The more I watch Kounde (in actual games for Sevilla) I do not want him. Don’t get me wrong he’s a good defender but he’ll be physically bullied in the premier league. And his height has already been mentioned many times, regardless of how good his anticipation or jumping is I’m not confident with him going in for a header against some big striker.

We cannot afford to get it wrong for our centre back position as we have too many duds.

You could imagine Chris Woods, for example, smacking him around all over the place. Agree that, whilst he is obviously talented, he may not be the best fit.

I've been having a lot of trouble 'finding' the right CB, the one we all agree we need. I think we have two ways to go here:

a) A young CB with huge potential: Botman, Badiashile, Tapsoba, Gvardiol, Zagadou are the names that first come to my mind. He will be coming as a 4th choice with an eye on the future, expectedly hungry to stake a claim. We will have the same CB pairing next season, which doesn't sound good at all.

b) An acomplished performer of the highest level: Varane, Marquinhos, Romagnoli, Koulibaly. This second option would be the most impactful in the short term and could take us to the next level, but unfortunately I don't see it happening, given the current squad.

any of which should include Jones' exit. Please.

Yeah I am firmly in the option B camp and would take any of those to partner Harry

I'd love us to sign Marqhinhos, but would then play him as a CDM! I would also be worried if we signed Romagnoli or Koulibaly.

Varane could be excellent for a few years. Or he could be like Di Maria and flop completely.

Yeah no way will PSG let Marquinhos go and is probably the only one of those I would actually take over Varane. I think the Koulibaly ship sailed when Jose was sacked but will be honest know little about Romagnoli as don't watch much Serie A

I agree with both. Leaves us with Varane which is not an easy call itself, as mentioned above. Biggest question is what is Ole going to do here.

Given nobody is able to arrive at that one perfect option for us at CB I wonder if Liverpool have got the best of the lot in Konate yet again. Would be an utter shame for him to form a great partnerships with VVD and us to keep floundering in that position next few years

Why is nobody talking of Ezri Konsa of Aston Villa, he's 23 years old seems to be improving since his debut, when we played them recently i thought he did very well, Good on the ball, wins his fair share of Arial duals... I've been Impressed of him whenever I've seen him play.

Anyone got more details on how Sven Bottman measures up. Looks good in the clips ive seen. Obviously these can be misleading. Anyone watched him regularly this season?
Absolutely not good enough, he wasn't even good enough for Ajax.

He doesn't fit the profile of a fast defender who can stop counter attacks or is comfortable with the ball. He might do fine at his current club, but it's not a player for United

Yeah same with me, unfortunately. But I am just going to be biased against Serie A and assume based on nothing more than that, that Romagnoli isn't good enough.

And yeah Marquinhos is a pipe dream but it would be perfect! He is so good at CDM and CB, and is passible as a RB.

I thought he looked good as well, but haven't really watched much of him apart from games against United.

And, while I am not advocating for signing him, I think that Tyrone Mings makes his CB partners look good. Tuanzabe looked solid next to Mings, for example.

Looks like a mean bastard , typical Argie CD. If he is half as good as Ruggeri he will do.
A mean bastard and he's very good on the ball. ~But only now I realized he's on loan from Juve. Nevermind then. They need center backs

He's on loan from Juventus but Atalanta have the option to sign him for €16m and will be taking up that option according to Fabrizio Romano.

Juve must be crying after the fantastic season Romero did. I watched a fair share of games of Atalanta, they are a very exciting team to watch.

He seems like a defender who loves defending and would put his head where others wouldn't put their foot. Seems like a very brave type.

And if I'm not mistaken, @mazhar13 also likes him.
That's right. I really, really do enjoy watching him. He was catching my eye whilst playing for Genoa, and he's really kicked on since then. I think that his value will rise if Atalanta continue to do well in both Serie A and Europe.

EDIT: The highlight videos & compilations on YouTube do Romero no justice. He's much more than some blood-and-thunder defender.

He's at a good age too, at 23, and it's reported Atalanta will sell him for €40m which is about £34m.

That's after they trigger his cheap purchase option, of course, but yeah, I'd hope that we'd be in for him especially given how far ahead he already is in his development compared to most young centre backs.

I don't think Juventus expected him to step up the way they did. At Genoa, he had a more limited defensive role and was more focused on clearing balls out of the box as well as stopping shots on goal. At Atalanta, though, he's done way more than just those two things and really showed what he's capable of.

I posted these in the Transfer Tweets thread, but I think it's appropriate for me to post this here:
Other than what's already been mentioned, I can say that he's probably been the best defender in Serie A this season. He was showing potential last season with Genoa, but this season, he's showing what he's all about with Atalanta. I'm surprised that he's not getting more coverage because I can't think of another defender who's been as good as him this season.

