Interesting that Whitwell didn't talk about Pogba in that article so obviously thinks he either signs a new deal (unlikely) or just stays next season and runs his contract down then leaves as a free agent
There has been nothing in Marca that would suggest Pogba is on Real Madrid's list for this summer. Marca's accuracy on Real Madrid transfers is incredible compared to any United source of info. If he runs down his contract and keeps his salary demands on the low side, then they might be interested in summer 2022. We can be fairly certain that Pogba wants to join Real Madrid, given all the comments from his brother. Most of the Juventus articles either assume a player swap or that Juventus will be able to sell unwanted players, without explaining who has the funds to buy them.

Obviously a lot of the focus is on who might come in but that will at least partially dictated by our outgoings.

So who do you think should be sold/let go to cut wages, raise funds and free up squad space? And who do you think will be sold/let go?

Apologies if there's already a thread for this I didn't see.
Romero, Rojo, Jones, Matic, Andreas Pereira, Mata, Lingard should leave or be sold. Williams, Mengi should be loaned out.

To my mind the players who leave permanently will be some but not necessarily all of De Gea, Lingard, Matic, Mata, Jones, Pereira, Dalot and Romero.

I don't buy for a second that the like of VDB and James will be going anywhere.

As for who else I'd like to go, I'd be fine with Martial leaving if it made sense financially and we were buying a CF. But I think it's unlikely.

Loads of us have a list of 10, or so, players we'd like to leave. That's not going to happen because no one is buying. Possible are part-exchange deals, one or two players being sold, the majority those you'd like to leave will go out on loan. Smalling did well during his loan last season so was sold; Lingard did well this season, so is likely to be sold.

Very unrealistic for one window but I think these would be the right moves to make for the players in question. The final cull of the squad, only the strong survive.

Sold or released:
  • Henderson or De Gea - pick your no.1 and make bank off the no.2
  • Romero
  • Dalot
  • Jones
  • Matic
  • Mata
  • Pereira
  • Lingard
  • James
  • Chong
Loan:
  • Williams
  • Laird
  • Garner
  • Pellistri
These are the ones in question. I don't get why we want to keep Mata, who barely plays.
As you said it will be really hard to see them all moved in one window. But of those in the sold/released list, the must go are: Jones, Pereira, Romero, Dalot.

You can't sell Romero or Mata as their contracts are expiring and you can't even release Rojo seeing as he isn't our player and has not been for several months
What part of the phrase "should leave" do you not understand? The only thing you have a right to laugh about is Rojo. The rest are just exposing your folly.

Sell - pogba, martial, lingard, mata, matic, dalot, pereira, Jones, Romero, James, Chong

200million there, to reinvest in the squad on top of the already placed budget.

could potentially give us 300/350million to spend on squad.

get grealish - 90mil. Sancho - 80, ings- 20mil, rice - 70mil and a centre back 50/60mil, trippier -15mil, ings 20mil back up for Cavani

might sound like I’m playing football manager but all these players are gettable for the right price. We just have to pay it.

Cavani, grealish, Bruno, sancho, Greenwood, rashford, Ings and amad would give us possibly the best attack in Europe? Name one defence in world football that would cope with that...

Someone like varane next to maguire, trippier to push and rotate with AWB and rice sat infront of them, we win trophies!

sounds ALOT but how do we catch city if we don’t do this type of business? We have to go big.
In which currency? Because it's not in pounds.

Yes we have spent big BUT on the wrong players! It is the summer to go big, we need proven players now to bridge the gap. We have youth, we have potential, we’re the closest we have been.. now is the time to get those proven players In who will make the big jump between us being a runner up and a PL winning side.

I say ings because he will be reasonably cheap and he is fairly decent as a back up for Cavani. Get the world class striker next summer when the rest of the unbalance and BS is sorted.

This Summer transfer window is the biggest since fergie era, don’t care what you say!

get sancho, grealish, rice, varane, tripper and ings and we compete.

Juventus seems an obvious one.
Inter Milan.
PSG.
I suppose - but Navas has just signed a new deal with PSG.

De Gea currently earns £140k more than Inter's highest earner (Eriksen).

And Juve are in a financial crisis, trying to get Ronaldo off their books.

I don't think it's straightforward - and he's not been linked with anyone lately.

Is this a joke? Not only is he an ex-scouse bastard, but he is no where near the level we should be expecting.

Also; "We have to go big.". Really? Like we have been for the past 7-8 years now? Falcao, Di Maria, Depay, Martial, Mkhitaryan, Mata (at the time a big player), Pogba, Lukaku and Sanchez... I think it's painfully clear that "going big" isn't the approach we need.
we really do, we have the potential players, youth.. we have the foundation to be a very good team.. we have to make the right signings this summer and it won’t come cheap.

Some comical posts indeed. As if we're gonna buy Kane, Sancho, Rice and Varane this summer

I think Pogba will stay and then leave on a free, because I think Madrid and PSG have other priorities. Juventus love a free transfer, and have probably told Pogba to wait 1 more year and then they'll pay him the €400,000+ a week he will demand.

