Is Jadon Sancho really worth the 100 plus million fee?

I think we’d be mad not to sign him personally, we desperately need a creative winger

He’d be perfect for us and is already one of the top players in world football at 21
this... we been crying out loud for a world class RW.... he is the best we can get at this stage..... If he comes around 70-80m.... no brainer....Get him, a proper defensive midfielder who can also pass .... and a WC defender.... We looking at total outlay of no more than 200m....

Sell Martial, James, Jesse, One of the goal keepers ... 80-100m back... Net spend of approx 100m and we are set for title challenge

Clubs just need to recover, finances must come first after the pandemic. Only PSG and City can spend this summer.

Dream signing

Imagine how lethal and pacy our front three or four will be if he joins. Teams wouldn't be able to live up with us

I hope we don't over pay given the COVID situation.

We have a good chance now to play hardball and help dictate market prices. Given COVID we should aim closer to $60M. (pending what others are paying for other players)

From what we heard last season, Ole wanted Sancho and Grealish.

Given our buys I assume we will only get one.

Now is everyone in agreement that you would rather have Sancho than Grealish?

I actually can’t quite believe that, Grealish is twice the player, more creative and an unbelievable ball carrier who can play across the from 5 positions.

Grealish and Kane and we win the league and Keane agrees with me!:smirk:

As usual this guy doesn't have a clue about this particular transfer. Spoken after their club president has already given a hint and others have talked about the bid that the club is looking for.

Not sure about him being able to play across 5 positions. His best performances have come playing from the left or as a No10 two positions we're stacked in he's never had an extended run on the RW and frankly his style of play isn't suited to the right. Sancho has proven himself equally on both wings, in the CL, 5 years younger and will be cheaper. Villa will want close to £100m for Grealish and he's nowhere near worth that

Grealish is a great player and he would be amazing buy for United as well but bolded part is something which has no basis in reality he is at his best as LAM might be equally effective in the Central Attacking Midfield role but outside that is pure conjecture and I don't think he would be at his best at any other role.

At least one thing we can agree on... Woodward and Judge will have nothing to do with any transfer activity... Thick gits who buy players our manager doesn’t want (VdB, Telles) because they perceive value. This isn’t investment banking, it’s football. Those two clowns should be nowhere near the negotiating table. Last summer’s saga over Sancho was unbearable.

Regarding price — €100m/£86m, I’d rather risk 86m on a young, productive winger than 80m on a 25 year old CB....
Bolded part is pure bullshit.

Ole has a veto, confirmed by the club:

https://assets.manutd.com/AssetPick...ril_2021_Final_Minutes1619197103898_img1x.pdf

I even cut & paste the interesting part for you:

The scouting team work closely with Ole to produce options for consideration based on the type of profile which Ole feels that the team needs. Ole has a veto, because as a club we will not sign a player that a manager doesn't want.

It's been said several times that it was the pitch from Ole that convinced VDB to join.

Telles we could have gotten on a free this summer, so how is that also 'value'?

By the same measure is £130m on Maguire and AWB also 'value' signings?

Grealish is twice the player of Sancho? Really? I thought i've read a lot of dross on the Caf but this one is probably right up there

Only way we're looking at Grealish now is if Pogba is sold, and even then its a far stretch. Sancho isnt contingent on sales, so dunno why people are bringing him up here :)

‘Agree to disagree then. The stats back up the productivity as similar, with more assists coming when he lines up on the right. You’ve made this point before, there’s no sense in continuing to discuss, as clearly the fact is that he plays both RW and LW, and plays them both equally well, statistically. YOUR preference is that he plays LW, but you aren’t Ole, there was an offer last season for the player, it’s basically the same situation. The cited links actually list him playing RW more often than LW in both the 19/20 season and the 20/21 season. Source: transfermarkt
And why would that be the case? Isn't it a bit more probable that you want him to be RW because that would mean he fits into your team than me wanting him to be a LW just for the sake of it? ;)

Transfermarkt is quite shit at those things. Sancho these days isn't just first choice as LW, Terzic even plays other players such as Reus or Hazard out of position to play Sancho there. If you really want to go into detail, Sancho is more of an AM in many of Dortmund's games because they played three at the back quite often under Favre and Terzic. And in this case, Sancho is playing as one of two AMs, usually left sided, and almost exclusively moves in the half spaces or between the lines with the wing backs providing width, not him.

It also should have you thinking that every world class player with Sancho's profile plays with his strong foot on the inside. I believe it's not debatable that he's a player who drifts towards the center of the pitch and sometimes even starts there. He even does it when he plays on the right. And having the ball on your inside foot when cutting inside opens up more possibilities because if it's the other way round, you're not only dribbling away from goal, you also have to shoot and play through balls with your weak foot. There hasn't been a single world class inverted winger who played with his strong foot on the outside at all. Maybe Sterling if we're being generous.

I think this is incredibly obvious if you watch Sancho play to be honest. He's so clearly preferring the left wing and his best scenes occur either there or in the half spaces.

