you make a good point. Another example is where a defender pulls down an attacker at a corner when the attacker wouldn’t have even got to the ball, or the ball was 15 yards away - it’s still a pen.

it is interesting because there used to be a tendency for pens not to be given If the attacker was kicking the ball out of play, and the ball was no longer under control. Technically should still be a pen, but the convention was often not to give it.

I still think it’s soft, as I thought Cavani landed on Smalling as much as being taken out.

it’s another grey area, that shouldn’t be grey.
Re your first example above; I don't think the point is how far away from the ball the attacker is or whether he could have gotten to it, but whether the defender is preventing him from participating in the attack. Even if he was far away from the ball when he got taken down, he might have gotten in position for a rebound or a pass as the situation continued. Hence, a basis for a penalty, but it depends on the situation. But if the action of the defender makes no difference to that (as I think was the case here), then it usually doesn't get called. And I think there's some sense in that.

fair point. And similar to when a player is going past a defender or keeper and kicks the ball past, but he’s no chance of actually getting the ball before it goes out of play. They rarely used to be given, but almost always are now.

@Niall what's happening with the return leg Matchday Thread?

I'm guess that the Matchday Forum doesn't allow for a match being abandoned, or something?

Or are you working on the basis that he supporters won't allow us to play any more games ever again?
 the latter for sure! Seasons over as far as I'm concerned.

(I need to fix this, thanks for the nudge)

If it means Woodward is on his bike earlier, of course!
Well that sorts that then! :)

Thank you for joining the Manchester United recruitment team. Please adhere to the following rules -
1. Under no circumstances are you to scout, start pre negotiations or even browse football manager for potential players until the transfer window has opened.
2. You may only buy a player that we really should have signed last year.
3. You must not buy any player until you have squeezed every social media drip out of any links that we have. (If that means we don't sign anyone then that's ok)
4. We the Glazers don't actually want you to sign any players, so please do your best to look like you are working while not really working. (I need to pay for the orange leather in my supercar)

Hello Mr. Trump?
Yes it's the Glazers. The last guy didn't last very long.....no, he had what they call morals. We need another inciter of violence and were wondering if you had some free time before you go to jail? ...... Yes, complete control of millions of people's emotions.... No, the only expectation is that you don't do what you say you will....yes, I believe you have the relevant experience....

Thank you sir, you are hired!!

Newsflash from the Glazers’ new super yacht in the Caribbean:

“We the board have decided that the incumbent’s hands are too small and fall short of the standards of this great club. There’s also concern that the threat of attack by seagulls on his hair is too great a health and safety risk. Motion to hire denied!”
