The money staked in the UK by fans is completely insignificant. They really don't even cause a blip in the price movements. But without going into betting syndicates and Asian bookies again, think about your scenario: Let's say Liverpool fans had indeed created this imbalance by betting on their team. This would mean the current price is wrong and United are undervalued. Any smart bettor would recognise this and stake United accordingly. The price would instantly correct itself.
But those investors don't want a perfect correlation, they want the variances, because that where make their margin

Don't care about 2nd place implications for us at this point, but I definitely want to see Liverpool not finish in the top 4. Let's get it done on Sunday!
Spot on. If you beat Liverpool then I think their CL hopes are over. It would be great seeing them in the Europa League..haha!!

Top 4 finish will be officially secured if Man United win tomorrow and West ham fail to beat Burnley on Monday.

I think top 4 is all but sorted now.

If West Ham had the likes of Rice and Antonio fit and able to play then maybe they'd pip a Chelsea concentrating on other competitions but with their injuries I don't see it. Feels like they're ran out of gas right at the end.

Hopefully we beat Liverpool anyway.

I vaguely remember Moyes saying after their game last week that pretty much all of their injured players would be back for their next game. I may be mistaken. But hopefully that’s the case and they can manage a mini run and pip Chelsea. The latter have a hell of a run-in.

Exactly this. Long may it continue (while Chelsea, Liverpool and City have some of the best managers in the world).
Your record since Project restart has been abysmal. We are nearing nearly 1.5 seasons worth of data. Sure there are injuries but every team has had their fair share and have had to cope. Will be really interesting to see how things play out next season. You guys are struggling financially and have a squad which is completely mature and needs fresh blood very soon. We need a couple of signings in the right areas to jump up a level.
From what I see, the cycle is moving and Pool will see a big issue going forward.

It’s not 1.5 seasons though. It’s a few games at the back end of last season after the league was won, and since Christmas this year (we were top and looking good up until that point apart from the Villa game).

We have an ageing midfield and do need a refresh, but I do think we’ve got another title challenge in us under Klopp.

I agree Van Dijk’s return will be interesting.

You looked good at the start because the other teams who would have challenged you didn't have a preseason to speak of and that helped a lot. I am not saying you aren't a good team but the guy I was replying to basically was writing United off under Ole when the proof since at least Jan 2020 says otherwise.

Edit: Calling Tuchel a world class manager is not even premature, but laughable. His only major honors are Ligue 1, which frankly even Ole would do with PSG.

The difference is we are looking good in the FA cup and a real opportunity to win the Champions League. I would much rather have that then 2nd place. I am not saying Man Utd shouldn't enjoy their season. I think both teams have reason to feel good about the season. I get more excited about trophies than the 2-4th place finishes. There is only one PL winner and the rest lost it.
Love how the Chelsea fans are getting ahead of themselves. Second leg of the semi still to come in a delicately poised 1-1 but everyone thinks they will win the cup.

On the wider debate re seasons, United clearly have had the better season but will have nothing to show for it if we don't win the EL. A 2nd place finish isn't worth remembering, regardless of what Jose had to say when he managed it. This will be our best season since SAF retired and that's about it. (I don't think Jose's comparable season was as good because of the dire football and the cracks he was creating with the fans.

If Chelsea win the CL, then they would have definitely had the best second half to the season (even better than City). But the end result is still a 25% outcome. Should be debated only once they have won it.

For now, it's equally possible Chelsea may not win CL and finish out of the top 4 as well.

The “proof since Jan 2020” is that you’re a good team with some good and some great players, not that you are close to winning the league imo. I think should you win the league it’s despite Ole rather than because of him.

Edit: Calling Tuchel a world class manager is not even premature, but laughable. His only major honors are Ligue 1, which frankly even Ole would do with PSG.
You’re a good team, no doubt, but I do indeed think that you’ll never win the league or let alone the CL with Ole, so yeah long may it continue for me. That’s my opinion regardless of how Liverpool is doing. Happy to admit I was completely wrong should it happen.

And Tuchel is a world class manager imo, not sure how he’s viewed globally but I think quite a few would agree. Many on here want(ed) Pochettino instead of Ole if I’m not mistaken and he hasn’t won anything ever either.

Never fails to amaze me how many fall into the trap of going on supposed easy/hard games in a top 4 race. If us, Everton, Liverpool whoever were sweeping up in "easy" games we wouldn't be in a top 4 race.
It does tend to work out that way though. You said the same thing last year when you definetley werent going to lose v Liverpool at Anfield or drop points v West Ham etc last year. By and large you can see whos on the beach and who isnt.

