Really poor tonight, Ole has to think long and hard about what he does in the summer regarding the goalkeeper.

Couldn't believe the Salah goal. No keeper does that.

Rush out and if Salah finishes past you, fair enough, he's a good finisher. Don't just stand on the line and give him the entire goal to slot it into.
Yeah exactly the first thing I thought before I immediately turned the TV off.

I have no idea wtf he was doing, might as well have been a complete empty net for Salah.

He’s only really better than De Gea at one thing; rushing out to sweep behind the defence when they’re pushing up.

I don’t want to minimize it, it is super important for teams that want to press which means playing a high defensive line.

But generally, I think David is the better keeper, with a higher average performance, albeit with the occasional bad game. Neither is perfect.

People need to understand that no gk is perfect every game. Hendo organises the back 4 better and is an excellent gk - no doubt. But today the defence in front was a shambles and this influenced the CM and the Gk. Tuns out that DDG is a better shot stopper than Hendo, also has almost a decade of more experience than Hendo.

We have to now bring in a cb who can swap the same position as Maguire and strengthen the defence. Bailiy is nuts with Lindeloff and Maguire. Maybe with Tuanzebe is his best spot?.

He's definitely better at claiming crosses in open play too. So essentially between that and sweeping he generally prevents more chances from occurring than De Gea does, which is a firm plus in his favour.

The question is the rest of his game. I know statistically he's actually fared better than De Gea in terms of shot-stopping over the last two seasons but watching them play it's evident that De Gea is at least a far more gifted shot-stopper, even now.

If De Gea anywhere near his best then I don't think this would even be a contest, even with the flaws people complain about. But his best has been a while gone.....

Dean is a very decent keeper, but De Gea is clearly superior. We may need to take a step backward with the keeper position in the short run in order to reap gains in the long run, but I do hope caftards are prepared to accept that we'll be downshifting at keeper for a season or two if we jettison De Gea for Henderson this summer.

Feet up at home.
I'm really disappointed with him this season.

I thought it was all set up for him but this mental confidence everyone talks about seems absent.

We won’t challenge for the title with him as goalkeeper. I’m sorry for all the Deano lovers here, but even Sergio Romero is much better than him.

Is this not more evident then? Are we looking for someone whom is marginally worse or better than De Gea. Ideally we want someone to be just as good as him, in their pomp.

Yeah we could do with a prime Rio and Keane as well while you’re at it. Deano at fault for 1 goal and getting pulled to bits. Daves made plenty of mistakes this season, he’s been rightfully replaced as starting no1 in the league. He played well against Roma and we still conceded 3.

Feel like he should have done much better with 4th goals. 3 is arguable as it was very powerful shots and come off as rebound. If it was De Gea, they could create big chances that De Gea won't come off the line to clear and would be likely to score as result. There were 3-4 time I think Dean Henderson came off to deal with a high ball over the defence.

Deano is still my number 1.

De Gea is the better keeper by a mile.

De Gea makes mistakes - yes. Henderson doesn't even seem to have some of the basics down pat (narrowing the angles in 1 on 1s - not just yesterday's game). Unacceptable.

Not having the commanding presence of Maguire in defense made all our defenders and GK and midfield look like horseshit. Similar to how Liverpool turned to shit for a while when they lost VVD.

Henderson is young and will improve. Whether he can be a long term Man Utd GK, I'm not so sure. But he's a solid keeper who will see better days. Signing a top center back will help a lot.

This. Maguire is such a presence back there. I'm not entirely sold on Henderson (and it'd be weird if anyone was at this point - he's got a lot to prove), but his ability to command and charge out is refreshing. He really fluffed it on their final goal, though. Where the feck was he?!

He's not that young - he's 24 - and progression isn't linear.

Joe Hart peaked at 25 and went on a steady, then sharp, downhill slide. There's plenty of keepers who've had similar career paths. Obviously plenty in the opposite category too.

I see nothing special in Henderson. He doesn't have a single outstanding attribute and he's undersized to boot.