He might not be twice the player, but Gealish is performing in premier league. The jury is still out on Sancho if he will be able to do so. I don't believe Sancho will be able to recreate his bundesliga output in the premier league. Sancho might be the more obvious choice due to our lack of a rightsided attacker. Would love to see both at United though.

Just a littler reminder for everyone of the player we're talking about here. Mad that anyone wouldn't take him.

I would also refer to the above for anyone who says he never plays on the right anymore. Has done so multiple times this season.

I’m firmly in the “Sancho is a no brainer” camp. I’d play hardball with Dortmund though. Sancho will primarily play on the right but he can also play left when rashford inevitably needs a rest. He can feed balls to cavani all day . We would have cavani, rashford, greenwood, Sancho, diallo, martial and James to choose from. Not too bad!
Read somewhere that Rashford could undergo shoulder surgery after Euros, that would surely mean him out for a few months at least? So potentially Sancho would start his career at United playing left winger most of the time.

That would be the case because you provide zero evidence to call it incredible obvious he’s just decent RW, and he’s more a LW. Why should we trust a non-trustworthy and questionable statement where there are two different sources proved you wrong.

Will Sancho perform better than Dan James? I think that's an overwhelming yes. If so, sign him.

I think the point being made here is that even when on paper he starts on the right, his contributions frequently come from the left. And that ignores the fact that these sites recording the starting position aren't necessarily accurate.

That being said I don't think there's a massive difference in where he's best, but if you actually watch Dortmund play he does tend to favour drifting in to the centre from the left, rather than stay on the right. I mean just watch the video posted above you to see that more often than not he's found on the left.
I think the takeaway isn't so much that he's a LW, but rather that to get the best out of him he shouldn't be given a strict role but be allowed to roam freely and interchange with the other attacking players.

This is where people and one of them @Zehner don't understand that Sancho actually suitable with Ole's system. Ole plays a very fluid front four, similar to our 07/08 team but instead of front 3 it's front 4. Our front four tend to interchange position in the game which sometime you see James plays as striker while Cavani plays on the left wing. So Sancho won't necessary be sticking into RW the full 90 minutes with us and the fact Sancho does it in Dortmund is making him into a perfect signing as he has adapted the fluid & flexible style of the front four. On top of it, we need another playmaker to add creativity in the squad and Sancho is considered as playmaking winger.

Sign him and our attack and forward options will be grand. If you think our defence is bad, let us outscore the opposition then!

Thats not how it works. He has to worth the premium too.
Clearly. I mean Lingard is better than James for a start and very likely would perform better than him next season and is already on our books. To spend the money we need 10 years plus of top quality delivery. Sancho could well be worth that but a valuation in the current market is a bit tricky. £70m maybe.

Unpopular opinion - Raphinha is more the player we want RW.

I'd want Raphinha and a top CDM.

Yeah I agree, but the problem with that could be that United doesn't really have players who slot into that RW position while Sancho overloads the left side and combines in the centre. So I can already see people's disappointment in matches when it won't work well, and those matches will happen too. I think Dortmund generally have more flexible players in that regard, while United's players mostly prefer the left and Wan Bissaka isn't known for his attacking contributions.

Whatever the outcome, I predict getting there will be a repeat of last summer, dragging on with Dortmund asking high and United bidding less.

Whether Dortmund are willing to accept less in the end won't make much difference until then. They'll still try to give off the appearance that there is no discount. United will hold out thinking the price will come down eventually.

By which time we'll be approaching the end of August (ignoring arbitrary 'deadlines')

The only problem I have with Sancho is that although he is brilliant he is more of the same. Rashford, Martial, Greenwood have a similar style although slightly different i.e. they all try to take on a player, come inside and shoot or try run in behind the defense if they push up. I wonder how Rashford, Martial, Sancho would do against low block park the bus teams with Fred /McTominay behind them. Or even any of the other combinations - Rashford/Cavani/Sancho, Martial/Greenwood/Sancho etc.
Even with say a Rice and Fred would Bruno being the sole creator be enough? Or are we saying Pogba in a 2 with say Rice/Fred and Rashford/Cavani/Sancho up front. That seems more like it attacking wise but it would hamper Pogba and wouldnt it get overrun?

I still cant see the right balance in our team.

Sancho is much more proven tbf.

Raphina would be my second choice but he will still cost mad money.
As mentioned a lot in this thread, the best of Sancho is from the left and moving into the centre. That is the game of Pogba, Rashford and obviously Bruno centrally too. Raphinha is just a proper RW.

If we sign him, can we play Rash at 9 and him on LW. Then, Mason and Amad rotate for RW.

I think United will try to put in lots of add ons and making the numbers and appear acceptable to BVB and the football world, probably a basic fee of around 60M + achievable add ons. Wages and agent fees are apparently already agreed last summer so if both want to get this done, it should be pretty amicable and quick this time round
