to get all that excited to watch the teams I support. Part of it is probably that there are no fans are in attendance, but I am also kind of finding myself bored watching sports and paying more attention to my computer or phone during games than I ever did.

When I have work to do I can always put any game on in the background and I am good, but I am finding that it is it tougher and tougher for it to hold my interest when it is the only thing on.

So whatever happens, I'll still watch for the time being, but I think its going to be part of a long term trend where I kind of just lose total interest eventually.
Yeah, I can empathise with that.

When I was a teen the weekend's football was quite literally the highlight of my week, something I actively looked forward to. Now it's just something that's there, among other things.

Tbh one of the main things that keeps me interested as is is the fact that it's the main thing my dad and I bond over and talk about. He won't be around in a few years though, at which point the actual entertainment provided by the football itself is gonna have to do a lot of heavy lifting. Seems like my emotional ties to the sport are gonna ebb away.

That's the thing. We have no actual power unless MANY can do the same thing. There's plenty of fans abroad who probably don't care what's going on as long as they can watch games.

Even a few thousand is just a speck of dust for a team with 500m+ fans.

Just cancelling your membership won't change anything as the big wigs know they're about to get more subscriptions from fake fans elsewhere.

Thats why I'm saying I'm not a sheep. We just don't have enough power against these greedy owners. They're doing what they're doing now for more money. I can imagine even if every fan cancels membership they actually won't care because it's TV that pays and good TV means more money.

Its crap all around but I won't stop supporting the badge. Honestly it's all a car crash man. I actually hate it.

Edit: I cant reply now as got no more messages left.

BUT either teams for this are actually greedy or they've been shafted for many years by a governing body that's worse.

Don't know what goes on behind closed doors but maybe there is more to it. Bit like ebay taking 10% fees. What if Fifa/Uefa take 70%?.... I don't know but yeah, it's interesting.

However I'm a believer of 'earn your stripes' so if teams don't belong there then it's unfair. Just to reiterate. I am not for this.

Anything that makes money in todays world will attract rich vultures. How do you think they became rich in the first place?

Its not uncommon for average players to make 20m a year in the NFL so it was honestly inevitable.

This is not about Fifa and Uefa though, its about a clear lock out of other clubs. Saying its fine that 10th place Arsenal can never miss out on Europes biggest competition because feck Uefa is ridiculous. Wanna bin Uefa and Fifa do it properly, make teams earn their spot in the ESL, not hand it to them. That won't be done though because Leicester or Napoli or Sevilla might eventually piss on a "big" clubs qualification. Imagine if the PL brought in a rule that 15 of its 20 clubs couldn't be relegated. Whats the point for the other 5, finish 1st to 5th and 3rd 4th and 5th still go down because the worse teams have immunity?
Nail on the head. And this is why I won't bother watching United if they leave the Premier League/English first division.

If ESL goes through, that won't be the extent of changes either. There will probably be 4 quarters to maximize advertising revenue, and draft picks etc. How shit.

Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal, Tottenham and Chelsea are all involved in a clandestine plot which threatens to bring an end to the Champions League, amid a bitter row between the continent's top clubs and UEFA

The clubs are annoyed that UEFA take such a huge slice of profits when it is the clubs, on the back of a crippling pandemic, who are taking all of the risk by buying the players, putting on all of the spectacular games and they are the ones selling the tickets.

Yeah, probably.

I'll mourn the passing of English football. But Manchester United will still be Manchester United.

I'd be more inclined to abandon United if we were taken over and financed by the Saudis, and they turned us into a surrogate Riyadh United (like Abu Dhabi did with City). That would break our heritage and make us a different club.

But I think I'll be able to ignore soulless business moves as long as the financing comes from from the club's own investments rather than from a sugar daddy. I won't be happy about selfish nature of it. But I'll get over it because it's unfortunately how the world works. Like a family who's a bit of a twat. Their heritage is what I would continue to have an attachment to.

Its life. It comes with ups and downs.

We are just small fans with no impact on what happens which is why we sit here and bicker.

But if I've chosen to support utd for 15 years then I won't change just because of the owners decisions.

I don't agree with what's going on but I'm not going to stop supporting. The players and staff are the same people.