If I were James I'd ask to leave. Can't see why he should play when Rashford Sancho(if) Martial and Pogba are all better than him on the left

DDG - 30 million
Romero -10 million
Grant - Released
Jones - Released
Dalot - 20 million
Mata - Released
Pereira - 15 million
Matic - Released
Martial - 30 million
Chong - 10 million

Thats one Sancho and one Danny Ings. Wont happen though
Selling martial for £30 million would be criminally poor.

Because the question is should and not would, I can come up with a big list

Mata - Done here. Not even getting called up.
Matic. Again, done here.
Jones - Cancel that contract and pay compensation. He is done here.
Martial - He has shown and we have seen everything that has to be seen. He is young and has loads of talent, but his attitude is going to be the same year over year. He may improve every now and then, but I think we have been seen enough.
Lingard - Ya. He had something of a purple patch on loan, but I think it is not working out for him.
Williams - He may have some talents, but not at the levels we want. Should easily be bye bye.
Pereira - Once again. there is not much left to see. Time to move on to the current crop coming up from academy.
Dalot - Non- English football seems to suit him better

I may be forgetting many loanees.

One that I can't decide is Pogba. He is obviously a good player, useful and improves the team. He is pretty much better than everyone bar Bruno. But after how last many years have gone by, I am pretty sure all this hunky dory stuff will be short lived. If we give him loads of money and big contract, it will be back to occasional good form and then frustration and noise from his agent and French team.

Obviously, we cant get rid of them all in one go or maybe we can.

First team players Fred & Pogba.

Fred is crap and Pogba can't be trusted to play centrally, so he's being shoe horned in out wide. After that - James, Romero, Lingard, Jones, Bailly, Chong, Perreira, Matic, Mata , Dalot, De Gea would be my picks to go.

Could make the guts of 200m there and your only losing 2 real first team players.

Then sign 5 decent players and leave space for a couple of the younger players to fill in as back up if needed.
Would agree with most of that on what we SHOULD do. I would personally keep DeGea though purely as I dont think Henderson has shown enough to justify him being ready, DeGea should be numbe rone with opportunities for Henderson. Not sure he is actually good enough....young, good loan and bougth up through the club isnt reason enough. I would sell VDB though.

As for who WILL leave.....Romero, Lingard, Chong Perreira, Dalot and possibly Mata and Matic is realistic....and brings in more like £50m.....in One marquee signings, two small ones....not enough in or out, 12 months later talk of progress again and talk of us needing to stregnthen 3 positions and the never ending what do we need continues

The problem with selling players in our position is that they only then add to the list of positions we then need to buy for. Realistically the 6 players we can let leave this summer without worrying about replacing them are

Romero - out of contract, been back in South America all season anyway
Mata - out of contract, his minutes will likely go to VDB here on out
Andreas - he's been out on loan all season and not been missed
Lingard - he's been out on loan for half a season and not been missed
Jones - obviously
Grant - retiring?

Other players you would let go would be

Williams/Dalot - you can't allow both to leave without signing a replacement though. Williams needs to go for the sake of his career even if it's only a loan for a season. Dalot's had a seemingly successful loan in Milan who may want to keep him
De Gea/Henderson - one will leave meaning a number 2 needs to be signed, is that Heaton on a free and if so are we ok with him potentially being number 1 in case of an injury?
Matic - his legs have gone but he's still an option, let him go and you're relying on McFred to play twice a week for the entire season

Then you have the academy players who all need to go out on loan

Garner - Forest for a full season
Mengi - Derby
Levitt - somewhere
Laird - somewhere
Pellistri - somewhere

That's a lot of players potentially leaving the club but in reality it's never that many that actually do
Reasonable response.

I'd argue against De Gea, Lingard and Garner leaving as musts.

Garner should be eased into Matic's role in the team, at which point Matic can leave.

I think GK rotation can continue as I don't see a decent offer coming in for De Gea. Also the cost of De Gea versus cost/time replacing him isn't so dissimilar.

Lingard, could cover Bruno better than vdb. But also reluctant to strengthen a prem. team other than for a high fee or decent exchange.

This is all hypothetical and of course, I don't expect this to happen ( particularly not in one summer window ) but here is my list of the players that I can see possibly leaving the club.

