I remember people wanted Tahith Chong at RW because he "couldn't be worse than Lingard". Makes me wonder how Tahith Chong is doing these days. He was hyped a lot back then too. Do you think Amad has surpassed Chong yet?
Easily. Better showing in the first minutes for the first team and the best player in the under 23s.

Something Chong never was to me.

Amad has technical ability. Chong doesn't.

Thought he did well yesterday given the circumstances. Hard enough for young players to step up, let alone playing in a mix and match team like that.

Had some nice touches, got an assist, worked hard off the ball, didn’t get bullied, showed confidence and willingness to show for the ball.. what more could you want from the lad.

Did well in difficult conditions, looking forward to seeing him and Greenwood making the right flank a strength next season.
You mean him and Sancho with Greenwood sharing minutes with Cavani at CF?

Would everyone be praising him if it wasn’t fit to the enormous transfer fee?
If an academy player got 1 goal and 1 Assist in their first 100 minutes while playing like that yes they would be praised.

It's impressive

While also being clearly way too good for the under 23s as well. All signs point to him being very talented.

That said, he has all the rights to hope for Dan James’ minutes next season (and perhaps one more start this season as well).

I turned off the game feeling he was rather impressive all things considered. Reading the comments on here, it appears many were expecting a lot more straightaway.

What's that based on? Performances in the youth teams?
I expected one or two dribbles or moments of brilliance, but I didn't expect him to carry that patched-together team on his back - he's very, very slight at the minute and has very little experience of senior football (has he even played up to 300 mins of senior football?). And while I'm not expecting him to grow much bigger, I'm definitely expecting him to fill out more and to get a fair bit stronger.

I think he'll start vs Wolves, the same with Elanga. There's no way we risk Bruno, Rashford etc 4 days before the final in a dead rubber.
That must have been Ole's plan I am guessing. To play Amad in a few dead rubber games with low pressure to get a taste of first XI football like he did with Greenwood at the end of 2018-19 season. I wonder if Ole has already got a good sense of how far Amad will go and can he use him as a reason for not going for Sancho?

He looks amazing technically but he's very slight and he lacks any top end speed.
Hopefully a little of that comes with a few more years growing.
Looks like it's going to be fun to watch him develop.

He wouldn't look out of place if he got more minutes with the first team. He looked technically very good as always and tidy on the ball.

We should be looking to phase him into getting the minutes Dan James currently gets.

Yeah, fair point. Clearly they could both go to the very very top of the game. I guess when I see Amad I think he could be one of those players who is incredibly skilful and gets the crowd on their feet, but like Januzaj that doesn’t always equate to being a world class footballer in terms of efficiency and end product. Not saying it won’t, just that it is by no means certain. But when I saw a very young Greenwood he just seemed like one of those players that you just KNEW would make it, and make it big. But as you say, hindsight is a wonderful thing. I once thought that Messi was an amazing talent who wouldn’t amount to much so I clearly know feck all!
Is it based on him already scoring and and assisting in about 179 minutes of playing for United's main team? Or on him scoring 4 and assisting 3 in his 3 games for our U-23?

Is he use to playing there? If so that's encouraging.
He's used to playing on the left side and even our coaches at youth level have said he's best deployed from that role. At Dortmund he had Hakimi behind him who was the right winger for the club and since he left they've fallen away a little even after adding Haaland.. He's (Sancho) naturally right footed and is best suited to playing from the left as a inverted wide forward in the game today. And his two goals in his last game against RB Leipzig further demonstrate why he should be deployed in the role which best suits him.

Good to know. Thanks for the explanation.

I must have been watching a different match than some, I was very impressed with him

Great close control, he is obviously slight but he shapes his body very well to receive the ball and his press in the first half was the main reason we had a spell where we looked the better team.

In a game that was a thrown together team I thought he looked quite promising. Wasn’t spectacular but he was just solid and made a lot of the right choices and worked for the team. How often have we seen Rashford or Greenwood find themselves in the position he did and try to work a shot when there are better options.

