I think the ability to shoot it like a bullet with pin point accuracy without much lifting of the foot also has something to do with. Players with world class shooting techniques tend to score all kinds of goals and he is one of them for sure.
Agree. I'm kind of baffled by the criticism to be honest. Seems very negative.

Greenwood has a clear eye for goal and has superb technical ability with both feet. He's a really special player.

What will set him apart from our other forwards is his desire to get a shot away. He's always working to put himself in the right area, then his main thought is "Can my first touch get me a chance to smash it on target". It's a superb trait that not many forwards have.

How often do we see James, Rashford and especially Martial take too many touches or be in two minds and by then the chance is gone. Greenwood is clinical. Touch - shoot. Simple in theory but it's his biggest asset

His accuracy is something else too

I said this last year too! He seemed to properly 'scuff' some of his finishes last year but then it pea rolls into the bottom corner :houllier:

Well, if it goes in it goes in...but sometimes I do wonder how

Anyhow, he's been playing great lately. Good lad. Had a bad first half of the season.
See Lampard. Some people have a goalscoring instinct and shooting ability that gives them a greater chance than scoring compared to others regardless of whether they hit the ball perfectly well. Others need to get it just right to score. That Mason like Lampard is part of the first category is due to his qualified.

Not aimed at you but while he has areas to improve on, people become far too critical after the odd not so great peformance. I believe it's due to the obsession with every quality talent needing to be another Mbappe and if not he's really overrated etc etc Young players need time. Ronaldo was frustrating as hell as a kid and as good as Rooney he was rough around the edges when it came to his goalscoring , it wasn't all CL Vs Fenerbace.

I honestly do think he's absolutely class and some of the criticism he's faced this year has been crazy. What I will say however is he's lacking that real 'wow' game. Rashford has produced a number of those games, debut vs Arsenal, winner vs City, a run of Europa games a few years ago where he carried the side. Greenwood needs a game or run of games where he proves he can be the main man and really punishes someone. I feel it's coming and it will happen sooner rather than later because he just has unbelievable talent and he's only getting better.

Southgate really threw him to the wolves in the international break, from being protected at United, to then just be thrown to the papers like he was, showed poor management from Southgate.

Ole has since managed him really well, never spoke a bad word about him which is exactly what a young player wants.

Everyone expects a young player to be inconsistent, playing in the PL and CL this year, he has improved his all round game. I can only see improvement from him in the coming seasons.

Daddy Gunman was always going to feed those useless minnows some goals. Knew he would score from the moment he came on.

That was absolutely ridiculous, we spent all season keeping him hidden from the public eye only for Southgate to unveil him to the media like a new Avenger, then one of the first fecking questions he's asked is about his captain getting arrested. What he did in Iceland was daft, no doubt about it, but Southgate should've known better and I think the club had a right to be angry about the way he was handled.

I'm still mad at how this experiment turned out. I mean the horny bugger was at fault too but this whole drama really hampered him.

It almost felt like all the hard work was undone, yes what Greenwood done was daft but he was 18, people have to cut him some slack. Compare that to Foden who actually has a kid, nothing was said.

I just feel Southgate left him out to dry, instead of protecting the youngsters.

I wonder if he will get picked for the Euros though, part of me hopes he doesn't so Greenwood can have a summer of rest and work on his game.

I feel that because, even if he does go, he will barely play. We saw that with Rashford, in the world cup, he hardly got a game.

This is not a criticism per se but he's been quite 'lucky' with quite a lot of his goals. A lot of scuffed shots, deflections and poor keeping. Long may it continue of course and I'll always encourage taking a fecking shot than over passing but I've been consistently surprised by how they keep going in
I think we can look at this in two ways. One, it is good that he took his shots as early as he could whenever he can and scored. Another way is, he is almost the opposite of players like Martial and Rashford, where both tend to 'overplay' and tried to make that perfect shot and sometimes the chance is gone when they did that. Either way, luck is still needed.
Either way, all are still relatively young forwards. I mean, where were Vardy at their age? For me, I am happy the way Ole has managed Mason so far.

Agree. It was very poor from Southgate. He and the FA should be aware of the state of the english media, they could have deald with it internally.

I think because of this incident, the Euros will come to early for Mason. But he will certainly be part of the worldcup squad in 2022 if he continues to play like he is capable of.

I wonder if next season will be the year he starts week in week out? Ole obviously managed his games last season it being his breakthrough season, he's been in and out this season due to his summer exploits and loss in form (which he's obviously put behind him now)

He absolutely needs to be on the First team sheet week in week out.
His shooting is out of this world, it's almost as your watching a video game, every shot is on target, i've rarely see him blast it on the stands or even just a little over the bar, he just shoots straight.
Clint Eastwood accuracy.

