The quality of Bruno, Rashford, Pogba, Cavani should really have been enough to win this but credit to Villarreal, they had only a minimal chance to win this game (sit tight, keep compact and nick a goal) and they did it.

No balls, no win! Not even surprised. Hope that'll shake all the club and stop lying to ourselves.

Said earlier I could see this being 1-1 and going to penalties.

Awful match for 120 minutes.

Questions to be asked of Ole over his game management and subs.

But also the players on the pitch they were careless with the ball, took too many touches, were too slow and it allowed them to sit in and get a good defensive shape.

Terrible all round tonight, no excuses.

Dig up stupid!
We allowed Villareal to set the tempo and we played right into their hands

To quote trainspotting 'they're just wankers, we on the other hand were colonised by wankers'

Not enough game smarts today, really disappointing

Seriously, 100% on Ole??

DDG was unable to save a single penalty out of 11. Comedy; like a script from Hollyweird.

Stuff like this destroys the career/prestige of an "elite" GK...

Apart from seeing some of the youngsters in the final league game it's been a thoroughly shit end to the season. Probably gonna ignore most footy related stuff for a week or two.

I'm afraid it won't be easy for de Gea to take. It's going to be interesting... in a wrong way. I think he looked as if he was somewhere else. He wasn't that focused on saving penalties and therefore there shouldn't be a surprise that he was to one who missed. And I'm writing this as his fan and someone who has always supported him. It was simply sad to watch those penalties.

It's always painful to lose on penalties, but we never showed we wanted to win that game after Cavani's goal. Normally you'd expect chasing the second one. We didn't even try to chase, we didn't make substitutions until 100th minute (how is it even possible?!).

Ole got it wrong, de Gea didn't do enough.

Painful, simply painful to lose a final. And lose it on penalties...

Tbf to Ole ; he wasn’t to know that 4/5 of his front 5 would go missing

Anyone know how many penalties De gea has saved in his 11 years with us ? I can only remember the one from RVP. Must be more but it’s a pretty appalling record I know that.

Should the Manchester United board be more ruthless with managers ?

I'm all for long term projects, but how much faith do you guys have that Ole is the man to take us back to the top ?

No idea why we lost interest during ET. They were there for the taking. Not too fussed about losing in shootout, but very disappointed in nit trying to win the game in first 90 (or 120) minutes. Rashford and Pogba were horrible. Long wait till next season.

Brought on another goalie??? Wow I get the the hate but feck me sub a goalie for a goalie?????

Yeah yeah, not being fully serious.
And don't go on like its never happened before. Willy came on for Hart a while back. Krul also was a specialist. It's not unheard of.

Regardless, at a certain point, it was clear that Ole had a mind for subs specific for pens. Changes should have happened and not the ones we saw tonight. So yeah, maybe not take off De Gea for Dean, but certain had a mare with the subs. And I feel that cost us dearly.

We were better than them in the first 90, up to the final third anyway. But we still can't break down well organised teams, which they certainly were.

Can't help feeling we played all our attacking cards too early with that selection, we had no one really to bring on that would really scare them. Even so, leaving the subs so late was criminal. We were absolutely shattered.

Fair enough Ole probably wanted to stick with De Gea as cup keeper but he was never going to be any use in the shootout.

Some of the pens from both teams were top quality, I was surprised by a few at the technique. But some were saveable, and maybe Henderson could have got there.

We will win nothing with Ole at this club. This game was an prime example how a manager gets outclassed. Emery deserves all the plaudits. Keeping DDG for the penalties was probably what lost him that game. Villarreal would have scored 100/100 with DDG looking in slow motion while the ball goes the other way.

He's got a better record with penalties. There's also a psychological impact it could have on the Villarreal players. I know if fancy my chances against De Gea.

This all on Ole. Rashford played poor but not subbed. We need a goal so take a goalscorer off to give your old mate Fred a go. Could go on and on 2 shots on target and one was a 30 yard hit and hope from Rashford. Pogba and Fernandes were off form as well. You either got to back Ole with a big warchest which probably wont happen, bring in another manager probably wont happen, 3rd option give Ole a nice rise and a new contract and play for a top 4 place again.

I think Matic experience would have helped in midfield. Should have started instead of Mctominay.
No McT played well. I had a strange feeling all day that we would lose today, an even stranger feeling that a loss would be the beginning of the end for Ole.

On a positive note, we reached a final and finished second in the league - an overall positive trajectory.

Villareal defended like their lives depended on it. Sometimes the underdog just has that bit of luck, while nothing seemed to fall our way.

Bad game management has cost us, it reminded me of watching us against Sevilla in the semi's last season. Extra time was an absolute train wreck, and Ole needs a bit of reflection.

Thinking back on the semi's last year, PSG and Leipzig in the CL this season.. when it comes to crunch games, it just hasn't happened for Ole.

Stop crying babies and fecking back the manager and players.
No one has a right to win anything
Not this shit again. Does backing the players mean we're not allowed to express displeasure at losing a final so weakly?

He has a point, to be honest.

At the end, he probably should have brought on Henderson. De Gea has a terrible penalty record and hasn't saved one since 2016. Henderson has saved six in that time, despite barely playing in 16/17. He only really started playing regularly in 17/18.

No one better blame De Gea for this shit show today.

As always, Glazers Out but once they get taken out (if more like), he should follow a minute later. Absolute incompetent manager. And let no one come on here and defend this crap decision-making game after game.

Agree with this.
Our first 11 was good enough to beat them, we fell into their trap.
Dominated the game but failed to make it pay.

They played for penalties from the second half.
We had Pogba, Bruno, Rashford, Greenwood and Cavani and they did sweet f all most of the game. Poor performances all round. Not fecking good enough.

We got what we deserved. Not making a sub until 100th minute, we were on the front foot most of the game but couldn't make it count and didn't attempt to change things with subs in 90 minutes. Leaving Rashford the whole game on the pitch was a travesty, he was beyond terrible.
And everybody knows David is shit at penalties, why not sub him of?

I love Ole to bits and he has made a good job at the club but this game show his in game management limitations to the fullest.

Look at our team. Look at there's. The money we spend, the players we have and this is what gets served up in a major final?

Blame DDG all you want, but I'd like to know why we can't play against a schoolboys formation of 4-4-2 with no pressing, and why our manager is incapable of changing a game from the bench. When that's what he did his entire career.

Was Greenwood injured? Thought he was playing ok and light years better than Rashford, who could and should have been hooked at half-time. Probably the most inept display I’ve ever seen from him and there have been a fair few this season. Bruno never turned up either.

Makes more sense than subbing your goalie for someone who isn’t a goalie
