Ajax melts trophy for fans

After an exceptional football year without supporters in the stadium, Ajax has decided to melt down its champion trophy and create over 42,000 small champion stars. From Wednesday onwards, each season ticket holder will receive their share of the champion trophy, or, as Ajax calls it: ‘a piece of Ajax’. This will allow the club to physically share the championship and the 35th trophy with fans.

General Director Edwin van der Sar: "This season, we have largely had to play without our fans. Well, without them sitting in the stands, at least. Despite this, we have felt their support every week. On the way to the stadium, on social media and in our personal contacts."

"Previously, when we said ‘this title is for you’, we were expressing how we were doing it for the fans however sharing the trophy is the ultimate proof that we really are.’ After a turbulent year, we are ensuring our fans feel part of our championship."

Playing without supporters has also been strange for the players. Ajax captain Dusan Tadic: "Playing in an empty stadium doesn’t compare with an atmospheric Johan Cruijff ArenA. We have really missed our supporters over the past season here in Amsterdam and during all our matches. We therefore want to dedicate this title to our fans and can’t wait to play in front of them again."
This season, Ajax played 30 of its 34 matches in the Eredivisie in an empty stadium. The Amsterdam team won both the Dutch Cup and the Eredivisie title.

All season ticket holders will receive a star weighing 3.45g, 0.06g of which has come from the trophy.

Why didn’t they just use scissors? Would have been far cooler if you got a bit with part of the logo or lettering.

What a bunch of melts!

But a cool gesture I must say. I’m hoping none of those 42,000 stars end up on eBay. They seem like they will be legit pieces of football memorabilia in the future.

City can't copycat them, they still have dozens of cabinets to fill in the trophies museum

As noted, only 0.06g of the actual trophy ends up in each star. You wouldn't be able to recognise such a small sliver/shaving.

The KNVB provided Ajax with another trophy to place in the trophy room.

I think its a very good gesture. Football means a ton to many fans, especially season ticket holders who would feel the biggest disconnect from covid football.

Would have been a far more powerful gesture if they melted a fan and somehow made them into the shape of a trophy to immortalise them forever.

Ajax melts fan for trophy would have sent shockwaves around the world.

Ajax > Glazers parasites

The amount of respect Ajax as a club gives their own fans speaks volumes, compared to Glazers who sees and treats United fans as consumers.

Man im so happy for the Ajax fans but also alittle jealous how good the relationship is between club and fans.

Ajax got my respect! Well done!

Its because winning the League is nothing new that they must keep the fans happy.

Never understood why they have a serving tray as a trophy. Good for stacking, I guess.