The one thing that really stood out to me in that Liverpool game was the passing decisions he made and he continued making smart choices in this game which to me shows there is a lot more to come.
Probably needs to feature in a game where we have far more control to really show what he can do.

Well done Amad. Yes he's raw and not the Messi people hyped him up to be. But for me we have room in this squad for an interesting young Winger who has technical quality and age on his side.

I just find it weird that you’re making this kind of assumption while he’s been either simply productive or insanely productive on every level that he has played so far.

He has 1G + 1A in 178 minutes he played. Did you expect more? Then give him more game time - so far Amad is doing well, and if Ole entirely discontinues usage of Dan James in the future (giving all James’ minutes to Amad) the team will benefit even more.

I keep saying this Messi thing purely because of how mental the caf went when we signed him, as if he was going to walk in and get 50 goals and assists this season. It was all a bit laughable. Cryuff, Messi etc all in one.

Problem is since he's gone many have gone the opposite way - not ready for this level etc

Truth is that he's a very talented young winger and let's treat him as just that.

I’m pretty sure most people were just joking about the Messi thing initially

The Messi comparison was made by one of his team mates at Atalanta and not by any of our fans. When a player signs for a club with our massive fanbase, then there will be expectations, which is normal.

Yeah, like Pellistri? They were a bit much that's all. As has been proven clearly.

Pellistri was never supposed to be as Talented as Amad in fairness.

I watched his clips and under 23 games and say someone who could maybe develop into being good enough

With Amad it's more than likely that he will become a quite good player baring injury or lack of effort etc.

Pellistri wasn't as hyped, eventhough he was considered a talent in Uruguay. And regarding Amad, his hype was for his performances at youth level in Italy. So nothing has been proven one way or the other.

He will have learned more from that than we did. He's got all the tools to be very good for us, but needs easing in to get up to speed with the first team game. We already knew that. I was surprised by his defensive contribution tbh. Pressed well, and happy to have a nibble despite the physical disadvantage. Stole possession a couple of times. That alone makes him less of a risk to bring in.

My main worry with him is his strength under pressure. Hits the floor at the speed of light instead of tumbling over. Really highlights that he's a bit lightweight for this level.

Can understand those thinking a loan would be good, but he could be brought in slowly much like how Greenwood was imo. The biggest barrier is the players above him in the pecking order (Mata, James...) and what happens with them in the close season. There's been one option too many in front of him, and games have been tight or against dirty sides like Burnley or Granada.

but we could compare him with what we’ve seen from Gomes and Chong previously. Amad is miles better for the senior team and can already be a useful off the bench player

He looks tidy on the ball but short of understanding how to play in English football. It's a massive ask, we are talking about not only a player that has to transition to our football but also that has very limited experience in senior football in general. Throw in a transfer tag that creates some expectancy and it is not the easiest start for him. I think it will take a few years to develop his experience, awareness, physicality to a point where he's a consistently useful player for us. I am guessing we consider him to be a pretty unique talent but there is a lot of work to do to unlock that.

I agree.

If you're old enough to remember, Ronaldo after making his debut in 2003, had many games where he used to get criticized for his poor showings, and many on here were even happy to swap him for Aaron Lennon or sell him to Valencia for £20m. But the difference was, that Fergie kept the faith and kept playing him and he finally repaid the faith in a big way.

I'm not saying Amad will replicate what Ronaldo did, but what we can learn from what happened with Ronaldo is not to be too judgemental too early. Because if it was upto our fans, Ronaldo would've been shipped off a few years into his United career.

It would be amazing for him for but he’d probably get kicked to bits. He looks like he could get really hurt in the men’s game…
Hannibal Mejbri is getting the shit kicked out of him by u-23 players and has zero protection from referees. A loan to the championship would mean at least the referees have to be professional about things.

Needed a midfielder like Mejbri who understands and plays 1-2 link up football and pass and move. As a winger you’re entirely reliant on the midfield to get you the ball

Had a really good showing yesterday. I felt he had a first touch like Lukaku...hope he gets more game time.
