As much as I like Cavani, this is terrible news. I say this because it pretty much reduces the chances of us signing a striker this summer down to 0%.

Once again the cheap option for the leeches.
We're not signing Haaland this summer, we're not signing Mbappé period. Spurs aren't selling us Kane. There aren't exactly many great options out there this summer and we're certainly better off with Cavani (and someone like Sancho can help us out, especially by forcing Greenwood centrally). It's good news.

It would be good news because there are no great strikers available right now.

I know most people here have no love for Martial but I don't see how he can have another season like this one. Cavani, Martial, and Greenwood are all good options for at least another year.

This is brilliant news. What a player, still in incredible shape and lines up perfectly with Haaland's release clause. Not sure Haaland will choose us but it lines us up for us to have a real run at him.

As long as Cavani is in top physical shape, he is world class or at least still on the cusp of it. If only his body wasn't about as reliable as Bailly, he'd be over 20 goals by now even with Martial having been given the majority of the early season to flop.

Incidentally, like Bailly, Cavani's injuries directly result from a physically demanding style of play.

I'd love to have him for another season. You could hardly ask for a greater mentor for Greenwood (and Martial if he's willing). Better to have a top class squad player who will naturally be rotated with youngsters giving them the opportunity to get game time and experience. We have more urgent areas to bolster.

Here’s hoping a decent Utd crowd getting behind him motivates him to stay. I imagine his past 7-8 months have been pretty weird. Arrive in a foreign country in COVID times, can’t go anywhere, don’t speak the language, play to empty stadiums, family not with him in England apparently? It doesn’t surprise me that he wants to be back in South America.

Despite his age, lack of match fitness and limited integration time, he looks the best CF at our club.

For me, that's the only thing that matters. It's of course an indictment of our squad building and to be honest, Martial, but it is what it is.

There's no obvious CF upgrade that is clearly better than Cavani right now available at low cost. So let's see where we are in another year.

Reports seem to be leaning towards Cavani leaving, which is a damn shame. If it was a normal year with supporters at stadiums, I’m certain he would have considered staying another year. We’ll have a huge hole to fill with very limited funds to spread around. I’m sure the message we’ll soon start hearing is that the club expects Martial to bounce back and reclaim the no. 9 spot.

His goals per 90 is actually phenomenal. He would be a 15+ goal striker as a first teamer for someone else in the league. Always going to be rotation at United. The boy has done well

When you said phenomenal I expected the number to be higher.

It's a good news if he stays another year means we can concentrate on other positions to improve. This season we show we are not far from having squad to challenge the major trophies, losing Cavani means we need minimum to find someone around his level or above in attack to match the current level which not easy at the moment.

He seems to have a great relationship with Greenwood. Its a shame he might be leaving, Rashford and Greenwood play much better with him on the field.

I thought the he'd look a lot more engaged and fired up these past couple of games. Kind of made me think that he'd end up staying.
Maybe that's the extra motivation - not that I've found it lacking at all, he's head and shoulders above the rest (bar Bruno) - knowing this is his adieu to European football and he wants to end on a high note, dragging this team forward.

Completely understand his reasons for wanting to go back home though.

Bailly would pull something scratching his arse. Bailly has managed over 30 games twice. Other than that he's barely played 20 games in a season.

Before this last season Cavani played 35+ games a year for 12 seasons. In 8 of those he played over 40 games and 50 three times.

Stoked if the reports about him extending are true. Just focusing on his goal record so far with us is doing him a massive disservice, or you haven't watched him much because he contributes so much more than that both in link up play and in defense as well.

Personally I'm in two minds about him staying. I think he's shown that we benefit from having a real penalty box striker in the team, that's for sure. However my worry is that if we keep Cavani, then the position becomes less of a priority than it would otherwise be. I like Cavani, but I really don't want to go into another season with the same striker situation as this one. If we could keep Cavani and get a new striker that'd be awesome, but I don't think that's likely.

Id be willing to bet if Cavani goes we will be looking at cheap options once again. Ronaldo (cheap fee) Ings contract running down etc. My fear is we keep spinning the wheel with older or cheaper placeholders and the likes of Kane or Haaland will move and we are majorly tied up in a short term Ronaldo fix. It might be good for one more season but is that really the most efficient way to run things?

The club won’t make the type of investment needed this summer to get either Haaland or Kane. Ronaldo would be a great short term option and likely at a reasonable fee. If Ole ultimately sees Mason as our future no. 9 then nothing wrong with stop-gap options until he is ready to lead the line.

I've seen the grand total of two tweets saying he's staying and countless saying the opposite. Obvious which way this is going

Seems clear we are working hard to keep him and he hasn’t given a hard no...

Doesnt half make our summer easier if he stays one more year.

Was making a broad comparison of playibg style and injuries. Cavani was not looking good in his last season or so with PSG, to my understanding. Hope his injury record improves from this season. Great player to have around.

Can’t really blame him. We’re a bit screwed if he leaves though because not only is there barely anyone who can replace him, I wouldn’t be confident we’d spend the money to sign them if there was.

Is it? A goal every 142 minutes has him level pegged with Lacazette, which is about where you'd put him to be fair. He's got great movement and is an exemplary teacher for Greenwood but we're talking like we've bagged R9 for another year here. I want him to stay because he's great to have around the club but we can't be lulled into thinking he's our striker sorted for next year.

Our best bet is signing him for another year, there is no chance in hell we are signing Haaland or Kane. Beyond that, what are our options? He gives us something different and his work ethic is top.

Because we wont be buying any top striker this summer. If he goes, we will just buy a Cavani replacement and not a top one.

Maybe I wasn't paying attention before but does anyone else think Cavanis movement gets hyped up way too much. I've never heard so much praise about a striker's movement. Even before he came I heard more about his work rate and missed chances than his movement.