If United win the Europa, what happens with the CL spot that is given to the winners? United will have already qualified through the top 4, so who does the EL winner spot get passed on to?

That chelsea win yesterday basically put an end to both top 4 fight and relegation fight.

It would be nice to think Chelsea are just having a honeymoon period under tuchel but the consistent structure and rock solid defence that has continued under him is no fluke.

United may be second in the table but in reality we are currently the third best side in the league, with it being a real toss up between man city and Chelsea as to who is actually currently the best team in the league and expect Chelsea to be best positioned to beat man city to the league title next season.

How are we currently the third best side?

We're way above Chelsea and in better form than them.

You're going to have to explain your logic behind that one.

Didn’t Tuchel win a cup with Dortmund as well?

I don’t get why fans seem to hate other managers getting credit - Tuchel may well get to a CL final, FA cup trophy and top four from where Lampard left them. Ole hopefully will finish 2nd and pick up the EL. It’s only at the end of the season you can really judge but you’d be a fool to suggest he hasn’t done well with Chelsea so far.

We're not favourites because our home form this season has been shaky (although recent home form has been very good). To call us "underdogs" when the odds are so close and our league position is much better than Liverpool's is just trolling.
Mate, he's not even calling us underdogs against Liverpool. He's trying to argue Chelsea are a better team than us

Based on betting sites only.
He makes some good points for any given game.

But none of it correlates to who is the better overall team for the season (it correlates to who they think the better overall team to bet on today is) and definitely didn't prove his argument Chelsea are better.

It gets passed to the French league. They get an extra CL spot, it goes to next lower ranked leagues. England Italy Germany and Spain all have 4 places while other leagues have less. France got a 3rd spot when Chelsea, Sevilla and Atletico won the Europe but already got top 4.

3rd place in France will directly enter the group stage instead of the playoffs. And then they'll fill up all the other vacant spots by promoting teams from highest-ranked associations.

  • If the Champions League title holders qualify for the group stage via their domestic league, the champions of association 11 (Turkey in 2019/2020) will enter the group stage, and champions of the highest-ranked associations in earlier rounds will also be promoted accordingly.
  • If the Europa League title holders qualify for the group stage via their domestic league, the third-placed team of association 5 (France) will enter the group stage, and runners-up of the highest-ranked associations in the second qualifying round will also be promoted accordingly.
  • If the Champions League or Europa League title holders qualify for the qualifying rounds via their domestic league, their spot in the qualifying rounds is vacated, and teams of the highest-ranked associations in earlier rounds will be promoted accordingly.
  • An association may have a maximum of five teams in the Champions League. Therefore, if both the Champions League and Europa League title holders come from the same top-four association and finish outside of the top four of their domestic league, the fourth-placed team of the league will not compete in the Champions League and will instead compete in the Europa League.

Chelsea's defence/game control is a concern. Tuchel has taken them from a shambles to possibly the hardest team to break down in 3-4 months and he had to come in mid-season. I wouldn't say Chelsea are currently better than Utd, but I would say they project a lot higher than Utd in the mid-long term owing to the amount of players they have new to the league/there age demographics. However, whether this projection is met is another matter.

My real concern with Chelsea is that they add a real goal scorer and a CM who isn't a midget to their team. If they do that, and continue to control/defend games as they have been since Tuchel came in, they will be a very hard team to beat.

How many points have Chelsea gained on us since Tuchel joined? Genuine question.

Since he took over I think they've got 32 points from 15 and we've got 27 points from 14.

So we win today and they're currently a whopping 2 points ahead of us since Tuchel took over.

Aaah thanks for doing the research, so very little in it then.

I find it so bizarre that people are so desperate to downplay their own team.

These top 4 threads in particular seem to bring out the worst in some Utd fans.

We've had guys on here say Chelsea had top 4 sorted when they were 3 points clear of 5th and yet we'll be 10 plus points clear of 5th and those same fans are panicking and worrying we won't make it.

It's very odd.

I guess it just demonstrates reason v emotion and when it comes to United being truly objective can be very difficult. But that’s why we love football!

To be fair, I think that is more to do with football fans being pessimistic as a general rule.

There is a bit of a Tuchel love in on here. He has done a good job with Chelsea since he took over to be fair, but I can only imagine the reaction on here if we played the pragmatic football they do.

Why don’t you go support Chelsea then?