He's been the leader of the Atalanta's back 3 at the age of 23. Despite playing beside two not so good defenders, he's been able to hold his own against the various attacking threats that he's had to face. He reads the game very well, puts in strong yet well-timed tackles frequently, and is a very difficult player to get past. His positioning's probably the best out of all defenders in the Serie A, and that's among the likes of Koulibaly, Romagnoli, de Ligt, Chiellini, de Vrij, etc. With someone of his ilk, one would think that he's probably not as physically gifted as some of the other defenders, but that's not the case here. He may not be very tall (1.85m), but he's quick and surprisingly strong, which explains why he's so tough to get past.

His only weakness, and this is a slight one, is that he occasionally tends to get drawn towards the ball, but that only happens when he's dealing with multiple threats by himself. Instead of containing all of the other threats, he sometimes chooses to go in to win the ball out of his faith in his recovery powers and quickness. Keep in mind that he does play in a back 3 in Serie A, and defenders there tend to trust their teammates more than defenders in other leagues. Currently, as Atalanta play a back 4 against Benevento (who are capable of scoring multiple goals), Romero's holding his own, so it's not like he's only good in a back 3 (he also played in a back 4 with Genoa on several occasions).
His aerial prowess doesn't stick out, but it's not a weakness. He mostly uses his good positioning and sense of awareness for his aerial battles to make up for his lack of size.

EDIT: Overall, I rate him very, very highly, and I'd be ecstatic if United were to actually sign him up.
At Genoa, he was dealing with lots of crosses into the box and had to contend in aerial battles way more than he has with Atalanta.

I guess the reason they accept a low fee is because Romero could refuse to accept a move to them if not? I mean, even if Juve have to accept the fee, he dont.

I have not seen him play much at all, but he has mostly played with three at the back at Atalanta. Same at Genoa. I would think that we would consider that a risk in our assessment of him. Statistically he also appear to create alot of fouls...

It is a bit annoying, but the more I see from most of the CBs we are linked with, the less convinced I get.

I've never seen him play so I can't really say alot about him apart from the highlights on YouTube. But it's a position along with midfield I hope we strengthen with players who are good defensively but also good offensively which IMO is very important if we want to progress as a team.

I think what caught my eye the most was his proactivity. A top club defender must always be proactive, top clubs defend in high lines (well, not Mourinho clubs :D ) and when you need to lock the opposition in their half, you need proactive defenders so we can stop the counter as fast as we can.

I think him and Maguire would balance themselves well: Maguire more positional, more confortable arround the box, Romero always ready to cover the holes as he does very well at Atalanta.

Tapsoba is the one that I really want to see more of. He has ridiculously good stats (both on the ball and defensively) and the one match I did watch him he was impressive. I just need to try to watch more of Bayer Leverkusen but the end of the season is already here.

Has all the attributes, built like an outhouse, good in the air, fast, composed, good passing ability. Sounds like the kind of defender Ole is chasing. Zero links to United thus far though.

I'll concur with what @Scholsey2004 said: he is best in 1-on-1 situations and when he's on the ball. In every other case, he's pretty weak, and that's why I don't find him to be good enough.

There's the argument that if we had a powerful, dominant CB duo, then we could afford to play Pogba in a double pivot, because his defensive issues would've been compensated by our world class defence.

His stats in the air are actually pretty good as well. We're talking about a 21 year old defender whos an ever present in a team thats on the verge of finishing ahead of PSG in whats supposedly a one horse race. I think theres enough evidence of his potential there. 22 goals conceded in 37 games is nothing to sniff at.

No doubt there's potential, but he won't be as complete a defender as the likes of de Ligt, Romero, or Konaté. From what I've seen, he can become a good stopper who'll put in the tackles and win the ball, whilst his height will give him some aerial presence, but I won't expect him to contain counterattacks or deal with multiple threats. In a team that plays a high line and dominates the ball, he can be quite good, but he'll then look vulnerable when he has to deal with multiple attacks.

Lille have been one of the more dominant sides in Ligue 1, and whenever they've been under defensive pressure, José Fonte does a good job of reducing it. Galtier also tends to get more defensive and moves the back line deeper when his team gets put under pressure, offering more support to Botman. In contrast, Romero tends to defend larger areas and handle multiple threats by virtue of Atalanta's pressing game.

The right CB is a conundrum. Do we want:

A bruising tackler and clearer of aerial threats in the mold of Vidic?
An elegant reader of danger and passer of the ball in the mold of Rio?
The polished gem such as Varage?
A promising up-and-comer such as Kande?

You see i dont really rate Romero. Hes a few inches shorter than id prefer and his tackling never looks very clean. I can see him picking up a hell of a lot of bookings.

Despite being short, he's been better in the air than you'd expect. I've rarely seen him be troubled in aerial battles. His tackling definitely needs work, particularly since he tends to throw himself in rather than take a more measured approach, but he's still developing, and tackling is something that one can improve over time.
