Rubbish performance. Cut out one cross, made some simple passes, gave the ball away cheaply a few times, offered almost nothing.

Van de Beek is nowhere near the standard of Fred or McTominay. He's only marginally closer to them than he is to Fernandes. I have no idea why there are so many posts on here demanding Donny get mins in CM.

To be fair to him, it isn't easy coming from the Eredivisie straight to the PL. We fell for the CL hype and got Klaasen'd, it happens, time to move on. I'm sure he'll have a decent career elsewhere

37 passes, just less than half of what Matic made.

He isn't an 8, a 10, or a 2nd striker either.
most of matic passes were going across the centre backs. you can’t really use that as a stat to call him out

He's mastered Cleverley's signature move. Extend your arms out whilst asking for the ball like you're going to do something with it, and then do nothing with it.

I still can't believe we bought him. It was obvious at Ajax he was rubbish.

Guy gets benched for 90 percent of the year doesn't do well against a top team. Would've never guessed.

Difficult to find any rhythm in your game without getting a consistent run in the team.

He just plays too safe which wouldn't be so bad if he wasn't so invisible the rest of the time. Just hoping it's a confidence issue with such a dodgy year for the world on top. I'll hold my judgement till next year though.

Used to think of him as someone who could play anywhere in midfield (aside from DM) because he's an intelligent player like Blind. Apparently not. I dont know what he brings to the team really. First season syndrome?

I just dont see him being good enough. Still hopeful that maybe next season he will show us what he can do but he will need to really make big improvements quickly.

People slated me for saying he'd be our worst midfielder when we were linked with him. I don't think Fred and Scott are good enough to be starters either but it was obvious that even they were a lot better than Donny. What on earth were our scouts thinking?

Players need time to adapt with different league but in VDB’s case he needs time to adapt with both different league and different system. You can see so clear why he doesn’t play enough especially in double pivot. He doesn’t play progressive. His mentality is safe passes.

I think 35m was a waste of money when he doesn’t really play that much either means having Pereira is taking his minutes won’t really make any difference.

Poor performance today. The circumstances are far from ideal, but still, you would expect him to do the basics better than that. I can live with not playing killer balls when he isn't up to speed with his teammates, but he should still be tidy in possession, shield the ball and take up positions in space more often than he did.

I’d like to see him paired with Fred in the middle and see how that works. Bad today mind.

Most of us didnt even rate him off the Dutch League; it was the games we saw him play in the CL.

He looks nothing similar to that.

Ive been happy with Ole's signings so far - so I really hope this was a bit forced on him the way his performances are looking.

Ole needs to finally express what he needs from him, or just sell him and find proper player for his system.

Dig up stupid!
At this point the Cleverley comparisons flatter him. Its scary how basic and reserved his game is

I really hope it's a confidence thing and we can pick him up over preseason but atm it's not looking good at all

Fred was awful in his first season in England, turned out to be a decent player for us. Not sure if Donny will make it at United but he surely deserves another season, wasn't he quite good in our CL games this season playing on the wing? Barely got minutes in the league until today as well.

What can you say about Van de Beek? Being honest, if a bit cruel, he just doesn't look up to it.

He wasn't rubbish he just didn't excel at any areas our squad displayed weaknesses in. He's very one dimensional playing one particular position in a particular system. The club should have purchased a natural 8 who can perhaps move forward if needed pending Bruno's availability.

Yes, I think this was a somewhat realistic hope/expectation for today in that role. There was no good reason this wasn't perfectly feasible, in the first half we had enough play and similarly after Leicester scored they sat back. He wasn't continually under immense pressure, he seemed to just pass on responsibility. Very unfortunate.

Didnt he also pass the ball sideways pretty much every time.....or lose it. One thing struck me, all this "intelligent player"....I really dont see it, his movement and I mean simple movements not darting runs....are atrocious.

I thought before we signed him he was the wrong signing and overhyped in that side, just a hard working terrier with good technique. I havent seen anymore than that from him, less if anything. Tough first season since he has barely featured, but why should he, not taking his chances at all, he looks totally lost to me

Sorry but I did think he was rubbish. De Jong carried the midfield on his back.

I was pleased when we signed him and have been hoping he would come good. He was rubbish tonight. Never got in the game.

It's a long road back from here if he's going to cut the mustard.

Maybe he'll find some form and confidence at the Euros.

A massively disappointing night. I wasn't really expecting brilliance in that particular side partnered by Matic (who was much the more influential) but I was hoping to see some light at the end of the tunnel and it didn't materialise at any point. I was hoping in that particular position he'd show willingness to get on the ball, keep things ticking over, but mostly he was anonymous.

He was against some good players in that Leicester midfield and I think we saw the difference in dynamism, authority, and probably sheer ability.
Spot on. You can blame the players around anyone all day long, but he yet again showed nothing to suggest he deserves to be starting.

Passing and moving simply isnt enough, hes not a ball winner like Fred and he does not have the imagination and vision of Bruno. What he offers is backpasses and thats simply not good enough.

Diallo who is 6 years younger showed much more promise and that says it all really.

Blimey, don’t wanna be too harsh on him but he’s an absolutely nothing footballer. Doesn’t seem to like having touches of the ball. Hides behind other players and sort of just jogs around.
Ill wait to see how he does next year because we saw how bad Fred was early doors but the signs aren’t good. For all Fred’s early shitness he never struck me as someone afraid of his own shadow.

Im happy to give him another season but if he does nothing with it then he is clearly taking Grealish's spot.

He makes a lot of really silly runs into non existent space and points half heartedly to signal where he wants it. No one actually passes to him, but it looks endearing.

He's starting to look not just like Klaassen, but a poor man's Klaassen at this point.

I said as much and people didn't believe. Just send him back, swap him for Gravenberch, who can really play. They love their own there and most likely won't say no.

Gravenbergh is quite an exciting talent, but nowhere near ready for a club like United.

It's hard to understate how easy it is to play for Ajax in the Dutch league.

Well, a deeper role...

There is no way he will be successful playing in CM role for us in EPL or anywhere else with his style and mentality.

Passing back the whole game and when it came to the defense, we were playing with only 1 in the midfield. Both he and Mata were useless.

This. Any one of us could probably go over there and do a job.
