I quite like all of Varane, Kounde and Torres (albeit having seen less of Kounde than the other two), so I'd be happy enough with any of them really.

Maguire is going to stay in his left CB position isn't he? So I'm not sure how Botman or Torres will fit in.
If we were to sign someone like Torres then I'm sure Maguire would shift to RCB. Coaches often like having natural footers on the correct sides anyway if possible, so playing a left footer at RCB and a right footer LCB would be silly.

Any chance we could get Laporte from City...would fit the left foot/play from the back mold that Ole seems to want to fill. Downside would be that the deal would help fund Pep's acquisition of Kane or Grealish.
They ain't sell him to us. They consider us a threat.

Bailly + Cash for Torres or Koundé seems like a good option, provided those 2 teams have interest in Bailly.

I know Ole's philosophy to date has been bringing in younger players but I look at the impact an aging Thiago Silva made at Chelsea. Not only on the pitch but off the pitch. We've also witnessed the same thing with Cavani and how much of a revalation he's been since joining.

Experience is pivotal and I wonder if Ole could opt for that over his preferred age bracket? Time will tell but its an area we certainly need to invest in.

What's up with Koulibaly? Why aren't we linked with him still?
Too old, injury prone, too expensive, too weak in the air, not good enough... those are the standard arguments I’ve seen.
Have only seen him in 2-3 games this season and have no idea how he’s performed. Anybody knows?

Yeah and that's exactly why we should go all in for Varane, if we do everything possible and he still chooses to go elsewhere then obviously we switch to Kounde/Torres but would prefer Jules out of the two despite his lack of height

Since Inter are skint, how about an attempt at Skriniar?
Why not de Vrij, he won the Defender of the Year award in Serie A last season and this season he was in the Serie A team of the year.

We could've had him for £6m in 2014, but many on here didn't want him, much to my surprise at the time. Not surprised at all that he's had a fabulous career.

Van Gaal also had a mare here.

Kounde looks like a good bet. But the moment we got linked to him, his value increased to £70m.
If we can get him for the same amount Pool got Konate, it would be a good buy

He’s regressing in my opinion

Interesting to see that Kounde dominates Varane when it comes to progressive carries & passes and more aggressive in the tackle, however Raphael clearly wins hands down when it comes to aerial domination due to his height and also seems very calm and composed.

Godfrey from Everton?
V good player. Would love to see him at United.

Godfrey, Diop, I’ll also chuck in Salisu as a wild card as I thought he was great in LL and I think has looked promising in the PL. these are my realistic signings and not just throwing out the usual Varane rubbish.

Remember him having a good 2014 World Cup with LVG and thinking both would join us. Smalling and de Vrij would have been interesting.

So Koulibally not an option anymore? Im from the opinion that he was never as good as Napoli's price tag. Now theyre stucked with him, good luck gettin 100M for a 30 year old CB.

He hasn't been one thanks to de Laurentiis and his stubbornness. Koulibaly also looks happy enough to play in Napoli, which makes things more difficult.

Nowadays, teams would look to get him on the cheap given that he's older and not as valued by the market. Obviously, de Laurentiis won't stand for that.

At the end of the day I think he'll look onto his career and wonder "what if" he's a player that has won nothing but small titles. He was wanted by almost all top teams for a while, eventhough as you say he never did anything to put preassure on Napoli to sell him so he may be happy with his role and career there.

Ramos on a free would make us on a threat on set pieces as he's actually good at scoring from them.

That and we need a leader and a proven winner at the back to inspire the backline.

He's also still very, very good on the ball, so he'll allow us to pass the ball out of the back and play at a quicker tempo.

Left of a back 3 option and left footed CB option

Decent already, only 21. Ball winner on the ground and can pass a bit, low numbers in the air so not likely to improve us a great deal with set pieces

Main draws would be left foot, 21 and most likely a lowish fee because he doesn't have hype

Decent. Better than most players his age or under in the premier league this season. Thats the only reason I mention him other than fitting the left footed CB criteria some say we have. If Leeds wanted more than like £20 million for him I'd steer clear and look for better value

Why doesn’t James Tarkowski (Burnley) get mentioned?

He’s been really good when I’ve seen him play. He’s in his prime. He’d be cheap as he has 12 months left on his contract and is refusing to sign a new one.

Has it all gone quite on the CB front? Like a few on this forum, a top CB and CDM is personally my priority for the team in an ideal world. No point getting Sancho if lindelof is one of our starting CBs....

Sancho's attracting a ton of attention in social media at the moment. All of the media outlets are currently on the Sancho train, and more seem to be getting in on it. Until that gets quiet, we won't get too many stories about other players unless there are major developments.

Has anyone watched much of Romero? I’ve literally seen nothing but just looked up one of those welcome to United videos and first half he was looking like the love child of Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo and I was thinking surely these aren’t the best clips to show.

By the end of it he looked better but much of it seemed like recovery tackles for mistakes he’d already made. Is he a Maldini in disguise and the video I chose was edited by an idiot or has he got a touch of the Rojo/Bailly/Jones about him?

Didn't watch him but got defender of the year in Italy so he can't be that bad.

Actually from the video Romero looks really good. Strong in the air and has the knack of getting the tackles right.

Let's just avoid players from Argentina and those under Riaolo. Those transfers never end well for us.
I agree. It seems Man United and Argentina are not meant to be together.