And you can see he absolutely loves the competition - he thrives and learns from Cavani and Bruno, not just sulks.

Keep it up Mason!

I think you might be right. He's lucky, in a sense, that the World Cup will be coming around so soon. If he continues his progression at the rate he's going then it'd be difficult to keep him out of that squad.

Yeah except you’re forgetting that Rashford did that in a garbage team in between rough performances as a teenager where he was required to be “the guy” every game. Greenwood has never had to be that guy, and I’m sure if for some reason he was then he’d have a few of those games too. Because Greenwood at his current level is a far better prospect than Rashford was at that level.

We are so lucky to have him. Special player. Bound to have his off days so hope everyone in the club has patience with him.
Ole is the perfect manager for him at this stage of his career.

It's a bit clear that he's our future number 9 from Ole and the club's stance around him. This summer is going to be very interesting. Pogba fixing a puzzle on the left has really thrown a spanner in the works. Ole even mentioned that United have to keep him away from defending as much, essentially stating that he's no longer viewed as a midfielder. We probably won't sell him as a result ( he'll get a new contract) and will be a key part of our attack moving forward. This pushes Rashford to competing for the spot on the right or as a centre forward. Greenwood may very well be going head to head with Marcus. This also essentially reduces the likelihood that we spend money on a right winger, with Cavani also potentially staying and Amad featuring more in the team.

My best guess is that Amad will eventually compete head to head with Rashford for the spot on the right, Martial will be sold, Mason will transition to our number 9 rather quickly starting by rotating with Cavani before completely taking over. We won't sign an attacker this window. If we do, it will most likely be a striker that can compete with Mason rather than dominate moving forward ( tbh there aren't many world class strikers) similar to the Benzema/ Higuain or Drogba/Gudjohnsen dynamic.

Pogba moving left does mean we have the opportunity to season a more capable all around midfielder this summer; that can help us build out of the back, whilst being capable defensively, finally allowing our attackers to attack. Personally, I would replace both roles as I don't feel either Mctominay or Fred are United starter quality, particularly in the modern game. However, I would suggest only signing one player ( Kessie, Paredes, Camavinga, Narhaus even Tielmens) and assess the other options we have partnering them. How would Fred look next to a player who takes the build up responsibility? Can Mctominay improve at all and stop hiding? Can Garner translate his play from the championship to the premier league like Grealish did? Can Mejbri stand out and take over that spot? Fred is good enough to hold down the spot in the worst case scenario for at least one season.

Defensively, signing a more aerially inclined defender than Lindelof should be the mission. Maguire is a fantastic centre back that takes on too much responsibility imo. He's not Van Dijk, so he can't cover 2 roles consistently, but he's been doing a good job most of the time in that regard. We can win the league without signing a defender, its our midfield that has prevented us from challenging previously. However, if we want to ensure that we match the best possible team City can provide, signing a better defender than Lindelof would help with that. We haven't lost a game by more than 2 goals in the league since Spurs beat us 6-1 to start ( our early campaign woes were down to fitness). Since then we have only lost 1 game, despite rarely putting up dominant performances. Part of that is down to our defence, if we improve on that, thereby dropping the goals conceded from set pieces, corners, aerial mishaps, we would have the best defence in the league.

Media has a way of hyping players and influencing fans appreciations.
If you listen to the media you will never kmow Greenwood is a better talent than Rashford and Rashie is a better talent than Rooney. A team like Barcelona would also prioritize them in the same order.
Rooney was explosive yes but Masom can do everything technically.
Also current united team is way better than the united teams since Ronaldo left.

Pointing out the obvious, but he is still a teenager. Of course this season hasnt been as good as last, but it will have been a gret learnign experience for him. He has already done a lot mor ethan some of the other excellent youngsters in the England squad did at his age.

He obviously posseses ability. The only concern I have at all is where his best position is. Different player but Dean Sturridge was also very talnted but he for me wasnt really a winger or a striker, still to see what Greenwood really is positionally? Hopefully we shall see in time

Also his shot selection is good, he doesn't go for hopeless shots. When he pulls the triggers, he is always in a zone of comfort.
The only thing I feel like he lacks that bit of variety (shot fake and switch the ball on his other foot) but since he is so young, without a doubt he will improve on it

His finishing is so lethal it will lead to recalibration of that xg stat. The power behind his shots is such that even when the keeper has a hand, foot to it ...it still likely goes in

His natural balance is he can go either side and still finish in same fashion. Mirror images of either foot. He got a bit selfish earlier in the season (part of growing up) and Bruno gave him a pep talk and he improved immensely his decision-making. And to think we have an academy kid (18 yr old) who's a clone of Greenwood....

