Both 360/ps4 versions were for the missus/kids, the VR and switch versions for me (the latter obviously for on the go gaming).
Wow.

Skyrim is one of those things that I could never really understand. I got it on PC at launch and it was so laughably bad that it's hard to overstate. I'm sure 'mods fix it' but the combat (I made the mistake of going with a mage), the inventory system, the characters, the dialogue... The almost aggressively average Kingdoms of Amalur was a far better experience!

Yep, I totally get that. Which ties in my overall point about the game, and I have been more scathing of it over the years on here too. However I loved Morrowind and liked Oblivion, plus played the original 2 so I was deep enough into the lore and loved the world enough to still love enough of Skyrim to still occasionally play it to this day (heavily modded of course, and there are plenty that truly make it a different game btw).

So when I say it's laughable to keep using it as any kind of positive measure for Cyberpunk, it's not from a place of hating Skyrim but clearly it's also not from a place of nostalgia. It's bad enough comparing such a hugely promoted modern attempt at a masterpiece to a 10 year old game and even then it coming out behind, it's worse when that the game in question (Skyrim) was not exactly groundbreaking in any gameplay area itself and was frankly average at best in most. In fact, the Elder Scrolls fans largely still dislike just how much they dumbed the series down (although I tend to word that more as they changed genre from RPG to action adventure).

Comparing Cyberpunk to Fallout 4 is more applicable as they are both pretty trash and hugely disappointing games. It's nowhere near the level of Fallout 3 or New Vegas though, I wouldn't personally use those two games as a comparison if I'm trying to put 2077 into a good light

BTW @Siorac there's some excellent mods that make Mage real fun to play in Skyrim, even to the point of picking a genuinely viable type within magic (for example, a proper summoner). VR takes that aspect to a whole new level (firing lightning will never not be cool in it), though sadly it's only vanilla.

Maybe one day. These days I have such a backlog anyway that I'm very unlikely to give another chance to Skyrim. I mean, I still haven't played Disco Elysium! Madness, I tell you.

A little secret: Although I've started and played DE, I still haven't found the time to sit down and give it a proper going through myself. That's because what I have played so far is so intriguing that I want to give it a proper focused playthrough.

Honestly, I'm not sure we should just so brazenly admit this in polite company. It's simply indecent.

I enjoyed kingdoms of Amalur but it’s not even in the same league as Skyrim. It has it issues (mods most definitely do solve most of them) but even in vanilla they have created such a diverse and interesting world and there are endless build possibilities. Not exaggerating when I say I’ve probably played around 100 different characters in Skyrim and pretty much all of them can be build differently and uniquely. Can’t think of many other gaming experiences that get anywhere near that for me. Having bought it like 4 different times the only way left to experience is in VR which I really want to try.

VR skyrim, whilst only vanilla, is an absolutely brilliant experience. I'm really hoping they do a PS5 patch for it, if they haven't already of course.

Isn't one of the most well-known Skyrim memes that no matter what character you start out with, you end up being a stealth archer?

I'm glad you enjoyed Skyrim. For me, it was a huge but boring world because there were no interesting people in it. Incidentally, that's one of my big problems with ALL Bethesda games: they really can't write memorable characters. The gameplay loop itself, with interminable same-y dungeons, was nothing special either: as a mage, I rotated between a couple of spells, all the while being frustrated that the PC version was basically the worst kind of port, where they literally just made sure it ran on Windows but that's about it. And after 20 hours or so I had no patience for the UI, particularly the inventory management which was simply the worst thing ever. Fallout 1 in 1997 had a better system.

But again, at this point I don't think I'll ever have an overall positive experience with a Bethesda game. I forced myself through Fallout 4 because at least that game had competent gunplay and reasonably implemented stealth. It was still absolutely forgettable though.

That does sound incredible. Also I imagine Fus Ro Dah is great in VR!

Skyrim, Fallout 4, 3 and New Vegas are all amazing games and I still play them today!

As for Cyberpunk, I only recently got my hands on a PS5 DIGITAL so I can't even buy the game to see if I enjoy it or not.

I’m amazed you stuck with Fallout 4 over Skyrim. I thought the gameplay in that was even worse, especially considering it was a newer game. I do get you complaints, personally I think you have to go into Skyrim with a fair bit of imagination to really get the most out of it. Like the nerd I am I had backstories planned out in my head for each of my builds. I liked the dialogue options and the array of rare loot on offer which you could tailor to specific builds or backstories. The thing is I’m fully aware the story is garbage because in 1000 hours of playtime I’ve only killed Alduin twice but it’s the story not the destination in that game. Anyway I’ll shut up about my own personal love of Skyrim.

I really do think if you enjoy those games you’ll like this too. I’d just wait for it to be all patched up (if that ever happens) and play with the ps5 update in a year or twos time. There’s a really fun game here especially for those that enjoy the Bethesda formula.

