New year, new music, new thread.

The first release of 2021 I've heard is by Molly Burch (who I haven't heard of before) featuring Wild Nothing (who I love). It's a funky enough track to add to one of my playlists.

All new music is rubbish. Or there isn't any. I'll only be listening to Bob Dildo this year.

Seriously though, I have no idea what is due out from bands I like this year. I need to start having a look, once the breaded cheese hangover ends.

Massive shame. Hugely influential figure on the current pop landscape. Charli XCX's superb recent albums alone are reason enough to praise her influence, imo. Plus there's the fact that high-profile trans artists are so rare, so presumably influential in that regard too.

Her debut solo album was an avant-pop classic. Not obvious mainstream appeal (despite being grammy nominated) but again, important in influence and sound. Very simply, a lot of less talented people will make a lot more money copying the type of hyper-kinetic, hyper-artificial noise she made.

Listening to the new Dry Cleaning album, my ability to engage with it is hampered by how increasingly jaded I am by the sheer number of Fall-influenced, sprechgesang-y post-punk bands that are knocking about.

One of the better of the slew of post-punk albums around atm. Ripping off early Talking Heads > ripping off The Fall.

Miraculously I'm actually listening to new music released this year for the first time in what feels like a decade

I've recently enjoy:

Origami Angel - Gami Gang... very fun emo/pop that has quite a bit going on in it.

Manchester Orchestra - The Million Masks of God... Never been hugely into Manchester Orchestra, but really enjoy this.

Hot Mulligan - I won't reach out to you EP... good little emo/pop-punk EP.

Teenage Wrist - Earth is a Black Hole... it sometimes ventures into middle of the road stuff, but overall its a decent rock record with some big solid riffs.

New Wolf Alice album out today. Gave it a listen this morning and it sounds pretty great.

Averaging 97 (!) on metacritic too right now. Potential AOTY?

Haven't enjoyed too much of stuff that I was excited about this year so far. However Tyler, The Creator seemed to start his album rollout yesterday with a billboard teasing something so I'll be very hyped for that. I like a lot his stuff, but his most recent album, Igor, was one of my favourites in years.

For sure, also a superb album but for some reason I could not stop replaying Igor. I still revisit it from time to time now. Whereas his other albums, I'm mainly revisiting individual tracks.

New Dave album is phenomenal. How's he only 23 and spitting like that. Unreal.

It's excellent.

I don't think I've heard anything as good as Location though. But that could always change after a few more listens.

The track with Stormzy is probably my favourite so far. His guest verse is the best on the album, imo.

Loved Stormzy mentioning Ronny coming back in his headline set at Reading last night leading to boos from the crowd

So Stormzy, Dave and Aitch are all big United fans. We basically have the three biggest hitters in UK Hip Hop/Grime
Which in turn will make United the coolest football team to follow in each of their respective circles.

I know it's a bit of cheat code in terms of brand recognition. But given our lack of success in recent years, it's nice to know we've got an alternative credibility stream.

In some ways, we've lost an entire generation of kids. But in others, we've still got a stranglehold on youth culture. Now it's over to Ronaldo to win the lost generation back...

They will all be chatting to Jadon hoping he can arrange for them to meet Ronny at some point haha

New Chvrches album is out and I've listened to it about 8 times already. I really like it. Would recommend.

Listened to the new Maiden twice.

It’s really bloody good.

That intro riff to Writing on the Wall is *chef’s kiss* Great solo too.

The guitar work on Death of the Celts is also really good. I can see that one being great live. Oh, the bass too!

The Parchment is also awesome. Again, the guitar work stands out, but it’s just a really good song overall.

Stratego, Days of Future Past and The Time Machine are good too. I’m not sure if I’d say this is the best of the more modern Maiden albums, but it is a very strong effort from the band, and likely to finish near the top of my eventual albums of the year list. Perhaps at the top.

Darkest Hour is the only song here that doesn’t do anything for me.

Hell on Earth is an incredible closer. When the Wild Wind Blows, Empire of the Clouds, and now Hell on Earth is one heck of a run of closing tracks.

I feel a Maiden marathon coming on…