As mentioned above, he barely even does the basics right. The 'palm directly back into danger' routine has been a goal begging to happen all season.

Edit - For all the hype about his sweeping, his distribution is well below average too. So many times this season, even with our first choice defence, he's put us in a lot of trouble against pressing teams with badly weighted or badly judged passes that invite pressure. The one vs Sheffield United was the most memorable...gave Maguire no realistic out-ball other than back to the keeper. He did similar tonight with Lindelof for their 3rd goal against a Liverpool team clearly in good pressing positions.

Just generally creates way too many heart-in-mouth moments with the ball...I think a big part of it is down to him not having a consistent clipped pass out to the full-backs in his locker. That's one area that De Gea's actually pretty decent.

Imagine if he’d made the mistake his opposite number did at the start of the game, thread would be slating him. Alison was best keeper in the league previous 2 seasons had lots of errors this season. Keepers all make errors. Our defence looks more assured with Henderson in than it does without him. Time will tell if he’s a good bet for a long term starter, but I don’t see anything that says it should be De Gea.

Time to dust off Romero and remove all of the cobwebs he's been collecting these past few seasons. He's our No.1 now until we can buy someone who isn't an embarrassing clown.

His contract runs out in about 6 weeks, so good luck with that!

The simple answer is to keep De Gea as the undisputed #1 and Henderson as the backup. If after next season this is not acceptable to Henderson he can go to a club like West Ham or some other upper half PL club and have a perfectly respectable career.

But if De Gea demands to leave -- and by now he's earned the right to do what we wants -- we better come up with a better idea than Henderson as our first choice keeper. He's a solid keeper, but it's hard to see him ever becoming an elite keeper.

Sure he made mistakes and was bobbins yesterday but just last few weeks there were talks how he makes the defense calmer. No point on giving up on him so fast, he's young for a keeper so every now and then he'll make a mistake. Obviously club is glinting counting on him and all this talk of getting rid of him already or about Romero is a bit ridiculous.

It feels like it’s designed primarily to move de Gea on. Henderson is ok as a stop gap and May improve but I dont think he’s the long term solution.

that 4th goal was crazy

I might be wrong, but i thought he was dodgy for goal number two as well. He's essentially crouching when odds are that the ball is going to be aimed high and not low.

100% wrong, the ball into Firmino was fantastic and the header was unstoppable.

I'd be critical of the punch on the first goal, and the positioning for the fourth. Other than that I thought he was fine yesterday, he came and cleared a few balls De Gea wouldn't have been interested in. Having said that the fourth was Karius standard of feck up and added that to the horrible one he let through his hands earlier in the season I'd be inclined to agree with the rest of the forum now. De Gea back in net for the last three games for me.

He's completely blown his chance for me. I now believe we need a new keeper to throw into the mix as well.

Other than that he was fine? The third goal was a shocker from him as well!

He is just a bit shit in all honesty.

As someone said recently, strong Joe Hart vibes from him, at least in the way he carries himself. Hopefully that’s the end of the comparison. But there are definitely plenty of weaknesses there to work on.

It has nothing to do with the pass to Firminio or the quality of the header, but how Henderson has positioned himself. Why is he essentially crouching.

Oh, and the third is most def a feck up from Henderson, he clears it straight to Firmino from a shot straight at him which he should either be capable of holding or deflecting out for a corner.

So he’s better at organising the defence, but in this game, when it was particularly important to organise the defence, he’s totally blameless for the defence being disorganised? Either he benefits from the defence organising itself, or he failed to do his usual job of organising the defence this time...it can’t be both.

Yup.

I really, really want Henderson to be good enough. You see a kid who has grown up with United, been in the crowd with the fans for some big nights, you want them to live the dream we all had as kids. So far though...He's good but he is not looking like he'll ever be great. Maybe, if we actually strengthen in defence and midfield, that will be enough? However, beyond being more willing to come for crosses than De Gea I don't think there's a real comparison between the two. That fourth goal was particularly bizarre, given how willing Henderson has been to come off his line at other times.
