Are we going all in on the transfer market?

I don't think ESL has anything to do with spending this summer. We were always going to be limited in spending this year. I expect 50-60M net spend, no more. The pandemic is still on going with new variants being discovered. It would be a brave club that goes all out in the market anytime soon.

£100m transfers in, £25m transfers out; that's my bet (within 10-20% anyway).

Same here but if they spend a lot im sure it means they are digging in. I doubt we spend much at all now
In some way if we spend a lot I will be gutted as bizarre as that sounds as I just want them gone now.

Rather spend nothing fall out of the top 4 again and get rid of them than carry on under their reign.

lets say:

£35m JLingz
£60m PP
£35m DDG
£12m any one CB

Maybe a little high given covid, but more or less the outgoings I would expect.

Why would the Glazers want or need to appease the fans over the ESL fiasco?
They've never been bothered before about what the fans feel about them, as long as the money keeps rolling in.
It's their club and they can sit at home in the US and direct business from there and show up over here for a few board meetings from time to time.

They'd only want to appease the fans if it was necessary as part of a business decision, or if there's a significant, long lasting and robust boycott, once a full allocation of fans are allowed back in the stadium.
That'll be August or September at the earliest.

I agree with others that this summer's transfer activity was always going to be quite muted, not just with us but right across the board.
Like other clubs, Utd are going to be limited in what they can spend, due to the blow Covid has had on our finances.

Add in the ESL fiasco and I can't see the Glazers wanting to throw money away that could be lining their pockets instead.
Plus we've yet to see whether or not EUFA or the FA are going to punish us for being naughty?
Points deduction, European ban, transfer ban or whatever.
If any of that happens, why sanction any costly transfers, if they're not blocked in the first place?
All we can do is wait and see.

For me personally. I think we should go in hard, but not on a wide variety of players.

I don't think we should buy a centre back this year. I don't think there are many great ones around and I think ours is serviceable enough where they are not the actual issues in our team. I feel that we have three major problems:

a. our attacking tranisitions: we know how to attack with pace when we get the ball, but we usually have to get the ball deep in our half. We struggle to win the ball in the middle of the pitch or higher because none of our midfielders are great at dual task of winning the ball back and distributing it quickly to more dangerous areas of the pitch. Pogba can't win the ball back, Fred can win the ball but can't distribute it well or quickly after, Mctominay struggles with both and Matic is really slow on the ball.

b. Defensive transitions: we struggle when we lose possession high in the opposition half. This is due to our deepest midfielders not being able to position or pressure the opposition into losing the ball or moving the ball into less dangerous scenarios. None of them aside from Matic have the positioning aspect covered. Matic is too slow to make the potential recoveries if the ball happens to not be in his immediate area.

c. Our build up: This partly a tactical and personnel issue. We struggle at both passing out of a press or into midfield. When passing out of the press, none of our midfielders have the awareness to get into the right spaces or move the ball quick enough to evade the opposition. Pogba is the only one that has the technique to hold possession at times.

a. defend ( covering the defenders)
b. win back possession
c. maintain control and possession of the ball ( either by having balance/strength/agility or having the awareness to play one twos)
d. progress the ball : passing to higher areas of the pitch ( more risky passing- so has to have the skill to do that like Carrick did) or driving through dribbling to higher areas of the pitch, all with an aim of getting the ball to the attackers.

The reason we struggle at dominating some smaller games or matching a team like City is because most of our midfielders lack the ability to do more than two of these things. In a two man central midfield partnership, both partners need to be able to have all of these things covered.

Midfield should be our number one area of interest this summer, signing a player like Camavinga or Paredes who cover multiple areas of these requirements would help.

I would then spend the majority of our money completing our attack by signing either Grealish or Sancho ( with my preference being towards Grealish). Imo, he would be considered the most talented player in the England squad if he came here. The flair, creativity and balance he has is matched by very few in league history. He plays for Villa, so that skews opinion, but you can't watch him and say that in the last 20 years there's a player out there like him.

I'm going to say the opposite and say that Glazer will spend a better amount of money in a transfer window - or atleast meet one of our better past windows expenditures.

I'm not saying this because I love them or anything - but it's because

  • They have had to say Sorry to us and will be scared of pissing us off even more.
  • Woodward will leave and needs to be replaced by a new woodward alongside our new DOF who need to get off a good start
  • Ole is the closest team to a title contender this year and has the backing of the players and most fans (as seen the opposite of when the players went against Glazer co). Ole is closer to being title winning manager if he is able to buy a few ideal top players in the the areas we need.
  • Ole is actually quite good at being a manager that is able to sell players or get them off our wage book rather than giving unnecessary conteact extensions. More players will leave to help a more built transfer money amount.
  • Hopefully, if we win the Europa League or even only become runners up - it is hopefully a time Glazers tell us to utelise that money more often than most times just for trying to keep a positive environment around the club again.
The real Woodward got off to a blistering start signing fellaini

A wall of text

anyway to your first point: CB. In my opinion this is our most pressing matter. Tuanzebe, Bailly and Jones are all injury prone. Lindelof is carrying a bad back. No kids are ready for that step. That leaves maguire as the only ‘reliable’. What happens if he gets injured? I’ll tell you, what happened to Liverpool this year

I predict a lot of fans are going to be very disappointed at the end of the summer window.
It's the most predictable thing in the world, really. We have secured CL football, which is the main concern for the owners. On top of this they have the additional excuses:

"Covid-19 means that we're poor now!"
"You complained last summer, but the results still improved this season! This proves that spending is not necessary."
"You've been protesting and asking us to leave. Well, this is a preview of what life is like without the honorable Glazers!"

