Manchester United will join the rest of English football next weekend for a social media boycott from 15:00 BST on Friday 30 April to 23:59 BST on Monday 3 May, in response to the ongoing and sustained discriminatory abuse received online by players and many others connected to football.

Next weekend’s social media boycott is being backed and co-ordinated by The FA, Premier League, EFL, FA Women’s Super League, FA Women’s Championship, PFA, LMA, PGMOL, Kick It Out, Women in Football and the FSA.

At first I thought it was because they don't like what people write about the club, Glazers and Woodward.

Good.

Action needs to be taken by the social media platforms or it will be forced upon them.

Needs to be done away with anonymous accounts, fecking trolls causing people heartache. I’ve never once done or said something under anonymity online cowardice if you do...

Why such a short time, why not give a couple of months if they're serious.

They should just start blocking the offending accounts that reply to the clubs twitter for attention. I know people can just create new accounts but surely it gets old pretty quick.

It's thoughtful I think but ultimately misplaced. The popular social media platforms of our world are intended to be as large as possible and so are unmoderated by design. That they attract the so-called 'bad actors' seems part of what they are, and aside from requiring some form of personal identity to sign up - and then who'd police that? - it seems impossible to change them.

Edit - Bit cynical I know.

I can't remember why I joined this war.

I think it has to be forced upon them. The problem is that for platforms like twitter the outrage machine is their lifeblood so banning people who fuel that machine is against their business interest, the same goes for Facebook, Reddit and to probably even YouTube, which means aggressive and confrontational users are actually high value users for these platforms.

I'm guessing they do that already. I hope so anyway.

It just shows how many people are happy to advertise their ignorance online.

The Glazer family who supported the campaign of Donald Trump, one of the most obviously racist and xenophobic Western leaders in recent times, is now supposed to be virtue-signalling?

A lot of people were going on about hypocrisy at the start of this week but if anything is hypocritical is allowing these rats to own our club.

Does it mean they won't post anything during the weekend in their accounts to fight internet trolls? meh, such sacrifices!

I appreciate the sentiment but I have absolutely no doubt that the argument was presented that by not being on social media, they are likely to generate a lot of positive mentions and won’t miss out on any publicity.

I get that we all hate Glazers right now, but this is a stand against racism and I think it’s to be applauded

This is all completely pointless - it won't change anything. It might get noticed for a short time and then people will forget about it. The abuse will continue. Those that lack respect won't suddenly change their ways because of a superficial boycott.

Delete the app, unfollow them, don’t interact with them on anything, you might think it’s pointless but who cares, just do it. It’s not much effort and it’s worth a try.

I agree. Racism is a real issue but what really gets me is this social media blackout hypocrisy.

They can make a difference now. They are just not bothered enough because it's not about money. We literally saw this week (and I hated the ESL).

So, this is planned for the weekend United plays Liverpool, when the whole world will be watching and there are big protests planned? And over an issue that no one in their right mind would deny them to take a stand against? Nice move, Glazers. Nice move.

Well maybe the answer is that clubs decide to only use more sanitised social media platforms. Even if they reach fewer people.

It's idpol at its worst.

Of course we support the fight against racism, of course it is one of the biggest issues to plague not only football, but society in general.

However, it feels like an empty gesture coming from a multi billion pound business (which is what we are, we found that out the hard way) who couldn't give a feck about racism when it wasnt affecting their bottom line, but conveniently when they're under huge pressure on social media, they find the time.

So you’ll be standing beside the holy trinity with a flair in your hand but when it comes to actually taking a stand against racism a problem that’s centuries old it’s an empty gesture.

I'm not sure your point. The people standing outside protesting against racism, should they do so is absolutely amazing and I'll be one of them in July.

It's the actions of the company, that I find mehhhhh at best

The whole league signed up now? Not before time. Shouldn't just boycott, should all delete their accounts for 2 weeks. I'd happily delete my twitter account for 2 weeks in solidarity.

Very much for acting against discrimination, but the timing of the announcement makes me feel like it's being done to put their head in the sand for the negative comments about the owners.
Hopefully it's just the cynic in me, and the genuine reason is the one they've stated.

If it gets the social media companies to do away with anonymous accounts that give out the majority of racist abuse it’s a pretty big move for racism,

But you’re trying to tag me in a post to look like I fell for Glazer propaganda, when we can protest all year round if we want.