Seems like the best idea.

Luckily, I have a backlog of games to keep me busy and I'm not afraid to go back to old titles Ive always enjoyed.

Fallout 4 is hot garbage IMO, and Skyrim is massively overrated. Bethesda are a bit of a meme studio these days anyway.

Would love to try Disco Elysium since I'm aching for a genuine RPG, and not some clunky action game with shallow progression trees masquerading as 'RPG mechanics'.

So am I, honestly. I talked so much crap about it over the years that I wanted to finish it at least once, to see if at least the story's good.

Spoiler: it's not.
I decided to reinstall it the other day to see if it’s as bad as I remembered. Anyway decided mid download to abort mission because just thinking about the game put me off again.

Skyrim is really either loved or hated. Wouldn’t say it’s overrated to be honest. For some (like me) it remains the best game of the last decade. For others they will never understand that view.

I think it depends on whether you've played previous Elder Scrolls games. I'm a bit of an old timer so Morrowind was the pinnacle of Elder Scrolls for me - I loved the open-ended nature of it, the vastly customisable skill trees and the genuine sandbox feel to it. Skyrim and Oblivion to a lesser extent felt like vastly watered-down experiences that focus too much on its clunky combat system to its detriment. The writing and quest design also seems to have gotten progressively worse over the course of their games.

It's no coincidence for me that the best modern Fallout game is New Vegas - i.e the one that wasn't developed by Bethesda.

Yup.

Vanilla Skyrim is basic as feck, but unlike 2077, at least had a solid base for people to work their magic on with mods. The version I run on PC would be unrecognisable to people who only played vanilla, both in terms of look and gameplay. Even then though, the melee is wooden as even when the game originally came out it was stone age stuff.

Yeh to be honest I never played the old Morrowind game but have heard similar opinions. I just can’t look past the graphics. To be honest I haven’t even played Oblivion because I always said I’d try and play it on PC with mods but still don’t have a PC to do that. I know if o loved Skyrim, I’d love Oblivion too and there’s many things they did better than Skyrim too.

I played it on the PS5 recently and while you still do get the odd crash (usually after about 2-3 hours of gaming) it is in a pretty decent state and vastly improved from the PS4 experience. I do think Sony should put it back on the store.

There's a good reason why you name Doom Eternal as an exception, and that's because Bethesda had nothing to do with that game's development, they only published it. It was developed by id Sofware.
Yeah, you're right. They just published it. My mistake, sorry.

This is true, but Doom and The Elder Scrolls/Fallout couldn't be further apart development wise. These games are absolutely massive and although releasing broken games is unacceptable, bugs are very difficult to avoid.
Most open world games have some glitches and bugs, the kind of glitches that can acceptable, you know, like from time to time you see someone floating in the air and stuff. If you're developing a huge games it's impossible to make it 100% completely free of glitches, I agree.

The problem is when your game becomes cluttered with bugs and glitches around every corner to the point that it starts hindering your entertainment of the product in your hand.

So I finally got an X series and just this week figured I’ll replay it. So far I have to say the experience now on the X with it has been brilliant. It looks incredible, runs so much better than when I played it on the S. Honestly the difference between the first playthrough makes it seem like an entirely different game.

All that is left for me to do is replay the alternative endings and buy all the cars - I’ll never buy all the cars as I’m about 1 million short, I have 600k! Done all scanner side missions too, mental to be that short after completing pretty much everything and hacking anything I could along the way.

It does look beautiful on series X, just feels lifeless in the streets

Your loss, I'm playing it on the PS5 and it's amazing
It's average at best.

If they follow through on their promises (looking more and more unlikely), the PS5 upgrade should make it a bit more like the game they promised.

While it definitely runs better on new consoles, it's still a buggy mess that needed another 2 or 3 years in development.

I can't remember any bugs that stand out tbh. It's playing great. People just like to keep beating the drum though. I'm not saying it's perfect but it's far from avarage.

That's the thing with opinions we're all entitled to them!

It's the definition of average.

If you compare it to other sprawling open world RPGs it's lacking in so many areas. The fact that Skyrim is more fleshed out than this speaks volumes considering this preceeded that by a decade.

Maybe they make it the game they promised eventually, but the longer they don't fix things like the basic, terrible AI all they're doing is adding more glitter to a turd.

It's great you're enjoying it but the person you replied to is doing the correct thing; waiting until they release a game closer to what they promised. Realistically it'll never be that game but playing it now is like playing the alpha version.

Edit: I see you deleted the part about the bugs. I mean the game is a meme based solely on the ridiculous amount of bugs it has. A lot of which cause various hard crashes.

Agreed, it's much better than average, I had two thorough runs, waiting for DLCs for my third, had only several bugs that were all minor visual floating stuff, the attention to detail in a lot of areas is brilliant.

People just like to be a part of the hate mob.