We might as well say that the players should all leave the team now then.
I can think of about a billion what if statements that would make me question something if the owners decided it.

Sounds a bit like the Nuremberg defence of ‘I was only carrying out orders by my superiors’

Of course. Will root for us as I would in the CL. It's hardly as thought I've been living that tournament in recent years. Of course the SL does seem to be a bad idea for the sport, but there's no way I'm giving up football and supporting the club.

As a wise man once said

Premier League must not be disrupted. It remains the most important completion for me as a Manchester United fan. It's our bread and butter. You can play around with the European stuff but leave the league alone

I will always support United but I'll probably lose interest in the game. For me the PL has always been the competition i enjoy the most and the Super-League will make it pointless unless you are very close to the top spot.
Why can't both coincide ? This replaces the CL

So most people have a problem with the ESL but not with the corrupt FIFA and UEFA  :houllier:
I've seen this argument posted a lot and I don't really see what you're implying here. Of course we know FIFA and UEFA are corrupt and hate that it's part of our sport. But there's nothing wrong with saying that the ESL is the final straw. It takes the imbalance of power to an extreme that could bankrupt the lower teirs of football at a time when they've never been more vulnerable. We're not saying we're thrilled with what we've got, we're saying enough is enough.

I chose to support them so I don’t care what the leaders do is how he phrased it.

Wanna explain how it’s different?

Going along with something you know is wrong, just because it's easier or it's what everyone else is doing is exactly what being a sheep is. You don't only do what's right when it suits you and there are no downsides.

I disagree with your assumptions on "fake fans from abroad" but even if not one other fan agrees with me, I'm not supporting their ownership of our club any more. As far as I'm concerned, the United I supported is dead until they're gone.

Yeah dude, I'm completely disgusted at my own club, I saw us cut a deal with Uefa stood by it because our backs were to the wall and I believed despite us being shady as feck we were doing something good for football, something that prevented monopoly. Saw us then take Uefa on in court because it benefited us but I also thought maybe other clubs can get as lucky. Then we won the court case and months later decided to step on the little guy and prevent a club potentially doing what we did. I mean we won the fecking lotto at City, it could just as easily be Everton or Newcastle and then tried to stop other people from doing it, this is the most disgusted I've ever been by City (the club not its owner or past owners etc..) and while I know angry and all as I am I can never walk away I right now wish I could.

For the SL clubs the PL season would only come down to winning the league or nothing, as there's no longer any value in finishing 2nd, 3rd or 4th rather than any of the lower positions.

Once those teams know they're not going to win the league that year, they have nothing to play for. Meanwhile the more wealthy, prestigious and high-profile Super League is there to take priority.

You could easily have a situation where our interest in the league is basically over by November/December. And if not us then whichever of the big teams are already out of the title race. The competition as a whole is devalued by that.

Because you play the "biggest" tournament regardless. So if you aren't in the race to win the league it means nothing, becomes a friendly tournament.

The last 7 years we never really challenged for the title but atleast we were in a fight to qualify for the CL, every game mattered and it was exciting. Just last year it was a nailbiter to the last round. With the new system the PL will most likely be dead by round 30 almost every season. It will kill the league every year we don't challenge.

As much as some fans will be excited for United v Madrid/Juve/Milan etc, I won't because of two reasons.

1. After a while, these will become regular games, nothing special. We'll just get used to it.

2. It won't feel earned. There's something special about firstly qualifying and then making it to the semi final of the UCL and getting drawn against Barca. It's something that happens rarely and you really savour every minute of the match. That feeling will be gone.

No. If this goes ahead I'm out. Can't imagine ever supporting another big club either, so I'll try and get more interested in other sports, keep an eye on FC United... But this proposal would kill my love of United, and of the club game to be honest. It's just absolutely antithetical to everything I love about football.

I can't stop supporting Man United but arrrghhh this step is so irritating. ESL might end up as a 'quality product', better than CL perhaps but this doesn't feel right. UEFA are corrupt spineless feckers though so them getting screwed in all of this is one good thing. Feel for clubs who dream to make it through to CL and progress the club based on revenues from there if they make it. Now they may get to qualify in a year for remaining 5 places but it won't be the same as 15 clubs just stay there and make revenues, no matter how they perform.
