Was the Indian leader prior to Modi revered in such an apparent fashion as he is?
Nope, at this point I don't think there's ever been an elected leader with this kind of fanboism behind him. At least not on the national level. There may have been a few state level leaders.

Maybe a certain German dictator had this kind of fanboism

Urgh. Not surprised, look at the charges for ambulances these days. Country shows its colours.

Not in recent times. Maybe back in the day.

This has been the perfect storm for the fanatical right. Growth of 24 hour news media led to a huge anti incumbency sentiment in the country due to corruption and it allowed a narrative of Modi as charming, crowd pleasing, Hindu value loving, development man. This was a great front as people were looking for a "personality" and found in him their fascination. That clubbed with the same systematic abuse of institutions as you've seen the US - namely misinformation - has only seen BJP tighten their grip over the masses by upping the ante on relgious hatred, bigotry and painting the majority as a victim and minority as a villain. Where it's different from the US is that our A) institutions are wank (they have huge control over the media as a mouthpiece) and can't keep a mental in order, rather allowing him to toy over them like a fascist overlord, and B) we suffer in times like these from a multi party system where parity is roughly always maintained as it is in the US

So we've now got this Dear Leader figure/party (Modi is the face the movement is much bigger) that's got its claws all over the country and is changing its fabric. Filth, bigotry, playing the Hindu majority is the priority. Development charm was the charade.

If you think about it, our situation is similar to current day Arsenal.

Bullied the earlier manager in charge . While he deserved to go, he was doing a decent job. The new guy was hyped up by journalists before he even started and they doubled down on his abilities for some reason. Now, despite the new guy clearly not working out, journos are afraid of questioning him because it would make them look like idiots. And for that reason, the only thing that media talks about is their hair

RSS worker Modi followed on Twitter dies of Covid. PM didn’t help despite plea tweet, family cries
Amit Jaiswal's family hoped Modi would 'intervene' after they posted a tweet from his account, tagging the PM & CM Yogi, and said they were 'facing issues' regarding his treatment.

Amit Jaiswal went to Ayodhya in December 2020 to pray at the under-construction Ram Mandir site | Photo by special arrangement

Apologies on shaming a dead person, but posting this to highlight how stupid fanboism is destroying this country. (Swipe thru the slides)

Can someone help me out with this? I was wondering what the religion wise breakdown of the Indian population was in 1947 before independence, or during the 1941 census. Mainly the percentage of those following Islam. Also when India was partitioned what percentage of the total land area was given to Pakistan (east and west combined). Have tried looking for it on the internet but couldn't find anything substantial.

I'd say around 30% as a rough ball park figure. India's first census was in 1951, earlier records are sketchy. As far as land area is concerned you can look up the current area of India, pakistan and bangladesh and calculate how much percentage the latter two comprised in undivided India.

Edit:-
India: 32,87,263 km
Pakistan: 8,81,913 km
Bangladesh: 1,47,610 km
Total undivided India: 43,16,786 km
Total of pakistan and bangladesh: 10,29,523 km
Percentage of pakistan and bangldesh in undivided India: 23.84%

Thanks. The only source reliable source regarding the population must then be the 1941 census conducted by the British. I will try and decipher that then and see if I can find what I am looking for.

I think in that census they've bifurcated the dalit and tribal population from the upper caste and obc hindus. There's no way to know the percentage of hindus and muslims in this dalit/tribal category although you can assume the majority will be hindu.

I'm sure Muslim portion has gone up given we get WhatsApp messages all the time asking Hindus to panic. But it's more to do with inequality and population growth that arises out of that. Poverty breeds more erm breeding.

I did see that they had a record of Muslims, whether it was complete or did they miss out on dalit/tribal muslims is something I will have to verify. But yeah majority would be Hindus either way.

Sure. I just keep hearing from immediate family how Pakistan was given much more land then they should have been on the basis of population, so wondering if it's true or just another right wing propoganda.

I'm not surprised people continue to hold silly grudges like that. Given more land they deserved. People need to move on  (not referring to you)

It's just a part of the theory that Congress has been an Islamic party since before Independence and still are. Only the BJP can save Hindus from further loss of land.

I mean, it's all rubbish. That's how they 'win' Hindu hearts as they have nothing else. By telling us Hindus the privileges we've had over the decades were actually such a pain we had to endure.

Wonder what they make of the recent "standoff " involving China

I'm referring to Modi's beard which has been the subject of a lot of discussions on our media channels in the past year.

Apparently, Pakistan is scared to Modi's beard, if that makes any sense