As much as I don't like it, it's a fairly safe bet. No-one's going to cut prices (much) for their premium assets (see the Sancho saga), but most clubs, including United, will be unwilling to pay top fees. Which means disappointment for anyone expecting marquee signings, outside of any player swaps.

I already wasn't expecting us to spend much this summer due to the losses over Covid.

I'm now expecting us to spend, if anything, even less than planned. I think there could be financial repercussions due to the SL plans - either fines from UEFA / PL, a potential ban from Europe for next season (so missing out on CL money), or the rumoured prospect of a set fine or legal action from the remaining SL clubs (well, a desperate Barca and Madrid).

Hopefully none of those happen, but, even if they don't, and we revert back to our planned summer activity, then I can't see us spending big on any players. I think, at best, we'll get one or two affordable additions (especially if Cavani leaves that has to be addressed) that won't be for 'big' money. No Varane, Sancho, Haaland, Grealish, etc. Just can't see any deals like that at all.

We’ve spent in and around 150 a season since Ole arrived.

James 20, AWB 50, Maguire 80 - 150

Bruno 60 Donny 35 Telles 10 amad 20/30?pellistri 10 - 140/150

I think it’ll just be the same again. We are getting decent return on investment recently but we need to keep going at the same rate for a while yet before we crack it. We need to pick up 2 starting quality players this summer at least.

How sad it is reading some of these comments about signings.

The dust has hardly blown over yet from yet another disgusting episode under their reign and we've already got people get excited about how much money we will spend.

Clueless. Totally clueless.

I think you are right!
I expect the opposite, they been complaining about the end of football in the SL group, its time to show the world how little money they have to spend.
And of course! the Corona have effected the possibility of spending big...

Depends on what people view as going all in. A spending spree of £150-200m is not happening. Due to sales I still expect some positions to be sorted out like a back up GK with De Gea leaving and a back up RB if we find a buyer for Dalot.
The rest however we'll be very lucky to spend over £50-60m on one player and sales will be extremely important. Haaland, Kane and Sancho are 100% not happening and with Ole's comments on how he prefers Greenwood on the RW I'm expecting a ST with Cavani leaving but a modest/unknown name for a modest fee. At CB Bailly is leaving so we'll get someone there. If Varane's contract situation blows over reckon we'll look to get him for £50-60m which we can afford regardless of the circumstances if not him Pau Torres. The sale of Lingard will be extremely key as I don't see anyone wanting Pogba

If I were in charge of United, I would try to get any signings done as quickly as possible - because the most realistic punishment we will get is a transfer ban. A fine will hit some clubs too hard in the current climate, and a point-ban is not really fair either. It will hit some clubs extremely hard (Arsenal, Spurs) and make it impossible for them to reach C.L next season - while City still have a good shot at winning the title even with a 6-10 point deduction

So the most fair punishment is probably a transfer ban. And it would sort of be a poetic justice -"you needed more money, ok - let's help you by not letting you spend more money"

I'd like to say that Glazers would be willing to spend more to save their skin but reality is they don't give a shit about their reputation and it's been in the gutter from the beginning

I can't see how this summer is going to be any different to last summer, if anything clubs should have less money to spend now
To be honest I was absolutely shocked how much clubs spent last year. It was really reckless in the circumstances.

I'm hoping clubs show a little more restraint this year and look to ensure they aren't losing money before they think of making signings.

Of course, that won't sit well with fans who want a shinney new big-name signing every week, but in a week when we are assing the state of the game I think fans need to start looking at themselves and their constant demand for shiny new signing been a large contributing factor to the problems with top-level football right now.

I fear this might end up being one of our most disappointing summers.

The club is still feeling the effects of Covid, so money would have been tight anyway.

This will be Woodward's last summer, and he has little reason to want to leave a legacy. In fact, he seems like someone who only uses the term "departing gift" in the ominous sense.

The owners won't go out of their way to spend big. They are more likely to be skint out of spite than spend to subdue the fans; a "this-is-what-you-get-for-complaining" or "we-could've-bought-so-and-so-with-that-ESL-money" if you will.

A few weeks after the window closes, there will be an interview/article blaming supporters for the lack of spending. Or maybe I'm just being too cynical.

We probably have a budget of around 50m, so we'll need to sell to buy.

With that in mind, we'll probably keep hold of Matic/Mata for one more season if possible. While selling players who can provide us with decent funds. JLingz, Jones, Bailly, if Pogba isn't going to renew then we'll need to flog him. Then a decision needs to be made with DDG and Henderson.

Would still love to sign Jack but Villa would quote us easily £100m even in this COVID market because don't need to sell

I'd still go for it for Grealish then go cheap ( with Camavinga ot Paredes) on midfield.
