TBH that was just a reaction to people constantly bringing it up when it was clearly obvious why the club did what it did. I don't intend to make excuses for the execs, it's just I get it and it was for the best thinking it out.

That's right; there's no way Chelsea would have offered an extension were they not going to get a fee from another club. According the article, however, the positivity is based on Giroud's camp cooperating with Milan to get the best deal for them (ideally a free transfer).

So, what DiMarzio has stated (and a gentleman known as Dani Longo, who has been the best Milan related source for the past year+) is that the Giroud extension is a Unilateral extension only - which bars him from signing for another EPL club this season. There is an agreement w his agents that he can leave for free for a club outside of the EPL.
Interesting. That explains why Milan feel good about possibly getting Giroud for free.