Why on earth would you replace pogba with Rashford on the left when it’s clear Rashford is the better player in that role.

I actually think Pogba should play on the right if anything and rival Greenwood there.

Rashford, Greenwood, Cavani, Diallo, Pogba, Grealish, Bruno. (Martial sold)

I don’t know if we can do that but that rivals city’s attack.

I don’t mind selling pogba though if it means we could get Kane, as the below is arguably the best attack in the league and would probably cost net £30 million.

Rashford, Greenwood, Cavani, Diallo, Pellistri, Bruno, Kane, Grealish.

The age profile of the above is wonderful and it’s very achievable.

How many players even do that? Neymar, and Messi probably. Henry and Ronaldhinio before that. After that you have to go to midfielders as strikers tend to come alive in bursts as they need service - The likes of Haaland and Mbappe are very much moments players again. Caf favourite overrated player Ibrahimovic doesn't consistently dominate and comes alive in a few moments in the final third really.

I think if he's able to become a complete striker who is involved in all phases of the game like an Henry at arsenal then that's unique. But if he isn't we should be more than happy for him to be a end product phenomenon

Pogba is brilliant on the left and average om the right. No point in shoehorning him in where he doesn't work.

And people need to stop adding Amad and Pellistri to our attacking line ups. They're kids who have a long way to go. Sound great on paper but in practice you need players who are ready to deliver and these kids need time.

Funny when people say he's having second season syndrome. Maybe he is but he's been steadily banging goals in for the second half of that second season. There's very few centre forwards doing what he's doing at this age.

Anyone else think he’s been a little under hyped by the media? It’s not a bad thing and maybe it’s partly down to the excellent man management by Ole but he just seems to go massively under the radar in a way that Rooney certainly didn’t and I seem to recall even Rashford was more hyped up (Martial definitely when he arrived). I’d expect the media to be absolutely building hun up to high heavens considering his ability.

Maybe I mis-worded it or over- worded it?

However, have you seen Greenwood have a 10/10 performance for us?

I've seen Rashford, Martial, Pogba, Bruno Fernandes play like they are the best player on the pitch for 90 mins - He has a fantastic ability to score a goal but I've yet to really see that performance from Greenwood.

I know he can do it & it doesnt help that his chances are not consistent especially centrally - but I've seen him play centrally as the top of our attack and in centre forward partnerships- and I feel he can impose himself on a match more especially when playing more centrally.

He is improving his game month by month and that's great and I am a big fan - but the way people talk about him so highly and other players like Rashford more lowly is a bit confusing. I've seen Rashford be a main part in taking teams down like PSG, Man City or even Arsenal on his debut whilst Greenwood so far feels like an added annoyance to the opposition to defend against rather than THE problem that the opposition cant deal with.

He will get there one day but I'm not seeing it right now.

I think this is a good take on the situation. If Cavani and Pogba stay for another season I definitely think the focus will be on CM. Bailly has just signed a new deal and I think that must have come with some assurances so I am not convinced that we will be signing a CB. We don't have much cover for AWB at RB, I get the impression that Ole is not convinced by Brandon and it is still probably too early for Ethan Laird.
What I still don't really understand is, what was the plan for DVdB? Is he cover for Bruno?

i see your point. I agree, when he’s the focal point, he hasn’t been “the main man” - he is however a great example of how a young player should be managed. He’s not a Ronaldo or (the other) Ronaldo or an Owen. He needs to be nurtured, and has a lot to learn - he floats in and out of games. It’s why he can be very potent as a sub, and he can make an impact, but not sustained over 90 mins.

it will come.

Amad and Pellistri would be in and around the first team squad, when I say best in the league in concentrating on the other six.

Also your point about Pogba is bizarre as we are shoehorning Rashford into the right side, Rashford is our best left sided player and has proved it this season and is useless on the right, Pogba should play on the right. An average Pogba on the right as you say is better than Rashford.

The pleasing thing to see is that the players very often drift generally too. Pogba took up central positions at various points of the Roma fixture, Rashford can move more in a CF role too. I don't think we'll go into next season with either Pogba or Rashford on the right in any games. I have a funny feeling Sancho will be "the" move we do, clustered with 1-2 squad signings, but that will mean the right wing = Sancho or Greenwood all season.

Rashford only ever did this from the age of 22, Mason is 19, the statement you’ve made is largely irrelevant as we should wait a few more years rather than criticising mason for that now.

Think his well taken goal and brilliant assist that helped knocked Liverpool out of the cup is probably worth mentioning here. Rashford too was terrific that day though.