Should go:

  • ‌Andrea Pereira - never good enough, had his chance, market value ~ £10m, wage: £49,000 p/w
  • ‌Diogo Dalot - decent spell at Milan, but Ole simply doesn't trust him, market value ~ £10m, wage: £34,000 p/w
  • ‌Jesse Lingard - great spell at Hammers can possibly earn him a move, solid player but entering last year of the contract, market value: ~ £15m, wage: £75,000 p/w
  • ‌TFM - 23 years old and still don't know what is his best position, market value: ~ £4m, wage: £22,000 p/w
  • ‌Phil Jones - no explanation needed, market value: 0, wage: £110,000 p/w
  • ‌Sergio Romero - a great servant to the club, but time to go somewhere and actually play before retirement, market value: 0, wage: £68,000 p/w
  • ‌Lee Grant - too old for this sh*t, retirement, market value: 0, wage: £30,000 p/w
  • ‌Juan Mata - lovely fella, gave us some moments of magic, but no need to extend his contract, market value: 0, wage: £135,000 p/w
  • ‌Nemanja Matic - legs gone, could still do a job in less dynamic leagues, market value: ~ £10m, wage: £120,000 p/w

Transfer fees: ~ £49m
Wages: ~ £33.4m p/a
_______________________
Total: ~ £82.4m

Could possibly go:

  • ‌David De Gea: neither of Dean or him would be happy to be no.2 and given his ridiculous wages I would rather let go De Gea than Henderson, market value: ~ £30m, wage: £350,000 p/w
  • ‌Paul Pogba: one of our star players, but if he is not gonna commit himself and sign a new contract I could see him leave before his contract expires, market value: ~ £30m, wage: £290,000 p/w
  • ‌Anthony Martial: disappointing season, maybe at least possible to go but he has been too inconsistent to justify his wages, still skillful and talented player, market value: ~ £40m, wage: £180,000 p/w

Transfer fees: ~ £100m
Wages: ~ £42.6m p/a
_______________________
Total: ~ £142.6m

I know that every club has its own deadwood but this shows to me how poorly this club has been run and that these resources ( approximately £225m ) could be reallocated to either strengthen the first team or, for example, to improve facilities.

Re the goalkeeper position; many are saying either DDG or Henderson have to leave, plus Romero on a free, Pareira and Grant retiring.

another position we will end up short.

so we will need a number 2 and a number 3 if all that lot leave

in which case Heston if he signs becomes number 2 (is he good enough?) and a kid number 3? Or can we bring in someone like Ben foster as number 3

or could we convince Romero to stay for number 2?

You pay 85m for your top priority Sancho and then don’t pay him. How are you Jose, looking forward to Rome?

Its surprising that despite having seemingly cleared out a fair bit of deadwood, there is still so much to go.

Definitely Should Leave
Pereira
Lingard
Matic
Jones
Mata
Dalot
One of DDG/Henderson
(Romero)
(Grant)

Out on Loan
Williams
James
Diallo?
VDB?

Also Potential Leavers
Pogba
Martial
VDB
Chong
Fred

That is a lot of potential space in the squad. I would certainly like to see some of the youngsters given a chance - Laird, Garner etc - but realistically we cannot being relying on them to play a major part.

Have lost track on whether the likes of Rojo & Pereira are out on loan, or whether we've shifted them.

Those 2 if we still have them, Mata about 4 years later than we should have, and that's probably it for the definites.

Jones is unshiftable for another couple of years.
Matic will be here at least another year.

Juventus seems an obvious one.
Inter Milan.
PSG.
PSG just extended Navas, Inter won't pay DDG 350k a week and pay us a fee & finally Juve will, if anything, take Donnarumma on a free transfer this window. DDG won't be sold, nobody can afford the deal and we'd be selling our best goalkeeper. Henderson on the other hand could fetch 30-40m and many clubs could afford his wages after giving us a fee.

DDG won't be going somewhere that pays him the same. I don't know why people think he will only go somewhere who is paying the same, there is more to his career(& life) than that.

Extending Navas doesn't mean they wouldn't get DDG, DDG is better and they can afford two.

So all options mentioned are still possible.

One of those teams may we'll take Donnarumma, the other two could still take DDG.

If wages were an issue, which they won't be, we'd be better off paying the difference for the remainder of his contract, there are only two years left on his contract.

Edit: current reports suggest Donnarumma may go Barcelona too.

Donnarumma leaving also opens the door for DDG to potentially go AC Milan too.

If I were a betting man I'd put money on DDG not being here next season.

You think PSG would consider buying DDG for decent money AND match his current wages - in order to have DDG and Navas fighting it out for the #1 spot?

Sounds unlikely to me.

Any other realistic takers?

I mean, DDG is a player on huge wages (immense wages for a GK) whose reputation isn't great at the moment.

So you ignored AC Milan, Inter, Juve?

And yes I do think PSG would, he won't be a silly fee and I also don't expect him to be on the same wages.

Again, why is it always assumed a player will only go if they are on the same wages?

Fair point, I guess.

But it's a default assumption for a reason. Most players in their (supposed) prime aren't willing to take a significant pay cut.

If Ole has already told DDG he isn't no 1 then I highly doubt he'll spend his career on our bench at his age, especially as it's been known for years that he wants to be closer to family.

In all likelihood the only reason DDG is on such a silly wage was because he would have left otherwise.

It will also be in United's interest to let him go and take him off the books, even if that requires lowering his price for example.
