Good player, but not fancy enough name for The Caf, i'm afraid ;)
I think this is unfortunately the case for some. His numbers are good and he offers that presence in the box we lack without Cavani.

Not a WUM thread. He always scores a good amount of goals every season. It’s hardly a crazy take.
You're saying a backup if Cavani leaves. Cavani is a starter when fit...

Who would he be a backup for? Ole has said Greenwood won't become a CF anytime soon. Martial is a backup himself. Rashford isn't a CF.

Improve the starting XI before thinking of buying backups. If you've got underperforming players in the starting XI you turn them into backups and buy improvements for the starting XI. Buying backups to compete with other players who should be backups is insanity.

After this game, he will have scored a goal every 203 minutes for Burnley. 48 goals in 139 games. Last season he scored 1/3 of all Burnley's league goals - so far this season he's on 34%. Those numbers are great. I remember wanting us some years ago to buy Rondon as a second striker to offer something different at a cheap price, so I'm all for suggestions like this.

We saw what happened when we had Fellaini to offer us something different

We have a bang average back up striker, he's called Martial.

I can sympathise. Way back when I was in the newbies, they did a draft game for young players. I picked Wood, and everyone mocked me :(

I say we double down. Begin the Wood: United Man campaign here. (Or WUM, for short).

Just think of the strides we’d make in the New Zealand market:drool:

Martial is underperforming, and if Cavani leaves, we'd need 2 strikers.
Wood and a starter as replacement for those two, would be pretty nice, in my opinion.

We can't just buy £80 mill players, Wood would be a good budget signing as one of two new strikers. How much wood would Chris Wood... etc.

I'm optimistic that with Greenwood, Amad and Pellistri, we could have good enough cover on the RW for a while, so focus should be on striker, DM and CB.

Why do we need budget signings? Arent we supposed to up the level of the squad?

Im A New Zealander. He is a hero down here. I remember him as a youngster in the age group national teams, we always knew he would do well. His sister is also in the WOmens national team. He is NZs current best player and as much as I love him for NZ I dont think he is what we need at Utd. Still its something I would love to see but we need to be signing the best of the best.

If we want to replace an underperforming Martial and Cavani leaves, we need 2 new strikers, also (in my opinion) we desperately need a quicker and better DM, plus it seems like most agree a new CB is needed, we can't just buy the most expensive player in each position.
With Martial's form this year, i'm in no doubt that Wood would be an upgrade to him and the squad.

OP must have got Wood during this match.
This thread is so good, it gives me wood!! If Wood scores 5 today- I vote @Solius for thread of the year.
But - it’s also a no from me. Mostly because I don’t see him fit the way we want to play. It’s more a style than a level thing for me.

He is the kind of player you sign for free on FM as a backup, only to sell him two years later. Under these conditions, i would be ok in reality too, however i m sure Burnley would ask more than 20 millions.

He's miles better than Igalho but then that was just a loan deal wasn't it and Burnley would want 20m + this summer.

People have laughed @Solius but I agree.

I've watched him probably longer than most as I saw alot of him while he was at Leeds and he was very consistent scorer then albeit in the championship, hes not just a tall bully type, he's actually good on the ball, he's a guarenteed double digits a season scorer so as back up I would t be against it.

4 straight PL seasons with 10+ goals, but I think we need a first choice no9 not a back up one.

I’m a big fan of his but it would be a touch underwhelming for us. Part of me wants him as a 3rd/4th choice striker but when you think of players that have filled that role for us before - you look at the likes of Sheringham, Ole, Yorke (when past his peak) - he’s levels below these guys.

I think the OP is being badly treated here. I'm not exactly advocating for getting Chris Wood (two years remaining on his deal, crucial to Burnley, won't be a cheap option), but as it is we've got one actual striker, and he's off in the summer. I'd want us to have two players capable of leading the line. Ings would be a better option though, and cheaper too because of his contract.
